Question: What is the distance between the rear or the rack and the liftgate when up? I'm considering this for my 2019 Outback, but would like to put a lightbar on the rear. Concerned there is not enough room to keep it below the top plane of the rack.
Great question, it's right about 2.25" at the most narrow spot with the liftgate up.
Excellent walk through. I wouldn't have attempted this on my own without it. Finished mine yesterday with no major issues. A few additional thoughts for anyone attempting 1. 46:36 - I did pull these tabs out. It felt like a very delicate part of the car (mine is the one without the sunroof). I was able to get the middle of the liner out by sliding it toward the back of the car. There's no need to actually pull them out. 2. I have an odd issue with the A-pillar. Everything looks just like this video, except a single, small black plastic piece fell out of each side. (Anyone know that that might be?) 3. I highly recommend an auto panel trim removal kit. I bought one for $5 on amazon and it is the best $5 I've ever spent. Th-th-that's all folks. Good luck to anyone attempting this. Took me 6 hours total, but 2 of those hours were due to errors.
Thanks for the "review"! I'm glad it was helpful and hopefully future folks will find your notes here helpful for them as well. (I'm not sure what fell out from your A-pillar. I just took mine off again to look and didn't see anything that was both black and looked like it'd just fall off easily.)
Thanks dude!! Looks fantastic!!! Hoping to get mine on very soon!!
You did great. Thanks.
That was an awesome video.
Thank you very much :) Hope it was very helpful!
Anyone know what seat covers he’s using?
Those are the factory Touring trim seats that come in the car
Can you measure how deep the Chanel is on average? And how far apart are the stock bolt holes?
The channel is roughly 3/4" and the stock bolt hole spacing is not uniform, it varies as as you go along the roofline.
@@mnoutback Thanks man; great detailed video!
You live in Utah? Come over and help me with mine :D
Dream on haha, that's a loooooong drive :p
@@wassupluke well damn, I tried 😁
Do you have a trail number?
Love the video. I think I saw a pic of your build somewhere else...how did you mount your full size spare to the prinsu rack?
Thank you, I hope it was helpful to you! I actually built my own mounting bracket out of some Menards aluminum. They mount to the crossbar of the rack and have separate bolts that extend up through the bolt holes in the wheel when placed face down. I have enough sidewall on my tires to float the face of the wheel off the crossbar so it won't rub, and the rubber provides exceptional grip to further stabilize the wheel once it's bolted in place. (Also acts as a sound dampener so there's no vibrational noise from it, just wind noise, as you would expect.
Sure wish you had filmed the plus bolt install so we could've seen what went right and wrong, bud.
I wish I had too. Get a threaded insert tool from your local Menards/Home Depot/Lowes (they're only like $15 and would make it a breeze).
Hi there! I am considering installing the Prinsu rack on my 2021 Subaru Outback, but I have some concerns if I down the road I decide to sell my car, if I am ever going to be able to reinstall the OEM crossbars. Do you have an insight into that?
Great question. You should be able to reinstall the factory rails down the road. You would likely need to just consider using something like larger washers to help reinforce around the preexisting holes that you drilled larger to install the plusnuts for the rack.
Did you fill up the spacers with silicone, or just around the edge on the bottom?
Hey sorry I'm just now seeing this for some reason. I did fill the spacers with silicone as well and have still had no issues with water to date.
This video is very helpful! I could change my outback roof rail! Thank you so much!
I just picked up a 2017 3.6r touring and didn't know it didn't come with cross bars haha So I may just look into the Prinsu! also what tire set up are you running? How are they DD on them?
Another rich white kid living with mommy and daddy. He really has a hard life doesn’t he….
pls give me all stocks image
hi can you tell me if 245/65/17 would fit 1 inch lift?
245/65/17x7.5+35 is the first thing I did to mine and fits with very minimal rubbing on stock ride height.
Hey man, I have the same car, and want to do a Prinsu rack like this. A friend of mine that is a Subaru Tech told me that this rack makes the roof prone to leaking. Have you had any problems with leaks since you installed it?
Hey there Bart! Sorry I'm just now seeing this. I have no issues with leaks after almost two years of having the rack with the using the install techniques shown in my video. I've heard from some Crosstrek folks that got excited and rushed the install only to end up with a leaky roof, so be patient, take your sweet time, and it should turn out nearly bomb proof. Cheers!
Love your Subie man! Keep it up!
What in the holy hell. I think I'll save wrecking my Scooby Roo and by something easy to install.
I watched this vid 3 times already. Ordered the rack for my MY18 OB, now I have cold feet...lol...Nonetheless, this is a great video. Kudos.
Link to roof rack? Prinsu does not make a rack specific to the '19 Forester, what model rack did you install?
Theyre dropping the 19-21 roof rack in February
Sorry I'm just now seeing this. The forester rack is live on their website these days as mentioned in the other reply here :)
Too bad you didn't have your new yellow fogs with all that white powder!
All this for a roof rack ?? Really ?? Not a chance.
Do you remember how far apart the factory mounting points are?
Shot you a message on instagram :) Let me know if I can help you with anything else man!
It's too hard...
What part of it? I can try to help you work through the hard parts :)
Beautiful nature! So as overland Subaru))
Hello! Watching your video from Russia. I didn't get it, did you sleep in your car on 21 min??
I did indeed! I sleep in my car on all my exploration trips :)
14 hours? dang I follow you on IG and am the one getting married before I get the roof rack, but dang that is a ton of work for that rack. question, are you worried about any leakage in those gutter like spots on the top of the car where you bolted the rack in to the roof?
Oh that's you! Hello! :) That's a very good question because I do know of a couple folks who did end up having issues with theirs leaking after the install. For mine I went liberal on my silicone use and haven't had any issue with it after having it up there for almost a full year now. I just took down the headliner to replace the hardware I had gotten to fill the unused holes because what I picked the first time around rusted like mad. When I had it down I looked everywhere and there wasn't even the smallest sign that anything had leaked. :) I'm now just trying to figure out if there's a way I can add a little popup to that part of my video so I can let people know I no longer recommend those brown connector bolt caps because they rust. I'm totally not proficient with youtube so if you know how to do that let me know. :) If you have any other questions too please ask! :)
P.S. For taking the headliner down the second time around it only took me about an hour, and less than that to get it put back up :)
Awesome, so glad you recorded the process. Thanks for sharing and breaking everything down on how you created this beautiful piece of art!
You are very welcome! I'm hoping to continue making more like this to help me get better at video work so if you have ideas for anything else you'd like to see me do let me know!
mnoutback will do!!
Yeah okay so I had fixed some of the quality/sizing issues but when I went to export it again it kept giving me a frame drop error, so if you know how to fix that in Davinci Resolve please let me know. (:
Great video, thanks for sharing! Seems like you’re literally the only KZreadr that’s had the gall to deal with taking down the Outback headliner and actually install this thing! A few questions: 1.) to confirm, you said prior to installing to open the sun roof all the way? Wanting to make sure it being open won’t interfere with the installation, and 2.) in real time, how long do you think it took you to take down and put back up the headliner?
The service guys at the dealership were impressed I did it myself haha. It wasn't all that bad once you get into it. Excellent questions! 1) I opened the sunroof all the way so I'd have every possible access point available for when I was getting it put up (I did it before I disconnected the battery just so I wouldn't have to reconnect it with my dome lights and EyeSight stuff unplugged because I didn't want any of that to get screwed up). 2) It ended up taking me roughly 14 hours start to finish, but that included the time I took to stop and do the video bits throughout, and the extra time to re-tap the one plus-nut I stripped out when I tightened it down too snug. So if you've got the essence of the steps down (for what trim needs removed to get the headliner free and where the screws/snaps are, then it probably wouldn't take more than 8 hours I would guess. Putting the headliner back up and replacing all the trim took a little over an hour for me). Just definitely take your time, and use more silicone than you think you'll need and then a little extra because I know some of the crosstrek guys had issues with theirs leaking and had to go back in and redo their silicone work after the fact and that'd be no fun. If you come up with other questions that the video doesn't answer, or doesn't answer well enough just let me know either here or on Instagram. :)
@@mnoutback Great work Gall indeed.
I have a 2018 outback touring (as well) ... has anyone found a roof rack / basket that mounts directly to the low profile rails, so one doesn't have to buy the cross bars (from Thule or ?)?
Fantastic question! In all my time spent google searching options I wasn't able to find anything that worked directly with the low profile rails (surprisingly, not even FrontRunner was able to figure out a way to mount to those securely enough). That's why I jumped all over Prinsu's rack when I found it and it's worked so well for me thus far. If you find one that works let me know so I can pass it along to anyone else who might be looking for the same thing!
What did you end up installing on top of your roof rack? How long did the project take from start to finish?
Both good questions! I now have my full size spare and some recovery boards up there. It took me about 14 hours start to finish, but that was primarily because: 1) I was trying to video the whole thing and hadn't actually used the video function on my camera before so that was a whole learning curve, 2) I'd never taken down a headliner before and didn't find any good videos on it on youtube so that was pretty much all self-taught as I went, and 3) I stripped one of my plusnuts and had to wait until Menards was open the next day to get some more hardware to fix that. So start to finish was 14 hours for me.
mnoutback if you did it again, no filming just the install how long do you think it would take?
@@davenash2304 I would guess it'd be less than 8 hours depending on how much time you take to be meticulous with the trim removal, plusnut install, and silicon.
Not sure why, but the video won't play. You Install video plays fine. Not sure what happened. Hopefully you can get it fixed, I'm stoked to see it!
That’s weird, someone else said it had that issue for them too. Not sure why. I think it’s working again (?) I didn’t change anything so I don’t know what happened haha
mnoutback right on! I’ll try again!
Thanks for posting this walkthrough. Looks great! I am ordering my rack today. As for the CB question. I'd say you're better off with HAM radio. I've had a ham in all my offload vehicles. You get much longer reception...depending on unit you buy, and I've found more people running HAM vs CB. I'll be installing my HAM radio antenna at the same time as roof rack. Before you buy and install a light on the roof you might want to consider glare off the windshield and hood. I can speak from experience!!! There were countless times I was night driving in Death Valley and unable to see at due to glare from upper light bar. I stopped using it and only used my bumper mounted lights.Unless you plan to plasti dip your hood the help absorb glare, you might want to consider sticking with lights on the front bumper. Just my .2
I'm glad it was helpful to you! And thank YOU very much for the insights from your experience with the upper light bar and HAM radio! I'm definitely going to do more looking into HAM and try and figure out how to build that into my setup.
1:06.00 to 1:09.00 pretty gnarly rocks! LOL at 1:11.00 paved road found, turns around to continue off roading adventure!
Dude yeah that descent down the rocks was insane! At one point I thought I high centered myself and ruined the trip, but I ended up making it down fine, I was just pretty nervous because that was the most difficult section I've ever done in the outback. It was quite the adventure! :)
What's the difference in body design that this will work on the 2014 but not the 2013? I thought both were Gen4 and thus wouldn't have significant redesign differences.... Edit: btw, looks great man!!
Actually that's a fantastic question and I'm with you on that one. I'm pretty sure the rack should work for the 2013 just as well as it would on the 2014 but to be on the safe side I would reach out to Prinsu and ask them if they're able to confirm it'll fit.
Thank you for making this install vid. Loved it. Eases a few concerns for me 😉
Nice job! Did you consider installing a CB or other radio antenna while your roof liner was down? Or roof lights for that matter? Running wiring would have been super easy at that point.
Excellent questions! In short: yes. The majority of my off-pavement time so far has been spent in areas without cell coverage so the CB antenna is definitely on my list of things to add, as is a lightbar (and a full size spare for safe keeping). And yes it would have been a perfect time to install either of those when I had the roof liner down. However, the roofrack used my last bit of the mod budget for the time being, and I am still researching antennas and lightbars to plan out what will be the best fit for my usage. So the antenna and light bar are in the works but won't happen for a bit. If you have recommendations for either I'd love to hear your input. :)
Had to make a quick snack because this is a movie! 😂 good work!
Yeah it took quite a while to install, quite a while to go through all the clips afterward, and quite a while to upload 😂 What’d you get for a snack? :p
Hey I know this guy, he is like kick ass!!!
Obvi my Avci 🤙🏻
Oh man seems like soo much work but at the same time I just found out about this roof rack and I am certain I need it.
It’s actually amazing and so worth it! The hardest part of the install was teaching myself how to take down the headliner since I wasn’t able to find any other videos showing how to do it. So hopefully this is helpful for people!
Well done! Now you need to start uploading some off roading videos!
Thank so much man! I'm gonna work on it! I need to pick up a gopro on the cheap somewhere and mount that on my fancy new roofrack haha (if you do nothing else, scroll to the end of the video for the broll and bloopers lol)
