Live is what distinguishes great from the good.

She makes me want to cry. I don't know how. I don't even personally relate to this song. She just evokes so much emotion.

There are so many live versions. I can't say which I prefer. She never sang the same way. Amazing

She's reliving the moments when this was consuming her at the time when it was fresh in her memory. There is nothing more moving when a true artist does this. You actually feel her pain to the highest degree that is humanly possible when it wasn't your own personal memory.

There's a live performance of her cover of Valerie where she's sitting the whole time, tweaking, and just belting out the song. It's so beautiful and special and sad.

This version runs circles around the studio version. Just the guitar and her voice, and the amazing expressiveness of that voice.

Same, love this better than the original. But with Amy anyway, live sound is usually better than recording, especially in the period when Blake is out of her live. So that would be Frank era, and the very very early Back To Black era when she hasnt’t gone back to Blake (lol) and went on substance binging.

Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, and Aretha Franklin. Artistry doesn’t get any better.

This life acoustic version is, I think, the best version!

I like this better than the original because its raw emotion compared to engineered emotion..... sends shivers down my spine.

Your face is how I feel whenever I listen to Amy.

I can't pick my favorite version. She always sang it differently and she gave everything she had every single time.

She is feeling every word...this is her original version, she is letting us into her mind. She is tormenting herself, as you suggested she is singing in her mid speaking range but with saying something so personal the words to this physically hurt her.

You really get that impression don't you? The lyrics are stunning but her performance makes it.

She was the absolute best. Everything was so natural seeming with her singing and musicality. It’s like the music already existed in a perfect form and she simply released it from her body. We’ll never see another like her. RIP 💙

This is the best live version I've heard. Thanks! I love most everything she's done in studio and live. When I hear the studio version of this song, it's still awesome, but I don't relish the string orchestra background effects there. This song is raw as hell and better done simple. RIP to this Goddess.

She never sang it twice the same ! Whitney Houston had the same ability (or gift). That is what makes them so special beyond the voice : the sense of interpretation, the spontaneity, the honesty, and the freedom.

I agree with you that it is a skill that you learn through experience. When you know a song so well you can sing it any which way every time and you will discover new things about it.

It seems so natural to her, just like breathing!

I love this version, but I have another reason. My daughter chose this song (with a slight lyric change) for her Higher School Certificate (year 12) vocal performance and I got to back her. In the slower part we actually went to a free time and I let her dictate the pace. The examiners commented on how they could see how the visual communication worked between us for that. It was a lot of fun.

I have been fortunate in life. There are oh so many examples for me to remember and ponder. Oh so many examples that I find it difficult to focus on any one. Amy is worth thinking about. What an incredibly gifted individual that is and will continue to be missed.

Definitely this version.

I discovered her music during covid when everything was shut down. Was blown away at her voice and passion. She projected a free spirit that was troubled. I know people get all into the 27 club thing but if there was ever a female Jim Morrison it was her in a lot of ways. Her physical attraction was there for sure, beautiful young lady but something about her you just wish you could have let her know she was someone very special. At such a young age she left this world a better place. While this song is so amazing I find myself watching the "F me pumps" video. She looks so happy and her joy and sense of humor are gushing out. I know British humor well even though I am an American. Her music will never die. RIP Amy.

I was thinking the exact same thing when you asked the question, which version do you prefer. This is most certainly more heart felt. I just totally love this Women. Thank you for your vid, Blesssings to you!
