Extreme offroad in a Bronco Sport Badlands. Is it any good?

In this video I really push the limits of the Bronco Sport. Back at Uwharrie off-road park, I decided to go straight to the most difficult trails first. Daniel trail is very steep and has a lot of very large rocks to negotiate. other parts of the trail are very loose and offer very little traction. But the Bronco Sport is like a little mountain goat! It did sustain some damage to the plastic door protector and lower part of the front bumper, but that is to be expected since this car is almost showroom stock. In a later part of the video, I test out the Mud/Ruts setting on the G.O.A.T. modes. It didn't go so well. But for what it is, essentially a grocery getting crossover, it is truly amazing off-road! Thanks to all who watch and please take a minute to share this video with a friend.

@@SpaceTravel1776 the problem is the wait for the bigger Broncos. I believe it's still over a year. We just picked up our sport lastnight which we ordered the day after Thanksgiving in November. Funny thing. My Wife said to me she really wanted a Bronco. I was excited. Took her to the Dealership, showed her the Bronco and she said, what’s that? That’s when my heart sunk. She meant the Bronco Sport. So, I’ve been watching and reading up on the Sport so I could show her she should get The Bronco instead. After everything I’ve read, watched and seen. Im good with the Sport. She’s not going rock climbing. We live in South Florida. Very impressed.

It's quite surprising for a unibody SUV, Ford did well with the angles and the traction control seems to spin the tires a lot less than Subaru's system.

The one thing that keeps me from having a Bronco Sport in my driveway is the tow capacity. Maxes out at 2200 lbs. You can get the Escape with the same engine rated at 3500 lbs. I don't intend on doing any serious off-road with one but it would be nice to tow the side by side (wolverine x2 xtr @ 1700lbs plus trailer weight). The Maverick you can get the 4K tow rating but in order to get the dual clutch rear locker like the Bronco Sport they force you to buy it in the Tremor package which then drops the Maverick down to 2k tow. Each model is so close to checking off all the boxes but not quite.

How much tire clearance do you have at full lock and full articulation and have you tried a larger diameter tire, like a 245/75/16 or a 245?70/17?

It has plenty of clearance. A bigger tire would fit with some trimming but honestly I’d rather not sacrifice the gearing. My Speedo is dead on with these tires too, according to a gps speedo app

Supposedly in Sand Mode it will let you keep some wheel spin / speed, and you might have been able to do it with the Sand Mode.

I tried it in the snow and none of the modes or disabling advance trac would allow it to spin for long.

So...a year later and my BS badlands goes to the dealership for its RC lift kit. I was told its not as good as yours or the new one from woolworth motorsport out of las vegas. But..installed at the dealership for less than $1000. Now as a retired tank mechanic of 36 years as well as looking at the other rigs I build on my channel, you can see I could of installed it. I thought though, for $500 I ain't crawling around in the dirt! LOL!! 14 April it goes in!! Also, I have learned as well that if in deep mud or snow, brake torque it first and it has a massive amount of power. Just step on it though? Feels like a tiny 4cyl. LOL!!!

Unbelievable. Is the Badlands the only trim with locking diffs?

  • @hrg_tv

Yes. Although they are not locking diffs in the traditional sense. It is more electronic and less mechanical. Call it what you will, the results are proof that the system is effective.

Is there a reason to do a coil over lift kit? I feel like the ride of the BS is horrible and a coil over lift could help it a lot.

I have a 21 badlands and have a question, what is the biggest 16” tire I can get under it? It has the factory 1” lift, if I add the hrg 1.5” lift, will that be a .5” lift over stock after taking out the factory 1”?? Thanks

I have 245/70/16 tires on mine. You could go bigger if you modified the fender liners. There is no “lift kit” that you can remove. The badlands/ first edition is lifted with different springs and shocks.

Not with traction control turned on. That was the issue. Power stopped once he began slipping. Turn it off he would have been able to use the momentum while slipping to climb the mud.

The bronco would dominate a jeep with open diffs. But against a rubicon it would fall short. I’ve driven a Wrangler Rubicon, a Wrangler Sport, as well as a Gladiator Rubicon on 37s in Moab Utah and in the Nevada/California desert. I can tell you the difference between the Rubicons and Sport is vast. I plan on getting out to Moab this year with the Bronco and doing a matchup against my Raptor. Should be fun!

A base Wrangler of any year, with max-sized siped MTs aired down, bars disconnected, and cheap lunchbox lockers installed, could likely cruise all over this stuff without issue. It's that easy to make a base Wrangler of any generation a relative offroad beast.

It has both center and rear locking diffs. The front uses torque vectoring which acts like a locker. If only one wheel has traction, it will pull. It’s pretty amazing really
