After a successful rebuild on the John Deere 317, I stumbled upon this John Deere 300 on Marketplace. I purchased this without knowing the condition of the tractor nor the history. Once it was at home, I decided I'd give it some love by going through everything! This garden tractor will be completely restored, just like the 317 I previously did.
In this video, I try my best to share the differences I have spotted between the two garden tractors and after that I dig right into the disassembly process.
The disassembly down to the bare frame took me about 12hours in total (without the engine, since that was already out of the machine). Once this tractor is complete and restored, I will share a cost/time-breakdown video with you. So STAY TUNED!
If this video was helpful, please give it a "thumbs up", comment if you have any questions and consider subscribing.

That's awesome! I wish you success with your 16HP engine repair/rebuild. I rebuilt this engine and it's covered in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZJWNsJWHmrTHkps.html The 317 isn't a big upgrade from a JD314, but the JD 400 sure is! Maybe you'd even like a 300 Series with a diesel engine, like the 332. Either way, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Regards Andreas

That's a nice original 300! Great explanation of the differences in engine mounting and steering as well. A lot of people don't realize how different the steering linkage is set up on the 314/317. That should make a good project for you...eager to see how it turns out!

I fully agree! It's always interesting to see what differences there are and what manufacturers had to change in order to accommodate the engine. I'm making a lot of progress. This time around I'm much faster, as I've already worked on the JD 317! Thanks, Stay Tuned :)

I totally understand! Many JD owners don't want to part with it, as it's perfect to power a rear mounted rototiller. Cheers

Hi John, that's a great question! Most 300 Series tractors handle a 46" mower deck and then for the Yanmar powered tractors some that can handle a 54" deck. The 46" mower decks have a serial number starting with: H048J ... Even though people may call them 48" inch decks, the cut is actually only 46"! I hope this helps you find a suitable deck for your JD300. Regards Andreas

What are these worth in good condition?

It really depends on your location and how many attachments you have for sale with the tractor. A stand alone unit in good condition will be around $1000 USD and every attachments on top of that will add a certain amount. I hope this helps. Regards Andreas

How much is one worth I want one for a project I found a 316 for 250 but the guy hasn’t messaged back but I found a 300 for 500 bucks maybe I’ll offer 300 but the tractor runs and drives it has a deck but it’s a little beat up what’s it worth?

Hi there, a JD 316 is a newer machine and it's worth 350 any day of the year...depending on the condition and what attachments you'll get with it. A JD 300 is pretty much the same as a 316, just that it's an older version. John Deere decided to rebrand the 300 to 316 in 1984. I got this JD 300 for the same asking price as a non-runner and it came with a deck and a tiller. Maybe a good deal, but you could get it for a better deal (possibly). I hope this helps you out. Regards Andreas

@@anthonytackett7346 I'm sorry to hear that it broke off. Is it possible to weld back together? If your lever did not want to move in either direction they may have been seized within the block. This block is right by the cut-out of the instrument pnale on the left hand side. Another thing that may be possible is that your spools within your hydraulic valve block are not working correctly (possible damage). This usually happens when your levers feel sticky or hard to move. Have a look at the block on the left first and if everything is good there, you might have to look at your hydraulic block.

@@WorkshopRebuild I can weld it back on but that will not free it up. I have a parts book with blow up. I see a set screw and bolt n nut held to a panel. I had heard in another video that you have to take radiator out.
