James is such a sweetheart. I can’t believe he was only 27 when he made Saw. He’s still so young, Im excited to see how far he can go.

Probably a hot take, but Malignant is one of my favorite horror movies of recent years. Its possibly because of how much i love Giallo and paranormal horror films. It was such a creative blend.

Thanks to my mom, who is also into horror movies, I became a fan of James Wan because of the first "Saw". There is quite a story on how my mom became a fan of the "Saw" franchise because she was recommended by a seller when she first bought a DVD of "Saw", thus making it a blind purchase for her. And when she first watched it at home, she was absolutely blown away by it. "The Conjuring" 1 and 2, "Saw", "Malignant", and "Insidious" Chapters 1 and 2 truly belong to James Wan's horror hall of fame. For me, "Death Sentence" is quite possibly the best action movie that James Wan directed outside of the horror genre. Your videos are amazing to watch, especially for horror fans like myself. Many thanks to you!👏🏻💯

I read somewhere that one of James Wan's fantasy projects is a horror fueled Batman film and I absolutely love that idea if there is any superhero that's perfect for horror it's Batman he's really the only superhero besides Spider-Man and Superman that I actually care about and I've been dying to see a Batman horror film The Batman was close but it kinda fell away from the horror aspect towards the end it's a masterpiece but I want a Batman film that's strictly horror and I think James Wan is the perfect guy to make that happen so I hope it does happen in the future

I remember years ago watching his film, Death Sentence, and quite enjoying it. But then I heard there was a director's/unrated cut that was only available in the United States. Here in Australia, we just didn't have it. But I heard great things about it, so I obtained a copy, and I thought it really elevated the film. But I've tried to find this cut on HD over the years, it's like it doesn't exist. I would really like to see it again.

I hold a very specific and potentially blasphemous take for a horror fan because Aquaman and Furious 7 and 2 of my top 3 Wan films (with Malignant filling out that 3rd spot). I adore a lot of his other films as well, but I can't help but love the cheesy action blockbuster. That charm combined with Wan's always excellent direction pairs so well for me specifically. Nobody makes those kinds of blockbusters like Wan does, and I love how he more or less does them so he can immediately go back to do a weird horror movie. Absolute legend.

I like your hat! As usual, great work on the deep dive :D! My favorites films from Wan are Indisous 2 and Saw, and my least favorite is Aquaman, I found it really boring unfortunately, but I loved the underwater setting!

You're one of the best horror documentarians on youtube Kylie! In the early 2000's James Wan said that Saw was a thriller set in a horror world and I found that such a fascinating idea. I love how you brought up the giallo influence in Malignant. I mentioned that in my own Letterboxd review too. It also has some campy TV cop shows vibes where the guy doing paperwork has a mountain of paperwork right next to his head! There's so much humor running through the movie. I loved it! And nice hat Kylie. I have one just like it, but in a slightly different color.

Wow! Your research on this deep dive is the gold standard! I never knew about his post-saw pre-insidious movies like dead silence or death sentence! I’m definitely interested in checking out the latter cuz Kevin Bacon in a revenge thriller is up my alley! But Like you, I never got into the fast and furious movies. Just some actions movies are too dumb for me. I’ve only seen the 9th one cuz I was invited a friends birthday screening of the movie. And I can tell you, with certainty, that the cheesiness of F&F can all be blamed on Vin Diesel, Mr Groot himself hahaha he’s basically the puppet master of that franchise lol And speaking of puppets, I finally started checking out the saw franchise to prep for your deep dive on that series! I’ve made it to 5 but it’s gotten very soap opera-y for my liking. But I’ll end in saying that my favorite era of WAN’s career is the reinvention. I admit that I’m not so into paranormal/ghost/demon movies so malignant was his first movie that really impressed me by the end. I love that he knows what to give us when we say we want something new! He really is a genius and now I wanna go back and rewatch the insidious and conjuring movies cuz I haven’t seen them since they came out. Always learn something new from your deep dives. For one, as you were going through all his projects, it surprises me how many notable movies and shows he has been a part of whether through being a director, writer or producer. I honestly feel bad for what he has had to go through with Aquaman 2 and the toll that it has taken on him. As much as I would want to see him do another DC project, I wouldn't be surprised if he never does one again. Cause besides what he did with the Aquaman movie, I almost forgot that he was an executive producer for the short-lived Swamp Thing show, which I thought was really good. But definitely learned a lot about James in this video and just how much of class guy he is. Thanks so much for another informative deep dive Kylie

@@HauntedHippie I thought it was pretty good for what it was. It just sucks that it was only one season. I'm just happy that we're getting a movie on the character in the new DCU and that it will have a horror element to it. Also it will be the start for general audiences to get introduced to the more mystical/magical and supernatural side of DC. And I feel like James Wan would be one of many creatives that would be perfect to handle that side of the DCU especially with his experience in horror. Though that depends if he would ever want to do another DC project after Aquaman 2

So finished the deep dive on James Wan. Let me say this first. A lot of movies I own have some nice special features on them. I think your deep dives should be on some of the disks of these Directors that you do. They are so well done. I like that on some you dress up or do makeup. I didn’t quite get the hat you were wearing. 😉 Yes I have played the jail seen in Malignant in a loop several times. I went into that movie blind. I told you before, up to that point boy is this lady nuts, whoopee, then oh shit this is awesome. Loved it. Plus I checked. I’m one of the 10,000 that bought Death Sentence. My daughters are the same on Furious movies. But shit the fast cars. 😯 oh yeah. I’m now more hopeful for Aquaman 2. Hero movies need to get there act together. But I liked the Flash, so shoot me. With dead silence I first though it was the movie with Anthony Hopkins from the picture. I checked and no that was Magic. Still creepy. What can I really add more. I took notes like you dad. 🧐 Great job 🤩 Also I’ve been catching up on your older dives. Even watched the it deep dive again.

I venerate James & his vision I've enjoyed everything he's tied to. And I don't think a celebrity death has ever bothered me as much as Paul's did. I grew up watching the Fast franchise he was always such a laid-back cat on & off screen. 🎃 🤟🏾

Gee, I’m always checking up on you to see what pops up. Wow this is a long one. Got to go get my snacks and drink. So who is this James Wan guy? Oh, I’ve heard his name pop up a few times. Really he’s a director. Looks kinda young to me. Oh, kidding aside I know if it comes from Kylie I’m in for a treat. I may even learn something. Oh, I know I’m going to learn a lot. The man seems absolutely wonderful, and I'm so glad for his success - I recognize he's done so much for horror fans. But sadly his style of horror is not really for me. As a giallo fan and big fan of 80s horror, I also didn't particularly care for Malignant - I can see why someone would, I even saw it twice in cinemas (because I wanted to give it a second chance), but it didn't do much for me. I'm really glad to see this video though and learn more about him and his career, so thank you so much Kylie! Great stuff as always.

Spec your SCRIPT, bro ?!) that you’re like “ok lets go to LA and call Cary Elwes and Danny Glover and get this done”….like, whaaat? You’re going to come out of the gate with that?! Love how humble he is while still being confident. That’s a hard line to toe without seeming phony, delusional, arrogant, or a flagrant breaker of the Writing Rule Of Threes… He ended up directing gargantuan blockbusters with huge budgets, and I bet when he was approached for them he was like “of COURSE Ill direct Aquaman. Ive been directing Jason Momoa as AquaMan since I was 12 years old.” And to be the guy who made ALL the big horror franchises of the last 20 years! Like….All of them! And still so humble about it! He pretty much said he begrudgingly directed the Conjuring on a whim because he was bored, lol.. I’m glad you made his humility a big part of your video, since that’s the first thing that has always came to mind when I think of him. Almost to where he’d come off as delusional if I didn’t think he also had that confidence. Studios are like “HEY! WAN! Yo, heres money, do stuff,” he wanders off, then comes back and probably delivers the final cut all like “i, uh…*snicker*…hope…heh….hope you like it!!!” Like Led Zeppelin sending “Stairway to Heaven” to the production company. Fast forward and some exec calls him, almost angry…”of COURSE we liked it! You knew we’d like it! We’re going to make billions-plural-billions on this! Again! What…what even ARE you? Are you a wizard, James Wan??” He just says “magic isn’t real. I’m not a wizard. I’m a James Wan,” hangs up, and puts sunglasses on his sunglasses. So with all that said (my tangents meet up too!), I think I disagree with your implication that he doesn’t think about himself as the king of horror. I think he fully believes that, but he’s just a softspoken chill dude. And, like, how would you not think that if you’re James Wan? Of course he thinks he’s the king of horror - he’s not dumb. Right? I don’t know - who would he think that was if not him? I mean..I’m sure if you asked him, no way he’d *say* himself. I think he’d maybe say Flanagan? Cus, like, who else? Jason Blum? Does he even qualify? So idk, he’d never say but … i think he’d know in his mind. Just look at the numbers. Taking the success of just one of the franchises he created puts him at Film Titan level; if there were two, that puts him on the Mount Rushmore with….who, exactly?..but when you get to the level of consistency that you’re putting franchise-spawning bangers one after the other… some truths are self-evident, right? Such as “James Wan is a wizard and I will be taking no questions.” To that point, I’ve also admired how much control he has over his own career and creations. And not because he’s Noted Household Name James Wan - he did it from the start.When he makes a movie that isn’t meant to be a franchise, he does so (Malignant cinematic universe? I mean, I’d love it, but…Like, how ..?), and he leaves the ones that could be franchises able to be so. And he’s been 100% correct, by my count. That is, I think every time he made a movie he thought could be a franchise, it turned into one - a Juggernaut of one to boot. And all the ones that aren’t franchises have their “this is a one off”ness built in. That alone is pretty impressive, and it’s all from him being a savvy businessman. I think he even learned from what happened with what they did with Saw 2 and made the first sequel to Insidious himself to course-correct it into what it needed to be a franchise. I thought that was one of the most impressive things I’d seen in horror filmdom in recent memory. I mean, imagine the other Insidious movies if they just had the first one and Wan wasn’t involved from there? Since I’m a Flanagan fanboy, my point of comparison to how sort of effortlessly impressive that feat is as a filmmaker is Doctor Sleep: how is it a proper sequel to both the book and Kubrick’s (let’s be fair) excellent but completely different story?! It’s like if a movie was released that was a sequel to Jaws and Home Alone.“This was a trilogy the whole time - surprise, suckas!” And then you go see it and it’s …. AWESOME?! I was as gobsmacked walking out of Insidious 2 as I was walking out of Doctor Sleep and The Filthy Animal That Kept The Change: A Romance (the third movie in the trilogy with Jaws and Home Alone). Like “that shouldn’t have been possible. CHICANERY!” Also, to that point, your impression of “everybody but Mike Flanagan” @28:20ish is the scariest short film of 2023. Alsoalso, a deep dive on Ed and Lorraine Warren would be…uhm…..s…sad. They, like, como se dice………suck? You’d just be increasingly bummed out researching and filming, then give the cult a video that bums us all out too, til its just a bunch of people being sad together like some kind of low-rent, geographically-distributed Midsommar. I’m sure we’d all dig whatever you put into the world, but you’re usually so upbeat. Your videos make us happy because you seem happy. A bummed out Hippie is the wrong kind of Hippie. Sloppy Steaks at Trufonis and slicked back hair is supposed to live in the “used to” - people can change, but isn’t it better for all of us if that’s to the positive? Wouldn’t you agree? (How many I Think You Should Leave references is too many for one paragraph? Its the weirdest thing because it does not matter HOW many times I hear the name Lee Whanell and KNOW he helped write and create Saw...my brain will never remember that he was the second guy in the bathroom. Every time I see this bit of trivia my brain treats it like new knowledge. I don't know why its hard lol James Wan is going to go down in horror as one of this generations big three. For me, we had John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Clive Barker. I think this generation has Mike Flannagan, James Wan, and the third to be determined because I feel like Peele, Aster, West and Eggers are all vying for that third spot. All of the above though, I feel have taken horror to this beautiful and cinematic place that previous directors (as brilliant as they may be) just didn't have the ability to do. I would be hard pressed to imagine ever getting another film moment like the end of the original Saw. That whole theater LOST THEIR MINDS when he stood up. I've never immediately bought a ticket to see a movie again because I needed to see what I missed or how I missed it. It was brilliant. Great deep dive.
