WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I'm sorry you had to go through those things. Concerning the premature deaths of children, the Christian argument (excuse) I hear the most is, god was calling them home. I don't know if you're aware of this largely ignored idea from Noah's flood. The bible never says that any of the wives of Noah's sons were pregnant when boarding the ark and it's understood that every animal boarding the ark would need to be of breeding age. What this means is so much more than genocide, but 100% complete infanticide. If the story is true, god murdered every baby of every species on planet Earth. And how is this justified? Because every baby is inherently innocent, as they cannot even understand the concept of sin. Well, god called them all home. Well, my question is why allow them to be born in the first place? Why allow life to be created that god knew would die shortly after birth? After all, absolutely none of that was necessary, or is god somehow not powerful enough to kill only the guilty . . . without Noah, without an ark and without a flood? If god exists, he's not only a monster, but an incompetent monster. After all, god said "sorry" with a rainbow, but I thought god couldn't make mistakes? And he's omniscient, right? That means he knew it was a mistake before he did it, but did it anyway. What's up with that? But no. There's no biblical excuse good enough to explain away the untimely death of your niece. God's mysterious ways is just a cop out. Once again, I'm sorry for your loss.

@@AGodlessLife Thank you so much for your very kind words, I watched my brother and father die slowly over a period of about 6 months, was a very sad way for them to go, but my niece was a healthy vibrant young girl, she wasn't even supposed to be on the horse that day but her friend asked her to have a ride and she would lead the horse, she didn't even have a helmet on, it was at a camp drafting event, when my niece got on the horse something spooked it and it bolted, it ran between parked cars and made abrupt turn and my niece fell off and she hit a parked car and suffered massive head injuries. I agree with you totally about the Noah's ark story and I say the exact same thing, what a incompetent even monster of a God, how do people believe this nonsense then think a so called God is worthy of worship??? is the human race really that stupid?? I always say religion shuts down the commonsense part of the brain as people must have no commonsense to believe this rubbish. Thank you so much again for your very kind words, have a great day.

Even went into music ministry etc. I was good at it too, and helped fill a lot of brains (and my own) with a lot of feel good chemicals. But after many years and experiences my critical thinking overcame the gaps I filled with faith. But if her faith helps her with anxiety and depression, and she isn't some dominionist who wants to push her beliefs as public policy, I see no reason she should abandon it. Life is hard, I begrudge no one their personal sources of strength.

I had the pleasure of meeting a monk working for the Vatican as part of a team investigating “miracles”. At the time he did that job for 15 years and he investigated countless cases but for only 7 so called miracles they didn’t find a logical scientific explanation. Being a scientist he pointed out that even if they didn’t find a logical explanation that didn’t necessarily mean it was indeed a miracle but just something they couldn’t explain. Now that’s what I call integrity.

We don't need neuroscience to accept the evidence for mental conditions - most of those are diagnosed through behaviour and discussion. There is something going on in your brain, and this presents itself as certain behaviours, and in how you describe your thoughts. Mental conditions are commonly only defined as a set of behaviours and thoughts (rather than some physical brain state), so simply having those behaviours and thoughts is sufficient to say you have a mental condition. Also, this is what pretty much the entire field of psychology is based on. Neuroscience is trying to go a few steps beyond this, where we try to figure out how those thoughts and behaviours link back to physical brain states. But your thoughts and behaviours are still valid and real, with or without this. For a god claim, we have some things happening in the real world, and we can accept those as valid, but the issue is linking those back to some physical/supernatural existence of a god. And that's something we have no reasonable way to do.

That's some almighty claim.......
