WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    What zero critical thinking skills does to a person

    And yet many Christians become Atheists and people let them tell them that you cannot know God by Faith alone. And yet Billions of others become born again Christians by FAITH and these people are rejected as knowing God .. such as things are where backwards is forward and right is wrong and up is down and any relevant truth is a mixture of truth and lies. What is one to do? Wouldn’t we all like to know that as people pick sides and some believe while others don’t. Some demand actual proof of God outside of Faith and it becomes a back and forth argument and it’s a tie breaker as the Christian still is a born again believer while the Atheist thinks he won something. An Atheist will win something if he can convince a believer to become a non believer. So until then wins no argument because an Actual born again Christian baptized in the Holy Spirit will never become a non believer unless they ultimately never knew God but knew of God and never ultimately decided to put God first in everything. So find God by the Faith he gives you or sit around demanding another way to find proof of God. Or decide there is no God and Billions of people are lying to themselves and lying about the things of God as if a grand scheme of sorts to fool the masses.

    @@michaelbeavis2632 it’s not a circular argument JUST because you say so. God and his word are one John1v1. What this means is if a certain scripture or any scripture becomes true it points back to God being real and not a lie. So if I found believing in God by Faith works because Gods word says we can know God by Faith that he gives all of us Romans12v3, then it becomes true to me. That proves God is real to me and not an opinion or vain imagination because you SAY so. God is real to me and billions of others so either make me not believe in God or keep telling yourself it’s not possible to believe in God by Faith alone. And of course you will not be able to make me not believe in God because you don’t really care if I believe in God but you say it’s not enough to believe in God by Faith so you tell me what else you got. And then it’s just back and forth and you don’t believe and I will go on believing and that’s that.

Is there no further migration allowed when the straight people inevitably give birth to more queer people, and queer people give birth to straight people? @@christasimon9716 Are we speaking just on the island? Because technically yes, there may be more gays on the island after 100 years, the percentage of them being gay will be way less than the 100% that started there since "gay" isn't inherited. I'm too damn tired and was trying to do the math involved and just got too tired to care at a certain point since it's a silly argument anyway. Basically if all 100 are paired off, and they have 2 kids per pair, then that first generation will be 120 gays and 80 straights with a very generous 20% change of being gay. Then the second generation will be 160 gays and 140 straights, and the third generation is when it starts getting wonky since now the OG gays are 60 and I am just writing them out of breeding, so I had it at 200 gays and 300 straights. Then the 4th generation the OG gays are dead, the 2nd gen individuals are no longer breeding, and I gave up because at that point the next 2 or 3 generations you'll need to erase whoever from breeding at 60 while also erasing anyone living who is 80. But generally, the numbers will indeed get bigger overall, but the "gay" population will be a significantly smaller population than the majority. And that's also just pretending they kept breeding until that last generation at about 100 years when the reality would be closer to after the OGs died off, they'd probably just have the straights continue building the population since the gays really don't need to do so anymore.

    It's so frustrating... I am a lifelong atheist with a severe fear of death and have been searching for a god for more than half of it. I want one of these to be correct as it gives me at least a pacifier. But when I look for answers I find one of the following categories of believers: - Preachers who know how to get you emotionally, but only rational argument work on me(might be my tism, but who knows. - theists like this one, who have a poor understanding of logical arguments or science and heard one poor argument, got convinced and spout nonsense like the most confident person in the world. - Apologists, who try to use semantic games or well hidden logical fallacies to mask their assumptions in their argument. Presups fall under this umbrella as they are begging the question at it's core. If there is a god, who wants me to exist, then he'd know what would convince me, since after all this time that hasn't happened, then either: A. He doesn't want me to know he exists. (Yet) B. Doesn't exist C. Purposely made me like this to fail in the test of faith. After all this reading, learning, conversing, I have realized that all followers of all religions that still exists are exactly the same, use the same type of arguments and are all based on fallacies. Yet it is something that keeps everyone busy and it's always in my face as I still want it to be true, it keeps sparking me to look it up. But I am so tired by people like this called. Such arrogance and ignorance. Holy convinced that they are correct. It maddens me how stupid they can be, thinking they are the intellectual. How happy their life must be while mine is filled with depression for 2/3 of it. How easy it must be, to be that dumb.

    What exactly terrifies you so much about Death? I can tell you, when I left Christianity, I had no major struggle to leave concepts of Hell or Purgatory or Heaven behind. As I see it, the process of dying is the part to be shortened, if possible, to minimize pain. But the state of death where what makes you you no longer exists, is nothing to fear. It is the same as in the time before you existed. When you want to compare my understanding of the time after death to any religious concept, you could compare it to reaching Nirvana, a state of blissfull nonexistance.

  • @aukemebel4263

    @aukemebel4263

    2 ай бұрын

    @@Cornu341 It is exactly that nonexistence that I fear so much, the idea now that one day I will not exist fills me with nihilism any time I let my thoughts run amok. It is the one thing that I think theists have over me at least, even though it's founded on shaky rationality on their part. I am also weirded out thinking about the time before me becoming concious, but it happens also when I think back through my life and not being able to perfectly remember everything that happened. When I am dead and indeed there is no afterlife, I ofcourse will not realize any of that anymore, but it's the entire pathway towards it that makes ever so scared for it. And I have tried to convince myself of other ways of thinking, some of them keep me from losing the plot altogether, but this is ultimately what frustrates the ever living hell out of me when listening to theists. They are completely convinced of this heaven hell thing, yet are unable in the slightest to prove it. The confidence is what annoys me. This is the driving force why I keep watching debates and these call in shows, hoping one of them can actually prove it. but it's always the same tired unfounded arguments based on fallacious reasoning. Funny in a sense, that the pessimistic nihilist in me, is the driving motivation to investigate something.

  • @Cornu341

    @Cornu341

    2 ай бұрын

    @@aukemebel4263 I agree with you on the basic nihilism, but for me it is a source of optimistic motivation: Whatever I choose as my personal life goal, it does not matter in the long run how well I will succeed or fail for the rest of the world or cosmos; exceptions are possible, but not likely. So I am free to choose within reasonable boundaries. It could be, that I see this as some kind of freedom, because I needed to take over responsibility for my siblings at a young age, when my parents divorced. So every time I am not burdened with an externally enforced purpose or obligation, it feels good. Do not get bothered by the confidence of the believers. When I was one at a young age I was also confident in it, but this was due to a lack of knowledge and understanding. It was just enforced due to unfounded ensurances on the side of the indoctrinated adults, who never questioned the basics or, even worse, were partially educated to find unreasonable "reasons" to keep believing, sometimes just based on feelings.
