You know I had no idea that in the OG they were deliberately making Chucky look more human as the movie went on. Such a cool idea and wish they carried that on in the sequels. Thanks for that little nugget of info!

straight up hands down the original will always be superior. i saw the 2019 version and i was like what the heck is this? also the issue i have with the 2019 is that they made the doll modern and operate on the smart phone.

Chucky using a voodoo doll to kill his former teacher isn't really him using a different form of magic. He didn't make the doll, and the movies never suggest he knows how to make one. He just happened to find a doll the guy had made for himself (voodoo dolls have often been made for healing purposes, so perhaps he was trying to treat some ailment) and took advantage of it.

As Much As I Love Both Remakes For Different Reasons, The OG Don Mancini Child's Play Is Hands Down My Easiest Win Of Choice, Simply Because Of How Chaotically Funny, Genuinely Frightening & Campy It Is & Was For It's Time & I Truly Believe Don Had An Astonishing Hit On His Hands When The Original Came Out For Horror. There Was No Other Horror Idea Like Child's Play At The Time Which Wins A Lot Of My Respect For ALL Of The Sequels & TV Series Afterwards Because No One Saw The Success Of This Original Idea Spawning A Franchise, Not Even Don Mancini Himself, But He Made It Possible Along With A Choir Of Other Fantastic Elements Brought To The Entire Don Mancini Franchise.

Original wins but I do like the remake. It's decent. Yeah sure bad CGI at times but I liked Andy and Mark Hamill was a lot of fun. The force is definitely strong here and he did it for 2pac, aww. Reminds me of Part 3 "Chucky is gonna be a bro". TCM 2 scene made me chuckle. Did it need a remake? Nope, but I'll take it over Don Mancini's sequels. They are just not my cup of tea. I prefer 1 to 3.

Interesting comparison on both of these films. There are aspects of your take on both films that I both agree and disagree with, but before we get into that I should give my thoughts on both films. The original Child's Play is one of my favorite horror films of all time, and the Child's Play franchise as a whole is in competition with Evil Dead, Alien & Saw as my favorite franchise in horror, and that's pretty evident by the fact I left what sometimes amounts to be mini-essay comments on pretty much all your videos on this franchise. The remake, while it doesn't quite reach the same level of quality as the original, is still nonetheless a film I very much enjoyed initially when I first viewed it in theaters in 2019. It's also a film though that I have a very complicated history with, as this has gone on to be one of the most horrifically overhated horror remakes I've seen in my entire life. There is a HUGE subset of people in the Child's Play fandom that absolutely hate the remake with a burning passion and think it's one of the worst pieces of shit to ever grace horror cinema, and I just don't understand why. At least, not entirely. A large part of the hatred for the remake I feel doesn't necessarily come from the actual objective quality of the film itself. There are many good positives with the remake you bring up that I completely agree with that people tend to unfortunately overlook when discussing the remake but rather that it stems from the behind the scenes drama between Universal & MGM & many fans loyalty to Don Mancini. Now, to some extent, I can kinda understand where they're coming from to a degree. Sans the TV show, I may not be a fan of what Don Mancini has done with the franchise since gaining complete creative control of the series, but none of that will ever change the fact that Don has bled, sweat, and shed tears working his ass off on this franchise, and his career dedication to Chucky is absolutely commendable. So to a degree it's understandable that both Don and his legion of fans he's amassed over the decades would be like "WTF?" when MGM suddenly comes out of the blue and announces that they would be doing their own version of Child's Play and make a quick buck on Don Mancini's baby while he and his crew were actively working on the TV show. Which Don was vehemently against and even went on record to claim he was worried of what would have happened to his franchise if the remake had taken off in popularity. Because of all that drama, negative bias against the remake is understandable, but even despite that a lot of people have taken that hate to a level that I think is just ridiculous & unwarranted. My response to all of that has been "All of that behind the scenes drama is completely superfluous to the objective filmmaking quality of the film itself. If they make a good movie then they make a good movie, and though definitely not perfect by any means, it's not the complete dumpster fire that a lot make it out to be. There ARE aspects of the film that are done really REALLY well, like the kills, cinematography, themes, and my god, that KICK ASS score by Bear McCreary. Ok, mini-rant on remake hate over. I went on a bit of a tangent there lmao. Something you mentioned that I also thought was quite interesting was how for the original film they try to play with this idea of "Is Chucky actually the one killing people, or is Andy doing it and pinning the blame for the murders on Chucky as a scapegoat?" I think a more effective way of executing that idea would have been to NOT begin the movie with Charles being killed and transferring himself into the doll, but rather simply with our introductory scenes of Andy and him getting the doll. By changing that, this would create a mystery around Andy and whether or not he was telling the truth about Chucky killing people. Then, make the scene of Charles being killed and transferring his soul into the doll a big mid-film reveal going into the film's second half to surprise the shit out of the audience with such a horrifying macabre plot twist. If I had the power to re-edit the film that's the only thing I would really change about the film's story structure to improve the pacing and and more effectively create that sense of mystery around Andy & Chucky. Now, to be fair, I did enjoy watching your comparison of these films and you definitely make a lot of good points about both films, but there are admittedly a few things you mentioned that are either small factual errors, faulty logic or things that I don't necessarily agree with. Let's get into them: "Then that sequel led to another, and then another, and then another, and then another, and then another, and then finally in 2019 they kinda veered off course, they TOOK THE RIGHTS, and said 'We're doing a remake'". I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say there by "took the rights". It's entirely possible I could be misinterpreting what you said in that final part of your quote there, but if what you said by "took the rights" is what I think you're suggesting and claiming that MGM briefly took the rights to the franchise from Universal, that's incorrect. MGM has had the distribution rights to the original Child's Play film since 1988, which is what gave them leeway to go ahead with the production of the remake without needing the consent of Universal and Don Mancini, while Universal has had the distribution rights to all the sequels that came out afterwards. Again, I could be misinterpreting what you said, but it is worth at least pointing out just in case. "Also, I forgot to mention, the acting difference between our Andy's, it's like, this scene of Alex Vincent just sobbing gets me every single time, and I feel like nothing that the actor in the remake really impressed me on the same level" While I do agree with you that Alex Vincent is very VERY convincing as a young child scared for his life, at the same time however I don't think it's fair to compare six year old Alex Vincent's performance to that of then 14-15 year old Gabriel Bateman in the remake. They're both playing two distinctly different versions of a character with two different age dynamics. Saying Alex Vincent is a better actor in Child's Play 1988 than Gabriel baseman in the remake is kinda equivalent to saying that Patrick Stewart is more convincing as an elderly man than Zac Efron. It is just a small gripe and maybe that's not the best example I could have used, but hopefully you get my point. "Sometimes they used Ed Gale, who was a little person to play Chucky. The scenes where they needed Chucky to have the most range of motion they would put Ed Gale into a Chucky costume and they blew up the sets by about a third. And I find that so fascinating because in the movie you don't even notice, it's like so seamless" This might just be a subjective thing with me, but I don't really agree. The difference between the animatronic Chucky and Ed Gale in the Chucky costume for me is VERY noticeable, especially in shots that transition between the two, which can sometimes break the immersion of certain scenes, and ironically enough it's actually the Ed Gale scenes that don't look as good or impressive to me and don't hold up as well as the animatronic effects (No disrespect meant to the guy btw), which is weird because in most cases you'd think it would be the other way around. Again, not a big issue, it definitely doesn’t ruin the film or anything, but it is something we don't quite see eye to eye on. Either way, small disagreements aside, this was still another great video from you as usual!

Thanks for taking the time on this one, great discussion! By “took the rights” I did just mean they used what they had at their disposal, it was more of a figment of speech hahah. I did come upon the info during my research that mgm only retained rights to the original movie (and thank god)

I would agree that the original is better than the remake, but the comparison is closer than people may think (which I believe you were hinting at during the end of your video, please correct me if I’m wrong about that). I gravitate towards Child's Play 2 as a good first movie for Chucky simply because not only was the first movie not included in the original Chucky DVD bundle, but it's so much easier to rewatch. The issue I have with the original Child's Play and even Friday the 13th Part 5 is that both movies feel like I'm supposed to think the main character is the villain. Issue with Chucky is that he's so iconic in the sequels that it overshadows the mystery in the original if there is meant to be one. It's impossible to have even the slightest doubt.

OG Child's Play for the win (even though Child's Play 2 is the best in the series), but I do like the 2019 remake. Chucky is my favorite horror movie villain and Andy is my favorite hero in the franchise. A few weeks ago, I went to Best Buy and bought Chucky Season One on Blu-ray. I can't wait to see what happens in Season 2 this fall. I sure as heck don't remember being scared of my own toys as a kid. Because the toys I had are mostly Hot Wheels vehicles and playsets, Toy Story figures, Power Rangers and Marvel figures. Those were cool. It's just that I lured myself away from dolls (girl dolls) after seeing Chucky on the fourth film. Thankfully, my fear finally wore out when I was 19 and now I'm fearless around not just Chucky, but dolls in general nowadays. Between the Karen Barclays, I like Catherine Hicks more, but Aubrey Plaza's Karen Barclay, though not too shabby, looks more like a sister to Andy than a mother. I also like the deaths in the Remake (particularly that two-timing butthole Shane) more than in the original.

I mean, the whole sequence when Chucky hacked Andy's hearing aid in the dark, so he'd hear anything except Chucky's voice inside his head? I personally believe having someone who worked on the original to be part of the remake is a way to create interest in the movie by giving them some sort a feeling of comfort. I would’ve been super stoked because when I was younger around Andy’s age from the original so six years old I didn’t have toys like that I didn’t get dolls like that So my mom started buying me toys like that when I was older (around 2019 remake version) it’s just like everything in the world everyone has a different perspective so if it gravitates towards different audiences that have probably lived a life closer to theirs it’s going to be more effective it’s still a good movie and I love the original too

The remake made me feel bad for the doll because it wasn't necessarily his fault. I don't want that lol I will say that the remake gave us the good tension for the kills and the kills were good. They were creative. Truth of the matter is you just aren't going to beat Brad Dourif. The only thing that comes close is Fiona Dourif playing Brad Dourif. Also, what is bad about the remake and the character interactions...I work in a HS. I see kids talk to their parents like this. This is relevant and its sad. Because of that, it didn't jar me as much because that's just my every day experience where I work. I prefer the mother/son relationship in the first. Stakes are higher, just like you said.

Childs Play is great. I don't think the remake comes close but I also don't think its the worst ever. I've seen the original at least once a year for the last decade and some change.

Don't really have an opinion on which is better. Thought both the original on release and the remake were just... whatever. Didn't really pick up in the consumerist stuff. I do find the way they mechanically animated Chucky interesting. And not just boomers, they were still teaching drip down economics in the 00's, when I went to business school. Our cohort were having none of it, we were like, this is bullsh*t, stop teaching this nonsense... lol. I don't know, maybe it was just supposed to highlight if you really want to generate profit, you have to think like a capitalist, maybe.

I honestly prefer the remake, but child’s play 2 is hands down the best of the series.

It's crazy how everyone is dogging Chucky (2019) when he wasn't fully developed yet. He was still learning through out the movie l. If he gotten more movies where his character is fully realized. I think Mark Hamill would've been better than brad douruf. My opinion.

Chucky is camp, but Brad Dourif is an Academy Award nominated actor for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and is typically the best actor in whatever he is doing (or at least a standout). He's been doing Chucky's iconic voice for nearly 40 years. Sorry, but he acts circles around Mark Hamill. Luke Skywalker is my favorite Star Wars character and Hamill does a mean Joker voice, but the caliber of acting is just different between the two. Hamill is just more popular.
