Rob Zombie’s raunchy/over the top style of filmmaking is more suited for Texas Chainsaw Massacre, not Halloween. As for the next comparison, I’m interested in seeing Halloween H20 and Halloween (2018) or the original Halloween II and Halloween Kills where both take places moments after the previous entry all night with the gore being amp up

Another dope video! Rob zombie never ever stood a chance. Halloween 78 is a horror masterpiece.

Halloween 1978 - Michael appears to have had a generic middle class upbringing and suddenly snaps one night. Halloween 2007 - Michael comes from a troubled background and gradually descends into madness. The former is my preferred backstory for Michael. The suddenness of his transformation into evil and lack of explanation makes it scarier.

What makes the '78 so much better is how little we understand about Michael. We just can't figure out his motives and that makes him scarier. With Rob Zombie's version we understand what makes him so angry and we can use that info. as an audience to disarm Michael. The "less is more" approach that Spielberg used in showing the shark in Jaws works better here. Plus few people can frame a shot in horror like John Carpenter. The '78 version is just so much better to look at. Great video Kylie! 👏 🍻

I also have nostalgia for RZ Halloween. It was the first horror movie I saw in theatres. It came out in September for some reason and I had just turned 14. I made my dad take me to it for my bday. First 5 minutes into the film with that opening dialogue I could tell he regretted it lmao

The Original Halloween 78 is a classic horror film and We didn’t know already about Michael Myers motives for why he kills he’s more methodical appearance in the shadows and you’re encapsulated into the mysterious realm of his world. Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie strode the OG final girl the more recognizable icons in horror movie history. Halloween (78) is and always will be a classic. There’s a reason it’s still talked about & praised today, over 40 years after it came out. The remake is & still will be an afterthought. I think Rob Zombie did have commentaries in mind. He mentioned in his commentary for DC version the intention of the rape scene was to bring awareness that does happen in mental institutions. Also PETA praised Zombie for bringing awareness for torture of animals and likelihood to move on to humans.

I will say this, Rob zombie's style of humor did not work at all for the remake.

5:42 As far as Halloween 2 goes, Carpenter originally didn’t want to do it. Carpenter: “We’re making the same movie, only not as good.” And according to John, what got him through in making part 2 was Budweiser.

Malcolm McDowell is an actor who is very underrated. He's done some interesting things in his career: Halloween, Lexx, etc. He's probably best known for his performance as Alex DeLarge in "A Clockwork Orange" as his defining film performance, and on television for the "Fantasy Island" reboot; and a slew of cameo appearances. But he's never really gotten the credit he deserves. I think he's a fine actor who just doesn't get a lot of roles that are very visible. I can appreciate him trying to portray a very different Dr. Loomis, and not letting himself getting influenced by the original. The thing about Michael's height is kind of similar to Jason's height in "Freddy vs Jason". Ronny Yu insisted that Jason had to be taller than Freddy, and it's like, why? Jason is already stronger than any mortal human, and physically stronger than Freddy himself. Why does he have to be taller? It brings nothing to the role. I don't know why Rob Zombie felt he had to turn Michael into some hulking beast to be effective, when some of the most brutal serial killers in our own history have just been skinny, wiry guys and they just take you off-guard. Someone below said his style would have been much more effective for "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", and they're right. For Leatherface, you *want* a raging, hulking beast.

I honestly think Rob zombie made one of the best if not the best remake I'm film or horror history in my opinion, I love the more destructive and edgy tone, more frighting, watched when I was a kid, and watched it ever since

Exactly -- the difference between predictable and nonpredictable. The main problem in doing a Halloween remake is that the original was so much still in the public's movie-going consciousness that it held its ground. John Carpenter took a very ambiguous approach to the slasher movie, of making a 'boogeyman' out of a mute psychopath, and filmed it in a manner that, as Ebert pointed out, could be comparable to Hitchcock. Rob Zombie didn't take that route. His style mixes the slapdash 70's B-movie splatter-movie throwback approach he used in The Devil's Rejects with the conventions of Halloween, and very quickly it becomes a deterrent to whatever he's trying to do in the script. Once or twice it almost seems as if he might try and improve as a director in some scenes, but then he falls back on shaky hand-held camera-work and lots of gore. But that's only one gripe to have, and probably not even the central one. Probably the biggest flaw in Zombie's construction of the film is in making the ambiguous not only nil, but juxtaposing a new theorem to Myers' psychology. I think it's just an acquired taste in the mix of all the other sequels. A rather big misguided opportunity.

There's a few things I like more about RZ Halloween. The atmosphere is better cause it actually feels like fall compared to the original. I like the soundtrack more in zombies movie and if I were standing across from Nick as Michael and Tyler as Michael I know which one I'd be afraid of. I still know carpenters movie is better tho.

The only problem I have with Halloween is Michael Myers coming back so many times that even Jason came back from space to Camp Crystal Lake saying, "All right! Enough already, Michael! Even I know when it's time to quit!"

It’s crazy how movies get bad reviews when they first come out then as the years go by it gets good ones. Like my short film Baseball Massacre and now it’s getting a 10 year anniversary at our local indie theater and it’s more appreciated now.

4:18 Great video! And, yes! I still think Nick Castle is the best Myers. Agree on Castle’s grace of movement, especially the scene where Myers scraps Laurie’s arm and the following shot, Myers appears out of the darkness, and music and chase starts.

Everybody has an opinion, and I understand. However, people need to quit saying that Zombie's adaptation was a "Re-Make". It was not. It was Zombie's "Vision" of what he wanted to do with the story from the start. Zombie gets pooped on way too much. It wasn't as bad as people say it was. You can't compare the 2.

H 78 wins for sure. Not a fan of Zombie's H, it has a few decent moments but the dialogue is a joke. Brad Dourif should have been the lead.

I really don’t hate Rob Zombie’s remake. I like a few elements such as Malcom Mcdowell Loomis, Tyler Mane’s portrayal as a more brutal Michael, Laurie’s more likable interaction with Tommy and Lindsey, and Brad Douriff. Nothing ever comes close to the original but John Carpenter told Rob to make it his own so I can’t shit on it for being different. Although, I do prefer Rob’s Halloween 2 over the remake.

There's no meaningful comparison here. Halloween 1978 is a classic and outshines the remake in almost every way. I enjoy the Theatrical Cut of the remake for what it is, but Halloween was never meant to be a slasher franchise like Friday the 13th - that's why every attempt to expand on it has failed.

I think I’m about one of the only people that prefers Zombie’s Halloween movies. They have their flaws no doubt, but I loved how visceral they are. I liked how Myers was portrayed as a monster but definitely felt the pain..not a Demi god with a knife that couldn’t even be hurt. Is it better than 78? No..but watch Zombie’s THEN watch part 3 through h20…makes those damn near unwatchable.

I'm way more charitable to RZH than most, but I'll fully admit Rob Zombie was not the right choice to remake Halloween. But I have no idea who would have been the right choice, because Halloween is SO iconic and so signature Carpenter that remaking it is just a fool's errand. It's not like Friday the 13th where a remake could have actually improved on the originals. There are parts of RZH I like. Danny Trejos death scene was a real bummer in a good way. I like Michael trying to reach out to Laurie when he kidnaps her. I also like the ambiguity of if Michael was helping her aim the gun or if he was fighting her off before she blows his head off. Michael's costume at the time was the best since the original, especially the mask.

I wonder if you would appreciate Zombies Firefly trilogy. He hit his stride way more on those films. Don't go in the house is a great watch for your 70s video

Rob Zombie gives his villains character arcs

New subscriber here. I really enjoy your presentation and, in the case of this topic, so completely agree on pretty much all points.

I personally loved both versions. I feel like it's a little unfair to compare the two films though because they're two very different films. John Carpenter made a movie about babysitters being stalked and killed on Halloween night by a faceless force of evil incarnate called "The Shape". That sums up the entire story. Rob Zombie made a movie about a flesh and blood psychopath named Michael Myers that escapes a psych ward and returns to his hometown on Halloween night looking for his baby sister. That's two very different stories with very different characters... I believe in my heart that if RZ's Halloween was an original piece and not a remake of a beloved classic, people would view RZ's Halloween as a classic much like they view The Devil's Rejects.

Great video as always. Since I was not then a subscriber of your channel yet when you did most of your Halloween franchise review series last year, I might as well take this opportunity to give my thoughts on both of these films. With Halloween 1978 I really don't feel like there's a lot I have to say about that movie, because I would basically just be parroting what everyone else and their mom has said about that movie for the last 40+ years. It's a horror classic. Nick Castle's Michael Myers is one of the most iconic villains in film history. Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasence are also huge icons in the genre. The atmosphere and tension is great, the score is simple, yet so effective, iconic & memorable as film music....yep, what did I tell ya, I'm parroting lol. Since I think everyone reading this gets the point by now, I'm just gonna move on to RZ's Halloween. Rob Zombie's movie is a film I have a love/hate relationship with. I don't HATE this movie on the level some other fans do, per se. I don't even think it's the worst of this franchise tbh (Cough cough *Halloween 5* cough cough). I can watch this movie and get SOME enjoyment out of certain aspects of it. For example, the kills. This is actually quite an entertaining movie for me from a gore/carnage candy perspective. Tyler Mane's Michael is in competition with James Jude Courtney as the most brutal Michael Myers we've ever gotten on film. Even subjectively I just really like the more brutal portrayal of Michael that Rob Zombie goes for with this film. Now don't get me wrong, Nick Castle's portrayal of the Shape is perfect for the version of the character that John Carpenter and co. were going for in the original 1978 film. But if you were to put Nick Castle's Michael and Tyler Mane's Michael both in front of me and have them both chase after me, I can almost guarantee you I'd be 1000X more scared of Tyler Mane's Michael for the sheer imposing hulk of a man he is and the brutality of the kills. But for every one thing the film does right, it gets far more wrong. This film has a LOT of problems. Even though I appreciate the fact Rob Zombie tried to go in a different creative direction with this source material and not just do a carbon copy retread of the 78 film (Even though he kinda does that anyway with the third act basically just being a cliff notes version of the original John Carpenter film), the actual story direction he chooses to take Michael in this film is not nearly as effective as it was in the original John Carpenter film. By exploring the human side of Michael, his terrible home life and why he became this psychotic killing machine, it really misses the mark on what made the original Nick Castle Michael Myers such an effective and iconic villain. He's supposed to be motiveless evil who kills because....well, because he can. No rhyme or reason for it, that's just who he is in that original movie. While exploring Michael's backstory does humanize him quite a bit and on paper would work pretty well for any other character of this type, that was never who Michael was supposed to be and it turns Michael into any other psychotic killer with severe mental health issues, thus taking away a large part of what makes Michael Myers "Michael Myers". Scout Taylor Compton as Laurie Strode is annoying as f*** in this first RZ movie, for pretty much all the reasons you listed in your review, but also for the incessant annoying screaming she does in the third act and for the lack of any real character depth or progression. Now I'm of the rather unpopular opinion that I think RZ greatly improved on Laurie as a character in his second movie, but since we're not talking about that movie here, I can't use that as a defense for her character in this particular film. She's just a terrible character in this first movie and obviously doesn't hold a candle to the original Laurie Strode played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Malcolm McDowell was..."fine" as Doctor Loomis. The problem is he's just not given that much to work with here. He's not given much to do or say that hadn't already been done better by Donald Pleasence as the character. Rob Zombie also really drops the ball with the second act with Michael and Dr. Loomis at Smith's Grove. We never really got to know what Michael and Dr. Loomis's relationship was in that original JC movie at Smith's grove. The remake had an opportunity to explore that more in depth with the second act at Smith's Grove, and even though I'm not a fan of the direction of humanizing the character of Michael, this was one thing I was genuinely interested in seeing get explored in the remake. Yet they skirt past that quicker than I would have liked and only really give us two (Maybe three?) scenes with them together, and both times I really didn't get the sense that Loomis had seen "The Devil's Eyes" in Michael, or that he was genuinely becoming afraid of Michael or what he could be capable of if he were to ever get out. The acting and the dialogue I'm not even gonna waste my breath on that, because I'd just be parroting what you said in your video. The only three actors who I thought gave genuinely good performances in this film were Malcolm McDowell as I already described, franchise alumni Danielle Harris as Annie Brackett (Who I actually think is a better actress here than the actress who played Annie in the original, despite the "Rob Zombisms" displayed by the character), and Brad Dourif as Chu--oops, I mean, Sheriff Leigh Brackett (Whose performance across both of these RZ movies is so good, especially in the second film, that this material almost doesn't deserve it). Well I think I've gotten everything off my plate regarding RZ's Halloween. You could change the name of the remake and the names of the characters and no one would make the connection. I also think the remake would've been received much better as a Rob Zombie original. He was already known for making movies with outlandish characters and settings and Halloween '07 really isn't much of a departure from his other films in that regard.

Even though I understand why you don't like the Rob Zombie Halloween films, I personally like the first one and absolutely love the second one. The second one took a lot of risks and Rob Zombie had balls to do what he did. Most of those risks I absolutely love. I like how the typical grindhouse 70's porno dialoge is almost gone for the majority of the film. Brad Dourif (voice of Chucky from Child's Play) is awesome and Danielle Harris is spectacular as always. Scout Taylor Compton in overlooked and underrated as Laurie. Tyler Mane is the most brutal interpretation of Michael Myers EVER. The score by Tyler Bates is great and the cover of Love Hurts by Nan Vernon is haunting and a beautiful callback to the first Rob Zombie Halloween movie (Sheri Moon Zombie danced on a strip pole to this song). I really hope more people understand why I love the movie and don't think I'm a psychopath for loving it. Also. Rob Zombie's best movie to date is The Devils Rejects because it's trying to be fun AND horrifying. It just works for me.

23:21 "Carpenter, classy. Zombie, nasty." Yes, that alone is a great summary of the movies. I hate that Scout Tyler Compton bagged on JLC's Laurie. While a "boring bookworm" og Laurie feels like a real person that I can root for. Scout's Laurie feels like the actual boring one. I can't root for remake Laurie or her friends.

The original Halloween is obviously better and it's not even a debate.. that being said I appreciate the Rob Zombie remake, especially the first half.. I think Rob Zombie was in a lose/lose situation.. he could've completely done the remake as a frame by frame copy of the original and it would be considered unoriginal.. or he could take a chance and make it his own and be criticized by Halloween purists (which is what happened).. I actually like how he decided to take us into Michael's childhood and how he became "The Shape"... I can appreciate it and not let it ruin the mythology of Michael Myers that was built over the decades.. I can separate Zombie's take from the other films.. people say he ruined the franchise and Michael's mystique by digging into Michael's past as if the franchise wasn't already completely "ruined" by 2007 lol.. I really like Malcolm McDowell, Daeg Faerch and Sherri Moon's performances... now the second half when he basically remakes the 1978 version is where I lose interest, especially in the 3rd act with the shaky cam and dark lighting.. and I'm not even really a Rob Zombie fan, the only films of his that I've seen are Halloween, Halloween 2 and House of 1000 Corpses.. I think it's fun to compare horror remakes to the original although the original is usually superior in most of my experiences.. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one where you can really debate which one is better, it's surprisingly close IMO... I think Carrie 1976 and Carrie 2013 would make for a fun comparison discussion although 1976 is obviously the superior film.. it's interesting because I've seen a lot of the younger crowds say that the 2013 version is better because it's more updated and much more relatable to them while they find the original to be too outdated which I guess is understandable although I find 1976 Carrie to be more disturbing the older I get.... Pet Sematary 1989 and Pet Sematary 2019 would make for an interesting discussion as well..

The only Halloween movies that matter in my eyes are the classic '78 and underrated '81 sequel, which finished the story arc. I do also have a soft spot for the wildly different and original Season of the Witch. I absolutely despise the Rob Zombie movies that completely miss the whole point of The Shape/Michael Myers character along with bland filmmaking, awful screenwriting and no atmosphere whatsoever :-)

I’m sorry you had watch Rob Zombies Halloween again, we’re here if you need talk. Just please don’t watch his H2 again, there maybe no coming back from that.

I watched the Rob zombie Halloween with the commentary on years ago, (it was the director's cut) and during the scene where Micheal escapes zombie said that they had shot the scene but it made him feel uncomfortable and it wasn't working so they changed it to the scene that was in the theatrical cut. He didn't seem excited about the scene being in the director's cut saying something along the lines of they asked me to put together a director's cut and I had to add stuff and change stuff so that's why I put the scene back in.

I hated Zombieween for a while but have at least come to understand what it is trying to say. As you say, Michael is no longer a universal force of evil (the shape) but a particular person in a particular place and time in Zombieween. I wish Zombie wouldn't have discarded the maligned Cult of Thorn story line from previous sequels. If he has a skill, it's at making ensemble pieces about groups of evil weirdos.

I agree that Michael Myers is better mysterious than understood.

Both RZ Halloween movies are just grim to watch, his original is marginally better if you can get through the first act with the horrendous dialogue. Obviously no contest though - Halloween 78 is a million miles better!

Fright Night would be a good one to do.

I usually don't comment alot on videos but just wanted to say since finding your channel I've really enjoyed watching your videos and seeing what your thoughts and opinions might be even if they differ from mine cause everyone is entitled to like and dislike what they want and it seems alot of people have forgotten that

Quality comparison and happy you preferred the original! I could never bring myself to watch the directors cut of Zombie's, I heard about the extra parts and I don't need to experience that grossness. My overall issue with Zombie's (besides the many flaws) is and always will be you don't humanize Michael, he's scary because he has no motive, no reason, he's just a force of nature that personifies pure evil. Another great video, really happy I found your channel this spooky season!

Always loved the 1978 original but hated Zombies remake and never bothered to watch that one again

I Easily Agree With A Lot Of The Subjects & Details Of Comparisons You Made Between Both Films. Obviously A Lot Of Them Have To Deal With The Style, Quality, The Gore Factor, Tension, Suspense, Different Actors & Certain Elements Of The Stories.... But Just The Overall Quantity Of Grittiness Between The Original & Rob Zombie's Version Is Definitely What Sets It Apart From One Another. I Personally Prefer The Original Halloween Always & Forever Compared To Rob Zombie's. I Love Scout Taylor & Danielle Harris Very Much As Respectable Actresses But Admittedly Said For Me At Least, Not Even They Could Save The Messy Decencies Of What Rob Zombie's Halloween Had To Offer.

I like the remake more. Please don't hurt me...

I Greatly prefer the theatrical version of this film to the Unrated one. the additions they made in the unrated version were all largely unnecessary. the main issue is Micheals's escape scene in the unrated is just terrible whereas his hulking out and taking out all those guards was much more badass. And the scene where young Micheal kills the nurse was done in a better more subtle way than the nurse adding 'Couldn't be related to you' after seeing the picture of Micheal and baby Laurie together and then proceeding to turn her back on him.

This is a first. I knew people didn't like this remake, but I thought most people liked it more than the Nightmare on Elm Street remake. Again being honest, I liked it, though I do understand a lot of the complaints it gets. I loved the stuff focusing on Michael's childhood, especially because the actor for child Michael was PERFECTLY cast. He absolutely nails both sides of his mentality and often ends up scarier than he does as an adult. And Dr. Loomis was also very well done in that movie. I HATE him in the sequel, but what baffles me is that it feels very intentionally designed to be unlikable in that movie and I honestly couldn't tell you why. I love adult Michael as well, but after having recently seen some clips of Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills, the way the original moved is SO cool. I like how Rob Zombie Michael feels very unhinged and naturally dangerous, but OG Michael definitely seems like a force of nature that, unlike Rob Zombie Michael who feels dead inside, feels like he was never alive in the first place. I also base my preference of Michael's character off of Jason. Basically, Jason and Michael are two incredibly similar killers. Silent masked stalkers with blades who seemingly can't die. Which is why I feel it's important to take advantage of their differences wherever possible. And the broken child backstory works better for Jason Voorhees than it does Michael Meyers. I also watched a video who found that the theatrical cut has the better escape scene for Michael, but the director's cut has more engaging Dr. Loomis moments.

I definitely agree that people should not watch the Director's cut of Rob Zombie's first Halloween movie. The theatrical cut is way better. For his H2, on the other hand, the director's cut is better.

Halloween is one of the best debut horror movies in history and I do love the remake of Halloween it's a awesome remake.

I easily see how someone would hate this movie, but I actually like it. The dialogue is unbearable, especially for the first third, but I like it other than that. Tyler mane is possible my favorite Michael Myers (either him, nick castle, or James Jude Courtney). I also just love rob zombies style in general. House of 1000 corpses is my favorite of his, but I also really like TDR and his Halloween 2 (I know, controversial). What do you think of his non Halloween movies? Ones like 31, firefly trilogy, lords of Salem.
