Your video convinced me to go find and buy my own John Deere 400 (1974). I pick it up tomorrow here in Germany. I test drove it today. It's a beast and bone-stock original with 1086 hours,. I'll post a video on my channel this coming weekend. Roger's HOT ROD Garage.

We've had one of these around here since 1979. We put in a new Kohler 21 HP about 2 years ago. Recently changed out the points and condenser and it still cuts with that same 60" deck. Keep an eye on your fluid in that deck gear box, would be a tip from me on that. Is certainly a workhorse. Not like the crap made today. Cheers! 🍻 -Al

Question I have seen one for sale near where I live and was wanting to know is the maintenance on the 400 more meticulous on this mower than a heavy duty Craftsman's in this year range this year or about the same.

Whooo! 🥵 I wish I could tell ya! I don’t have any experience with them. But my basic knowledge tells me that a John Deere might take some maintenance, but every component is probably far and away better constructed and more durable, and should last longer, than some of the lesser brand models (of the same vintage). Probably better ask someone more in the know! But having a timeless John Deere is not something you’ll ever regret, because they simply aren’t making these any more!

I had a Deere 400 with loader and correct tiller. I wish u best of luck finding attachments for the garden tractor. Does it have the original onan engine?

A loader would be so neat! I’ll keep an eye out for a rear PTO and other items. It does have the original engine. But I thought that in 1976 it was a Kohler K532 or something. Onan’s might have come later?? Not sure.

What would your rate your 400 out of 10 and how many hours are on it?
