I feel the same! She was so raw and crass and confident in that album! It also has a more contemporary jazz/pop feel and less mainstream vibes to it, though Back to Black is still one of the most brilliant, original and incredibly well-balanced albums in the last two decades 🥰

Back to Black was a life-changing album for me, and it all started with Love Is A Losing Game". After a really bad breakup, on a whim, I flew from NYC - Greece. I was at a rooftop pool where they had played LIALG. Everything about the song struck me. The lyrics, the melody, the VOICE. I hadn't heard anything like it. At that time Amy was still pretty unknown in The States. As soon as I got home I bought B2B and man it made me feel some shit. I resonated with so much of her writing. Truly one of the greats.

She is one of those rare singers that really moves my soul and makes me emotional and tear up because I feel so blessed to have been around during her whole career and I also feel a tremendous loss from her passing. She will forever have a place in my heart. She's truly a legend

think you are the only person to see the connection in her lyrics to her vocal performance.. as a writer i think she is so so clever , her ability to weave lyrics around a melody and using dynamics to sell the point ... its not hard to feel her story ... makes you fall in love with her... which is what a good song is all about .... thanks for this ...

Her live performances are absolutely brilliant and haunting. No one performance is exactly the same. Her delivery, timing and cadence is genius level finding these pockets of off beat tempo. She has such awesome vocal range and power but her control and restraint of the power conveying the emotion of the song just blows my mind every time. Always gets an emotional reaction from me.

I vividly remember the first time my mom had showed me Amy Winehouse; I believe I was around 12 maybe, I don’t remember the exact date. She asked me if I had ever heard Amy Winehouse’s music to which I told her I hadn’t. The first song she showed me was “Rehab”. We listened and my mind was absolutely blown, it made me realize that music is so much more than just background noise or something to bop your head to. She showed me what people mean when they call music “art”. To this day her music has the exact same effect on me. It hasn’t changed and I don’t think it ever will. May she Rest In Peace, she deserves it.

Since you asked, I really think the Counting Crows first release, "August and everything after" is one of the "perfect" albums. A depressing, SUPER 90's album that I don't listen to much anymore. Has to be THAT rainy day... But that drummer on that first album, combined with the songwriting, singing, lyrics, instrumentation, etc. That's a REALLY well done album. Unpausing the video now... :)

Mate. I am so glad you've done this. Absolutely on my desert island playlist too. What a brilliant track. Near perfection to my ears. Thanks and much love from Melbourne, Aus.

Hi Michael, I think I feel the same way about her that you do. It is musical genius

Fantastic album! My favourite track on there is Me & Mr. Jones. The swing in the rhythm section is insane, not to mention the impeccable backing vocals and horns.

Thanks for sharing! Amy is still one of my favorite artists, her music is pure gold, melody mixed by emotions and soul... and after all this years, she stills moves me when I hear her. Thanks a lot from an Amy's fan! :)

You saw her in Pimplico? That had to be during your Charleston years. Blind Melon's first album is great from start to finish.

I continued to be surprised how mine and your musical journey is similar. Although I've never been the player that you clearly are (not yet anyway 😁). I have progressed from rock to metal, blues, jazz, bluegrass and finally came back to classic country and rock, gigging a couple times every month with some great guys. Although I've only tapped the surface, your course has improved my playing more than I could have imagined. I now see the fretboard as a blank canvas to express whatever emotions I have inside. After playing for 35+ years, this old dog is learning new tricks. Many, many thanks for what you do. Rock on!!
