Here & Gone: 1975 John Deere 300

This is a series of clips I made surrounding the resurrection of my early serial number 1975 John Deere 300 that I got for free from a coworker back early in March. It came with the 42" mechanical tiller only. It's actually an ex-Alberta Public Works and Supply Services tractor that worked for many years maintaining government properties before it was sold privately. The side panel and carburetor were left exposed for quite some time, so the choke cable seized and the fuel bowl rusted. A little work on the carburetor and it came right to life. A further fluid and filter change for the hydrostatic drive brought the transmission back to life and I kept it around the yard for a bit before a friend of mine made a good offer and I let it go.

Nice job getting it running! Those Walbro carbs can cause a lot of headaches but it sounds like you got it running pretty good. Also good to hear that the tractor is in good hands and will be fixed up. I used to have two small badges on the side of my 210 that said "JOHN DEERE Makes It, KOHLER Shakes It". Thought it would look pretty cool for the garden tractor pulls.

I think I have a Walbro carburetor on mine, too. It backfires out the intake a bit, pops out the exhaust, too. Can you swap it with a Kohler carburetor? Putting a load on mine with the mower deck running, seems to help.

I had an 1979-80? 314 with H1 and single brake pedal. seems identical otherwise. I also have a 48 mower and a rear sleeve hitch (integral hitch). Nice little machines. the old cast iron Kohlers are bullet proof. love it. nice video. Glad you sold it to a friend and got him going.
