ABOUT ME I grew up in a cabinet shop and was a born to be woodworker. In the past few years when work slowed in the custom cabinet industry I converted a few friends Vans and SUV's so they had more storage for adventuring, work, or just the weekend beach getaway. Before I knew it I had my own business making people's ideas come to life. I design and build all kinds of custom wood work and vehicles here at my shop in Huntington Beach, California! Please email me solidwoodworx@gmail.com for more information.

I’ve been thinking on this for a couple of years. After reading the other comment here regarding weight, my decision to utilize carbon fiber is solidified. It will not require me to upgrade components on the vehicle. The cost will be a wash in comparison.

It's nice; however, the added weight. Is it within the vehicle's registered cargo weight!? Is the suspension upgraded!? Is a transmission cooler (if automatic) required on this model!? Upgraded brakes for stopping!? Tire ratings!? Etc. Will this vehicle tow a trailer or even have a 2 inch reciever basket!? The vehicle may do fine on flat roads. But add hills, road conditions like snow or mud, even the slightest off road use... and problems may occur. Just say as an extreme overlander, these are things many forget to consider.

There are many things to consider before building out any rig. Weight rating of a vehicle, suspension, transmission, tires, brakes, where will it be driven, etc. This is based on longevity of the vehicle, safety for self and others, legality and insurance, etc. Just saying.

Love the build! I'm on my 4th version of outfitting my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport. My third build was done by my son in law who is a finishing carpenter .. so we built all the cabinetry like you did. And where is it now? On the garage floor. I built a place where there was almost no room left for me! LOL Now I have my bed and that is a raised deck to level me out but has storage under it. Now all my cooking gear and food go into a 'larder' that I can remove and it becomes my seat outside and cooking area too. All my clothing now goes into stuff sacks that can be compressed .. the sacks are also waterproof. Now for sleeping or just relaxing I have way more room .. when I pack up, the big Plano plastic box has wheels on one end and I lift it in and strap in down .. all hard items in my rig are secured. Hope you don't take offense that I may be 'dissing' you work .. it is gorgeous .. just saying what I ended up doing.

Really quality work my friend. Add some access to the cabinet space from the left back/passenger door and you can grab items from outside the vehicle when you need them in a hurry after getting out of the drivers seat. That and some coat hooks for your puffy/misc. clothes on that 45 degree section above the water tank. That’s how I rigged “the garage” on my minivan buildout and it is a dream. Rain coat/puffy are right there after you hop out of the drivers seat depending on weather. Not to mention my rack and haul bags. 👍 Also, using a Kreg jig on 1/2” ply worked well throughout on my rig, you’d be surprised how sturdy that stuff is on edge or even over a 2’ span when laid flat. Again awesome attention to detail and quality work brother! 👍 Thanks for the tour.

Great build! It just needs a Carbon Monoxide Detector, Smoke Detector, and a Fire Extinguisher! For those saying the wood has no finish and will stain, it may have a clear matte finish on it.

There is a lot of engineering when doing a proper overland or off road build, even when DIY. How will the build react to a front and rear collision, as well as a roll over!? Weight distribution!? Weight restrictions of a vehicle, which includes the build, people, gear and supplies. Suspension and brake upgrades. Cooler for automatic transmissions. Will a 2 inch reciever be used for towing or carrying. Terrain and weather conditions. Etc. One mod causes a chain reaction of other mods, as vehicle manufacturer engineers design a vehicle to perform within specific specifications. Without proper considerations, not only is there safety issues, but also impacts the longevity of the vehicle. I'm seeing more and more people doing builds without consideration of any of the said examples. Eventually this will impact proper builds for the overland and off road communities, which I'm a part of. Like when building anything, the proper tools are used and safety is a must; it begins with choosing the proper vehicle for an application, not what feels good or looks nice.
