FULL INSTALL WALKTHROUGH OF PRINSU RACK ON 2019 SUBARU OUTBACK 3.6R TOURING

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a full installation walkthrough for the Prinsu Designs roofrack by CBI Offroad Fabrication on my 2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring. This is the first video I've ever made so bear with me a little! The whole install took me around 14 hours and I hope this video does a good job of including everything you need to know without taking up more time than needed.
Looking to install one on a 2020 Outback, definitely go check out this great video by Explorer Wagon here: • Video
THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE THE INSTALL: 1) use stainless steel hardware to seal the unused factory mounting holes. The bronze joint connector bolts I used in this video rusted like crazy so I do NOT recommend them. Go stainless. I went with a small hex head stainless steel machine screw with a nice stainless steel flat washer over a rubber washer with silicone, and a stainless steel wingnut on the inside for ease of installation. 2) forget the zipties. When you remove the grab handles, take the metal clip out with them, reattach those to the handles and set them aside for the reinstall. That way you just simply push the whole thing into place with no extra nonsense. 3) use a threaded insert tool to install the plusnuts, like this one here: [www.menards.com/main/tools/ha...]. This will be significantly more efficient when installing the plus nuts; Explorer Wagon covers how to use this tool in his video linked in the paragraph above. Have a question about anything? Shoot me a message or drop it in the comments below!
Shoutout to ChrisFix for helping me learn how to work on my own car. Check out his channel for a ton of helpful car maintenance and modifications for the DIYer (as well as some drifting and burnouts if that trips your trigger;)!

    Excellent walk through. I wouldn't have attempted this on my own without it. Finished mine yesterday with no major issues. A few additional thoughts for anyone attempting 1. 46:36 - I did pull these tabs out. It felt like a very delicate part of the car (mine is the one without the sunroof). I was able to get the middle of the liner out by sliding it toward the back of the car. There's no need to actually pull them out. 2. I have an odd issue with the A-pillar. Everything looks just like this video, except a single, small black plastic piece fell out of each side. (Anyone know that that might be?) 3. I highly recommend an auto panel trim removal kit. I bought one for $5 on amazon and it is the best $5 I've ever spent. Th-th-that's all folks. Good luck to anyone attempting this. Took me 6 hours total, but 2 of those hours were due to errors.

    Thanks for the "review"! I'm glad it was helpful and hopefully future folks will find your notes here helpful for them as well. (I'm not sure what fell out from your A-pillar. I just took mine off again to look and didn't see anything that was both black and looked like it'd just fall off easily.)

    Thanks for posting this walkthrough. Looks great! I am ordering my rack today. As for the CB question. I'd say you're better off with HAM radio. I've had a ham in all my offload vehicles. You get much longer reception...depending on unit you buy, and I've found more people running HAM vs CB. I'll be installing my HAM radio antenna at the same time as roof rack. Before you buy and install a light on the roof you might want to consider glare off the windshield and hood. I can speak from experience!!! There were countless times I was night driving in Death Valley and unable to see at due to glare from upper light bar. I stopped using it and only used my bumper mounted lights.Unless you plan to plasti dip your hood the help absorb glare, you might want to consider sticking with lights on the front bumper. Just my .2

    Thank you, I hope it was helpful to you! I actually built my own mounting bracket out of some Menards aluminum. They mount to the crossbar of the rack and have separate bolts that extend up through the bolt holes in the wheel when placed face down. I have enough sidewall on my tires to float the face of the wheel off the crossbar so it won't rub, and the rubber provides exceptional grip to further stabilize the wheel once it's bolted in place. (Also acts as a sound dampener so there's no vibrational noise from it, just wind noise, as you would expect.

    Nice job! Did you consider installing a CB or other radio antenna while your roof liner was down? Or roof lights for that matter? Running wiring would have been super easy at that point.

  • @mnoutback

    @mnoutback

    5 жыл бұрын

    Excellent questions! In short: yes. The majority of my off-pavement time so far has been spent in areas without cell coverage so the CB antenna is definitely on my list of things to add, as is a lightbar (and a full size spare for safe keeping). And yes it would have been a perfect time to install either of those when I had the roof liner down. However, the roofrack used my last bit of the mod budget for the time being, and I am still researching antennas and lightbars to plan out what will be the best fit for my usage. So the antenna and light bar are in the works but won't happen for a bit. If you have recommendations for either I'd love to hear your input. :)

    Question: What is the distance between the rear or the rack and the liftgate when up? I'm considering this for my 2019 Outback, but would like to put a lightbar on the rear. Concerned there is not enough room to keep it below the top plane of the rack.

  • @mnoutback

    @mnoutback

    Fantastic question! In all my time spent google searching options I wasn't able to find anything that worked directly with the low profile rails (surprisingly, not even FrontRunner was able to figure out a way to mount to those securely enough). That's why I jumped all over Prinsu's rack when I found it and it's worked so well for me thus far. If you find one that works let me know so I can pass it along to anyone else who might be looking for the same thing!

    Hey man, I have the same car, and want to do a Prinsu rack like this. A friend of mine that is a Subaru Tech told me that this rack makes the roof prone to leaking. Have you had any problems with leaks since you installed it?

    Hey there Bart! Sorry I'm just now seeing this. I have no issues with leaks after almost two years of having the rack with the using the install techniques shown in my video. I've heard from some Crosstrek folks that got excited and rushed the install only to end up with a leaky roof, so be patient, take your sweet time, and it should turn out nearly bomb proof. Cheers!

    Hi there! I am considering installing the Prinsu rack on my 2021 Subaru Outback, but I have some concerns if I down the road I decide to sell my car, if I am ever going to be able to reinstall the OEM crossbars. Do you have an insight into that?

  • @mnoutback

    @mnoutback

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question. You should be able to reinstall the factory rails down the road. You would likely need to just consider using something like larger washers to help reinforce around the preexisting holes that you drilled larger to install the plusnuts for the rack.

  • @lundbrad

  • @mnoutback

    @mnoutback

    4 жыл бұрын

    Both good questions! I now have my full size spare and some recovery boards up there. It took me about 14 hours start to finish, but that was primarily because: 1) I was trying to video the whole thing and hadn't actually used the video function on my camera before so that was a whole learning curve, 2) I'd never taken down a headliner before and didn't find any good videos on it on youtube so that was pretty much all self-taught as I went, and 3) I stripped one of my plusnuts and had to wait until Menards was open the next day to get some more hardware to fix that. So start to finish was 14 hours for me.

    Oh that's you! Hello! :) That's a very good question because I do know of a couple folks who did end up having issues with theirs leaking after the install. For mine I went liberal on my silicone use and haven't had any issue with it after having it up there for almost a full year now. I just took down the headliner to replace the hardware I had gotten to fill the unused holes because what I picked the first time around rusted like mad. When I had it down I looked everywhere and there wasn't even the smallest sign that anything had leaked. :) I'm now just trying to figure out if there's a way I can add a little popup to that part of my video so I can let people know I no longer recommend those brown connector bolt caps because they rust. I'm totally not proficient with youtube so if you know how to do that let me know. :) If you have any other questions too please ask! :)

    Great video, thanks for sharing! Seems like you’re literally the only KZreadr that’s had the gall to deal with taking down the Outback headliner and actually install this thing! A few questions: 1.) to confirm, you said prior to installing to open the sun roof all the way? Wanting to make sure it being open won’t interfere with the installation, and 2.) in real time, how long do you think it took you to take down and put back up the headliner?

  • @mnoutback

    @mnoutback

    4 жыл бұрын

    The service guys at the dealership were impressed I did it myself haha. It wasn't all that bad once you get into it. Excellent questions! 1) I opened the sunroof all the way so I'd have every possible access point available for when I was getting it put up (I did it before I disconnected the battery just so I wouldn't have to reconnect it with my dome lights and EyeSight stuff unplugged because I didn't want any of that to get screwed up). 2) It ended up taking me roughly 14 hours start to finish, but that included the time I took to stop and do the video bits throughout, and the extra time to re-tap the one plus-nut I stripped out when I tightened it down too snug. So if you've got the essence of the steps down (for what trim needs removed to get the headliner free and where the screws/snaps are, then it probably wouldn't take more than 8 hours I would guess. Putting the headliner back up and replacing all the trim took a little over an hour for me). Just definitely take your time, and use more silicone than you think you'll need and then a little extra because I know some of the crosstrek guys had issues with theirs leaking and had to go back in and redo their silicone work after the fact and that'd be no fun. If you come up with other questions that the video doesn't answer, or doesn't answer well enough just let me know either here or on Instagram. :)
