Hey everybody. I've had quite a few people ask me where to get the rack. If you are interested in this rack, you can buy it here: bit.ly/38sotFR . As far as install, if you are located in Arizona or have the ability to come to Arizona, Matt and I partnered to provide installs and vehicle mods. Just contact me on the 4XPEDITION website at www.4xpedition.com/about-4xpedition/contact-us/ for a quote.

The Crosstrek is an an awesome vehicle but the Outback is much more utilitarian. I can shove a couch in the back it is so big and I use it to haul all sorts of stuff from 2x4s to what ever. Plus it is long enough to sleep in. It is a very capable all around vehicle. Commuter, etc.. Good decision!

Followed the video to drop the headliner in my 2020 Forester. Had all panels and the ceiling dropped in under 2 hours. Very simple, just nerve wracking at first. Once you get comfortable working with the panels, clips and recommended tools (these make life so much easier), you'll cruise right along. If you have an eyesight, pop off the switch cover panel and remove the two 8mm bolts before simply unclipping. I almost returned my Prinsu out of technical uncertainty, but after a deep breath, watching this video a couple times and following the dissembly sequence outlined in the installation guide, I'm glad I followed through. Mounted a Roofnest Falcon up top for a sleek, unibody feel that can only be accomplished with the Prinsu rack. Thanks for taking the time to author this instructional Scott.

Great step-by-step Prinsu roof rack installation. I don't own a Subie but watched for educational purposes. The OEM roof rails would never be reinstalled thus the OEM rails would have been cut/drilled for removal instead of the tedious task of lowering the interior liner and risk breaking various parts, airbags or the expensive eye sight. No way would I have been that gentle on the OEM rails. But this was educational!

I agree with your recommendations and suggestions. I installed a Prinsu on my Outback and had the same problems y’all ran into. Only thing I would have suggested, although a bit late now, is to coat the crossnuts with silicone before installing them for extra leak protection. As well as a bit on the neck section of the bolts to seal the bolt and spacer (not just the bace of the spacer) from water getting in.

Fantastic install video. I have a 2020 Subaru Outback and looking at the Ikamper Mini. Would you do the Prinsu rack again? I think I saw you had the RTT mounted on another rack before the Prinsu setup as well. Are there clear advantages of the Prinsu and what would those be?

  • @4XPEDITION

    @4XPEDITION

    2 жыл бұрын

I definitely believe there are advantages to the Prinsu. It is a total bear to install though. If you have the confidence to do it, I would say do it. If not, either hire someone or use a Yakima rack with Landing Pads to join it with the Subaru factory rails. Much easier but doesn't look, or perform as well as the Prinsu. Would I do it again? I would if I wanted my RTT to sit as stealth as it does with the Prinsu. Plus, switching to the mini was a major difference. Visit my website and click the link in the overland equipment for the Prinsu and for the iKamper if you decide to buy. It helps support the channel if you use those links. 4xpedition.com/equipment/off-road-vehicles/subaru-outback-overland-road-warrior/

Hey Scott! So I'm leaning between the Crosstrek and the Outback, and although I want the Outback for the space, the stock crossbars are definitely a concern. • @4XPEDITION

Both are great vehicles and have their advantages. Much better lift kits for Crosstrek available similar to the Forester. The Outback though has tons of space inside to sleep two 6-foot tall people. The main thing to consider is dynamic load weight, not static. Be sure to look into that if you haven't. I recommend you watch this video on how I mounted my Skycamp kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYGll7NmerzIf8o.html ( that was before I switched to this Prinsu rack - kzread.info/dash/bejne/dn2LscxrqdPcmdo.html ).

I'm curious, how much additional usable/mountable width do you estimate this rack added versus the usable/mountable width of the factory crossbars? I'm looking at putting on a large Thule cargo box, I know with the factory cross bars that would take up all available space. I hoping that with a proper roof rack I could also free up additional surface area to also throw the Gazelle T8 up there for transport.

Hey Scott. I have a 2020 Subaru Outback Touring XT that I am going to add a Prinsu rack and an iKamper mini. I live in the Boise area so I'm a bit far from you to help with the install of the Prinsu. I will probably have to do myself with the help of your video. I am torn on whether to get the Rocky Black or Black on the iKamper. Which one did you get? Is $250 more for the Rocky Black worth it? Thanks.

I got the black. The Rocky Black is more textured I think. You might like that. Glad the video helps! Did the video help you decide to do the rack and tent?

By the way, my recommendation: the night before you do the conversion get all the tools and get it all set up and ready to do. Get up early in the morning so you have the whole day to just take your time. That's what will make it less daunting-- having all day and plenty of sunlight.

4XPEDITION Thanks for your reply. It did close the deal for me. I had a Prinsu rack installed on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro and love it. Been looking around for a pop up tent for my Tacoma and came across your channel. My wife just got a 2020 outback touring XT a couple months ago. You gave me an idea to have both my Tacoma and my wife’s outback set up for overlanding. That way we can use either one depending on where we go. Been going back and forth btwn the bigger skycamper and the mini. After watching your channel, I’ve decided to go with the mini that way it’ll be easier to transfer to our cars. Also, we will save some space for other things. We are converting from RPod trailer camping to overlanding. Thanks for your channel.

@@maltoki89 Hey there. This is exactly what I'm doing. I have the Outback all rigged up for soft-road adventure. I am looking to add a truck of some kind or a 4X4 sprinter. I kept my iKamper Skycamp 4 person tent and am going to put that on either the bed rack of a truck, possibly a Dodge Ram, or on the roof of a 4x4 sprinter for additional sleepers and maybe even on a trailer to pull behind the Subi for when I bring Amy's (my girlfriend) kids along. There really are good reasons to have both a Subi and truck rigged up for Overlanding. Plus, if you bring friends or family along there is another comfortable sleeping space. On top of that, the Subi is actually long enough inside to sleep two 6 foot tall people. Thus, you will have plenty of space to bring people along.

So you took the ceiling liner out just to get to those nuts at the bottom... if only Subaru had put in riveted nuts instead of regular nuts, you would have save few hours easily. Something for Subaru to think about I guess.

My Prinsu roof rack install only required installation of the push nuts or rivet nuts. This was a very good by-the-books Prinsu roof rack installation on a Subie but it took way too long. If I was installing the Prinsu on my Subie I would have drilled/cut or destroyed the OEM roof rails instead of tearing down the interior liner. The OEM roof rails would never be reinstalled and discarded.

How exactly would you do it? Cut up the oem rack? How are you gonna get the nuts on the bottom side? Cut the bolts and just let the nuts roll around in your headliner? Most people spend more time on their phone in 1 day than it would take to install this properly. Put down the phone and do it right.
