    I was born in the 80's so the original wins no contest. The remake shouldn't even be in same conversation. You can't reinvent the wheel. Cast is amazing. I'm actually gonna be meeting Robert Englund and the entire freddy 3 cast in November, so stoked

    *Nightmare 1984* : Memorable after almost 40 years *Nightmare 2010* : Not memorable after 40 minutes That's basically the difference in all these modern remakes, they are so watered down and generic that they leave the viewer with nothing, no memories, no quotable lines, nothing.

    I love the original. I also like the remake. I actually like the overtness of CM. It gives the revenge aspect a little more grounding as to why he goes after the kids instead of the parents that killed him. The Freddy Wall scene is much better in the original. In the remake, I wish they actually followed through with "Freddy was innocent" angle they started going down. The situation of falsely accused teachers by preschool kids was an actual case in California. I think they just couldn't figure out how to end it if they went that direction. So, it became a plot thread just hung there.

    There was a joy that Robert Englund's Freddy got out of toying with his victims that really set the tone of his Freddy beautifully. He was playing with his food, and got an almost childlike delight out of it. The audience could share in his joy. Shifting the tone to make it all sexual in nature just made it too skeezy. You can't root for that.

    Personally there are 2 things I'd change about this movie 1) the title of the movie should've been in the opening titles not after the first kill, I always thought that was weird 2) Freddy should've been falsey accused, idk how the parents could've come to the conclusion that he was hurting kids but it would differentiate it from the original, like when they were looking at the pictures instead of "Those" photos it should've been them just having fun kinda like family pictures and maybe have him say something like "I loved you kids... Like you were my own and THIS IS THE THANKS I GET?!?!?!?" or something like that I'm not a writer lol

    Probably a bit lost on new -ish audiences but this film came out right after the recession and the housing bubble burst. I remember going into theaters to watch it and they had all those big "McMansion" style house glory shots in it, juxtaposed to hearing how everyone was losing their houses in the past couple of months. This is also juxtaposed to the original, which had shots in poor urban areas, including some that were supposedly gang-ridden in Italy. No one really talked about it back then, but I immediately took note that it was yet another thing presumably stroking audiences the wrong way. Also thanks for all the Heather/Nancy love! She's so wildly under appreciated!!

    As always a great review/comparison with an funny intro. What made the brilliant Mister Craven was not only style, but also a lot of substance. Thats kind of missing in the remake: it's a lot of style, not much more. But Jackie Haley is awesome in everything he does, he saves the movie. At the beginning of the video you showed an excerpt from an interview. Here one can see Wes Craven's claim and ambition to bring the real horrors of life to the screen. He really was an artist who put a lot of thought and heart into each of his projects.

    What I can find creepier in the original isn't that Freddy has an implied sexual nature to him, but that Nancy and her friends most likely had older siblings they forgot about. Nancy at least had to have one since her mom is dealing with everything the worst.

  • @SirNerdLeroy

    @SirNerdLeroy

    @@B1Kobe0824 Just because it was a deleted scene doesn't mean it's not true. That's why I said implied rather than saying they outright announced it. The movie is written and filmed with that in mind so when it's cut out, it's still felt.

  • @SirNerdLeroy

    @SirNerdLeroy

    Жыл бұрын

    @@B1Kobe0824 most scenes get cut for time and pacing because it's what the studio wants (which is why a movie like terrifier 2 is so long since it didn't have limitations). If you look at the movie as is, then I guess you can come to that conclusion, but I always assumed she had to have had an older sibling. I didn't even know there was a scene that actively said so for a while. It just made sense because why else would Nancy's mom have the glove? Why would she take it the hardest? Why would her dad be so void? They're responding to the trauma of losing a child and killing the man who did it and realizing it didn't solve anything. With a good story, there's another story within that can be found. Taking a scene like that out let's the audience piece it together through the context clues that do still exist. When you write a reveal like that, it seeps in other parts of the script. You could take out the twist of the 6th sense and people will still grasp that Bruce Willis was dead throughout the film.

  • @SirNerdLeroy

    @SirNerdLeroy

    Жыл бұрын

    @@mattdad8429 It's not irrelevant, it's just not shown. Nancy having an older sibling isn't confirmed nor denied. It is implied, though, since that was the original intent and it shows throughout the movie. Deleting the scene could have just been for pacing. The scene adds lore more than pushing the plot forward. It's not needed since it's something the audience can gather through context clues. Which is why I always thought she had an older sibling before knowing there was a deleted scene. I've dealt with a bunch of movies and shows saying there was a secret sibling all along or even taking a sibling away with no explanation. Saying Nancy most likely had one isn't far fetched. Especially from a movie where they actively pulled back elements and let them be implied rather than pointed out directly.

But I have mad love and respect for both of their versions. The remake has grown slightly on me over the years, I still look at it as a really waisted opportunity to break new ground rather than just put it on for entertainment, I can never quite finish the whole movie because certain things just bore me or annoy me too much, that being said I appreciate the attempt and I love some of the dream sequence’s as well as the lighting which you seem to highlight in you’re assessment! Maybe it's my bias from sneaking into the living room in 1985 at 6 and watching it on VHS for the first time, and it being my favorite horror movie of all time (honorable mention goes to I Saw The Devil) but the part one Krueger was terrifying. His herky jerky movements, and that rotted teethed smile and eyeball twitch when he cut off his finger to Tina. Englund absolutely figured that puzzle out brilliantly. I just laughed at the Haley version, it was just so preposterous to me.

The thing that bugs me the most about the remake wasn't so much the darker tone (if you're going to show the ugliness of people, then do that) but late in the movie they show him frolicing with the kids like some fun uncle! That was gross because they wanted to make him likeable as well as being a gross monster. They were too wrapped up in the origin story idea to see what they were doing imo. I hope it wasn't intentional! They needed to pick one idea over the other. Fun uncle or gross monster. Having both really bothers me to this day!

    What are your opinions on the alternate ending of the remake? Personally I would have preferred it to the one we got, as it felt more poignant to the theme of SA. Still I wish they went with the innocent Freddy idea they considered while writing the script. I can't wrap my head around how they wanted to turn the remake into a marketable franchise with the new backstory of Freddy Krueger.

    First, I love how you break them down into categories and analyze them with facts. Second, I'd take the original all day. While I love Jackie's voice for Freddy, I wasn't a fan of the directorial decisions with the story and Robert was able to make it fun because of Wes. The fact that Wes wasn't even asked about the remake also kind of rubs me the wrong way, but I agree with you on Tina and Glen getting an upgrade in the new one.

    I've only ever seen the remake once and in the theater. I didn't hate it but it just didn't click with me. Robert Englund IS Freddy. Jackie Earl Haley had a difficult task of bringing a despicable character who became a fan favorite back to their evil roots but fans want to cheer Freddy and you just can't do that in the remake without feeling disgusted. In that respect he did his job and maybe if Freddy hadn't become such an icon it might have worked better. Maybe I'd feel different if I could ever get myself to have a second viewing but I just can't get myself to do so.

    This is the most objective critique I ever saw/heard/read about the remake. So many fans are prompt to spit on it just because of the bad CGI. But though it's no point discussing the fact that he would never equals the original, I think it's far from being the worst of the franchise. When I saw it the first time in theater, it shook me. And this is a thing not so many horror movies could pretend having done.

Of course I love the original. I pretty much don't like the remake. But I do like Jackie Earl Haley as Freddy. He is the only reason to see this movie IMO. Thanks again haunted hippie, I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more content like this. Love your intro as Freddy. You looked adorable tip toeing up the stairs like the Grinch. I'm cool with Jackie's portrayal. I think it's really solid. I think the movie though, is bad. It's all corny, bad writing/acting (minus Jackie), bad CGI. Bad plot. The plot is a middle school version of the original. I think it could have been a nice great film, if the film itself was reworked, wrote, shot, and casted. I'm not against remakes of any sort. My favorite Jason is the 2009 remake. Also, I really wish that the twist was that Fred was actually innocent, and didn't touch those children. That wokld be a cool way to do something different with the remake, without really changing anything story wise.

    @@HauntedHippie yeah I understand. I wouldn’t recognize too many modern day movie stars right now if they came up and shook my hand. It’s sad though because David Warner was one of the greats. He recently passed away. David Warner was in many many great films (and many many awful films) but one particular favorite was 1979’s TIME AFTER TIME. He was elegant, cool and the consummate actor. You know how so many people have no imagination and say things like “I can’t imagine anybody else in such-and-such a part” David Warner would’ve been an inspired Freddy Krueger.

    Nancy is the OG!!! She is my absolute favorite even over Laurie. Her journey was so much harsher than anything Laurie had to endure. Like she couldn't sleep! Can you imagine having to deal with a dream killer, the death of your best friends, finding out who that killer is with no google, staying awake, dealing with her psycho mom, dealing with her controlling and distant father, all while setting up setting up booby traps around the house. And yet? She fucking did it without crying or expecting anything of a reward out of it other than being able to live. Like that's intense man. I would say only Ripley and Sidney Prescott had it just as bad if not even worse than her. The fact that Heather is suuuuuch a sweetheart 😘 and has so much pride in the character is the chef's 💋. Like if any scream queen had gumption. It was goddamn Nancy Motherf***g Thompson. 💪🤘💅🏋️🏋️🏋️ I legit got got all giddy when you started explaining how you started to reassess her character again. That's what I loved about Wes craven, his leading ladies always had a brain and kicked ass without ever suffering from Mary Sue syndrome.

    I definitely enjoy both the original and the remake for different reasons. I appreciate the remake trying different and new things. As you mentioned in your breakdown the exploration of micro-naps was really awesome and if Nightmare on Elm Street ever returns that's definitely something they should take from the remake. I also enjoyed Freddy's mannerisms in the remake, the way he'd just toy with his bladed glove is cool and it makes the glove feel like an extension of Freddy rather than an accessory. One other thing I would like to tackle is that you mentioned that remake Freddy is scarier, and while I do agree that compared to the original films Jackie's Freddy is scarier, however, I'd like to point out Robert Englund's portrayal as Freddy in both New Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason. Specifically Freddy vs. Jason. I feel like Robert's portrayal in Freddy vs. Jason was peak Freddy, imo, Robert took everything he learned as Freddy over the years and perfected it. I would love to have a new Nightmare on Elm Street film with Robert as Freddy but portrayed how he was in Freddy vs. Jason. If we can get that someday that it'll be my perfect Nightmare film. Overall, yeah original still takes it the win.

They are different films of the same name and each offer their own strengths. I dont play games or watch films for effects. Simply storyline! I feel Jackies Freddy is much scarier. The fury in his sadistic nature is truly frightening. I share a sense of humor with Roberts, take from that what you will. In any case, thank you for this!

He also had a lot of voice roles in cartoons such as Ra's al Ghul in Batman: TAS, Herbert Landon in the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, and Alpha in Men in Black: The Series. The original is better, the whole concept and cinematography was revolutionary for its time. Freddy isn’t just another almost zombie like slasher type character like Jason Vorhees or Michael Myers. He enjoys what he does. The ending really spoils the first one, and it’s the same in the reboot. I’m not sure why they didn’t fix it. The reboot did improve things with advancements in technology but it didn’t improve the characters, aside from the different angle they took with Freddy, the other characters are just vapid. There’s no-one to root for. Even though Freddy is likeable, you should still want Nancy, the final girl to win out and survive. With the reboot, it’s team Freddy all the way.
