10 things I hate about the BRONCO SPORT after 1 year of ownership

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Looking for a lift kit for your Bronco Sport?
hrgoffroad.com/product-catego...
It was challenging to come up with 10 things. Some of them are admittedly nit-picking. But there were a few build quality issues with my particular Bronco Sport. Despite the minor issues, I still love it.
Here are the 10 in order
1: overzealous traction control
2. poor underbody protection
3. bad location for bottle opener
4. storage access
5. poor chassis rigidity
6. interior rattles
7. defective headlight
8. broken windshield
9. rear brake squeal
10. vulnerable front bumper

As an owner of a BS badlands I just wanted to give my experience. I don't like how traction control can't be turned off entirely, but I've learned to work with it. With software updates, ford may fix that annoyance in the future. The bottle opener wasn't thought out, but who uses one or buys a car because of it anyway? The tire storage wasn't thought out, but I never need to open it unless I'm changing a tire. I've parked on a lot of uneven roads and curbs and my trunk has never had a problem closing. No door rattling for my BS. No head light noise. The engine sounds terrible! sometimes I think somethings wrong, but that's just how it sounds. A S&B cold air intake helps it sound better. I haven't broken a windshield yet, but a small physics lesson. Because the window doesn't have much of an angel, the force of an object hitting the windshield is much greater than if it hits an angled windshield. My badlands doesn't have the back up brake noises. Aftermarket JCR off road Skid plates and rock slider definitely save your bumper, catalytic converter and fuel lines. Should've been standard on the badlands, but whatever. Overall I really wish I had this car sooner, but that's what makes me enjoy even more. There are lots of reports of issues with bronco sports (mostly the 1.5L models) but I haven't had any issues and I absolutely love mine. Sorry that was long, but maybe this will help someone who's trying to decide if this is the right car for them.

Use “Sand” mode when you don’t want any throttle cut. I find that’s the only mode that works when you want deliberate wheel spin without any computer intervention. This works great in the mud, climbing hills. Also, this is a unibody design. EVERY unibody SUV flexes as demonstrated with the rear hatch - can’t be avoided. Plastic is lightweight and good enough for the vast majority out there. Adding a skid plate works.

My 2021 Big Bend was making the same horrible howling brake noise when backing up. Ford issued a service bulletin for this problem. Take it to your local dealership and they will install new rear caliper bushings covered under warranty. It seem to stop that horrible noise coming from the brakes on my bronco sport.

I have a Big Bend. 19 months and 16000 miles and still very happy with it. Zero warranty issues. I have experienced the brake noise, but only after driving in a fair amount of snow then parking in garage. The next day they squeal when backing out of garage. Not a big deal to me. Mine has no squeaks or rattles. A little road noise but that’s it. Told friends and family that the only time I would go off reading is if I missed a curve😁 Combined mileage is a little under 27 mpg.

I drive highways and put on less than 8Kmiles/annually. The big selling feature for me was that my dog kennel fits in the back without wasted space (no slanted rear view window). #2 feature- It makes tight u-turns, which is essential when trying to get a good parking spot in a lot. #3 - Ample storage for luggage/cooler - even with the dog kennel) for our weekend get-always. #4 - I love the aesthetics.

I’ve got a 21 Big Bend that was squealing everytime I got in or slowed down with light input. May try changing the brakes to a better quality kit like Stoptech z16, z23, or z35 kits. I’ve had good luck. The kits change the rotor and pads to performance oriented ones and it’s stopped all the squeal on mine. My parents have a 22 Outer banks that had a similar but slightly different squeal and still do. I think it has to do with either the quality of the pads, rotors, or both.

I’m thinking the floor comes out it’s just more difficult with the shelf. Instead of being able to open it fully and lift it out like that you’re gonna have to reach under to get it free and pull it out. There’s nothing blocking it from being pulled straight out if lifted up. He just wants to use it for storage but it’s made to be removed fully to access the spare. If you watch when the floor is lifted up all the way it’s actually pulled out where it would be past the bumper while being lifted

LED headlights have a fan on the back of them to dissipate energy bc they don’t use as much as incandescent bulbs, but automotive wiring has changed much so the extra energy is usually run into a resistor or fan to dissipate it off

Also, when backing up at night, mostly cold nights, the license plate lights and the exhaust block the view of the rear view camera. It's just another thing Ford did not think through. I feel like they cheaper out on the brakes and rotors and that’s why they squeal so bad. I’ve had similar issues on other cars and the Stoptechs have always fixed the issues I’ve had. Thats Ford for ya. Cheap parts, cheap material, numerous problems and recalls. I had a 2020 Escape which is basically the same everything. 34,000 miles it needed a new transmission. The day I scheduled the appt to get it diagnosed is when the Engine Fire recall about the injectors came out. Cancelled the appt. Drove to the dealer and traded it in. Recall #5 in a little over a year of ownership and a new trans before 100,000 miles i ridiculous. Fords quality is going downhill with no brakes and every one of their models prove it. I went with the Equinox after the Escape and got the 2.0T model with the factory towing. Flawless. Bought it with 4,000 miles and it now has 37,000 miles and not one issue. Mechanical or quality. As it should be with a vehicle under 100,000 miles. I (Family and Friends as well) will never look at Ford again.

Stoptech Z16, Z23, or Z35 pad/rotor kits. I’ve got z23s on the front of my 21 big bend, and z35s (bc they are for towing) on the back. No more squealing that I’ve noticed. I think it’s more Ford cheaper out on the brakes to make the car cheaper, both to produce and sell. Mine had bad squeal not if you were hard on brakes, but if you were light on them slowing down. Shouldn’t have to use the whole pedal to slow down, just light input. So far no issues.

I've found that when blasting through snow drifts, it will cut power so I went to mud and locked the diffs, no power cut by computer. Slippery is for old women on slippery roads, just deadens everything. Rock crawl not only locks everything up, it also modulates the throttle. (1/2 throttle input is only 1/4 throttle for example, for more precise control. Noisy lights? Mine too, from new, don't care. It's a cooling fan running inside the headlight. Bought my 21 in Jan of 22, so far I've ripped the stupid inner fender out, tore off the felt "cover" underneath 4 times now and since it's tore bad, I used an aluminum sign as a solid backing to screw the felt to, then installed it all at once. Broke the windshield (it's an "intelligent" windshield) so that was $250 deductible ($3400 quote on windshield!!!) Got 245/70/17's on it and the lift kit gets installed on the 14th!!

Stoptech z16, z23, or z35 kits are a available, I have the latter two on mine as (z23 on front, z35 on back as z35 are towing brakes) and all my squealing went away. I personally think for just cheaper out on the rotors and pads from factory to make the car cheaper to sell and make. I’ve used the stoptechs on other cars I’ve had with similar squealing issues and they’ve always worked for me.

LOL. Dude what do you expect with the body flex issue and under carriage? This model was not designed for Uhrockie. It's an Escape SUV essentially. Get a Bronco Badlands or Wildtrak if you have that expectation. Some of the other issues I can understand like the cargo thing and the rattles - that is unacceptable to me.

As an extreme, off-the-road driver, you shouldn't expect any vehicle to stay in perfect condition after using it for a while. The skid plate arrived very quickly and was super easy to install. It is very nice! My only question/comment is about using the provided spacers (it is currently installed per directions). I’m guessing your testing showed it was best to keep this separation from the bumper cover, but since it does not triangulate up top - I am thinking about a flush or near-flush installation and possibly modifying the angle to avoid “shoveling” in steep approaches in mud, etc. Thoughts?

After almost two years with mine, I can attest to the rear brake noise when backing up, and the fact I don’t have a steel skid plate. I need to get one installed and have it quoted, because the shelf in the trunk was a main reason I went with a base version over paying $10k more for a little decal and 18” rims. I feel like all I need for this baby are a 1.5-2” lift, my grille guard, and that steel skid plate and I’d be happy with what I have. Maybe upgrade to 18s or 21” rims depending on the space allowed by the lift.

@@BluRadoZ71 You’re correct, base and Big Bend have 1.5L 3 cylinder engines and produce about 182 HP and the badlands is a 2.4L I4 which can produce about 250 HP, small difference in my book, but beyond the added goat modes in the badlands, badlands just has more bells and whistles like fog lights, leather seating, cross bar for the roof rack as optional, etc.

2000lb towing capacity. The Maverick can tow up to 4000lb. The Escape was able to tow up to 3500lb. The Bronco Sport is built on the same platform, so why is it so neutered in towing capacity? A Bronco Sport with traction diffs and at least 3500lb of towing, + MPG and price like a Maverick FX4, would have me at a dealership for a test-drive. I have a utility trailer, so I don't need a cargo bed, but I want to get a 3000lb boat, and I have a 50-mile commute in snow country.
