Early Christianity on: Understanding God the Father

What can we know about God the Father? About Him, can we know nothing, all things, or some things? We are expected to understand God? What did the early Christians say about all this?
This is the first video on God the Father. It is appropirate to start a series of videos this way since it can be very difficult to fully understand the Father.

    1 Timothy 3 : 16 "As everyone must confess, great is the secret which GOD has revealed to us in our religion; he who was manifested in the flesh ; he who was vindicated by the Spirit ; he who was seen by angels ; he who has been preached among the nations ; he in whom men have believed all over the world ; he who was taken up in glory."

    Jesus also said "he that hath seen me hath seen the Father" (John 14:9). While we cannot fully comprehend God, we can comprehend enough for our Salvation. And this should suffice until we see Him with unclouded eyes : "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known" (1 Cor. 13:12). Therefore, God the Father is not totally incomprehensible and this, I believe, is what the early Christians believed. Not that the Father a complete creation or utterly incomprehensible like many Christians now believe. "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." (John 17:3)

  • @PostApostolicChurch

    @PostApostolicChurch

    By universalism, do you mean that every human being will become "universally" reconciled to God? No, this was not a belief in early Christianity. The only exception is Origen who believed in the EVENTUAL universal reconciliation of everyone to God. Have you seen my video on Origen of Alexandria? Based on your question, that video is worth checking out. Thanks for asking and God bless!

    Thank you for commenting. It might seem that the Father is such a mystery, we couldn't know anything about Him. While it is true that the Father is a mystery to our understanding, there is a whole lot we can know about Him. What we know is what has been revealed in the Scriptures. For example, the next handful of videos in this series are about very, very important things we know about the Father. God bless you!

    Aristides A.D. 125 is in grave error for the Bible and Jesus always refers to God the Father. If either had referred to "mother" in any way, I would accept it, however this is not the case.

    Did the Christians before nicene creed believe that they were all co-eternal and equal ?

  • @PostApostolicChurch

    @PostApostolicChurch

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you for commenting. Yes, the Pre-Nicene Christians believed the Persons of the Divinity were co-eternal. Never were any of them created at any time. The Pre-Nicene Christians believed that the Persons of the Divinity are equal in nature. That is, all of them are deity/divine/God. All of them are fully God. But the Pre-Nicene Christians believed that the Persons of the Divinity are not co-equal in authority. As we see in the Scriptures, Jesus the Son of God submitted to Father God in authority and said that the Father is greater than He. God bless you!

    @@Pope.juicee No, I don't think it is a problem if we don't know what the Divinity's relationship was like before Jesus took on flesh. What the Muslims do with that lack of information is their deal. However, we know what Jesus' relationship was like with Father God after He took on human flesh. When it comes to that information, most of which comes from Jesus Himself, the Muslims do not believe Jesus' teaching about Himself.

    To the account manager: I would seriously consider not quoting from a modern version such as the Holman Christian Standard which you do (5:59), and getting back to the real Bible (AV). Why? for one reason, they're untrustworthy! You quoted from Isaiah 55 which reads "For my thoughts are not your thoughts...." The HCSB says "For my counsels are not your your counsels...." The Hebrew word 'mach-ash-abah' is never translated 'counsels'; its translated as 'thought, purpose, work, imaginations, cunning, invent, means.' The 47 divines of the AV had it right when they translated it 'thoughts.' The HCSB is taking huge liberties by translating it 'counsels' !

    GOD IS ONE SPIRIT. READ WELL - THE ONENESS OF GOD AND IN GOD IS ESSENTIAL FOR OUR SALVATION. IT IS NOT - INTELLECTUAL CALCULATION THAT REVEALS THIS TO US BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT THROUGH DISCERNMENT. ACTS 4 13 When they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realised that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and recognised that they had been with Jesus. JESUS ANSWERED, “THE MOST IMPORTANT IS, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL: THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD IS ONE. EPHESIANS 4:5-6 ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM, ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL, WHO IS OVER ALL AND THROUGH ALL AND IN ALL. JOHN 10:30 I AND THE FATHER ARE ONE.” JOHN 14:20 IN THAT DAY YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM IN MY FATHER, AND YOU IN ME, AND I IN YOU. JAMES 2:19 YOU BELIEVE THAT GOD IS ONE; YOU DO WELL. EVEN THE DEMONS BELIEVE-AND SHUDDER! ZECHARIAH 14:9 AND THE LORD WILL BE KING OVER ALL THE EARTH. ON THAT DAY THE LORD WILL BE ONE AND HIS NAME ONE. JUDE 1:4 FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE HAVE CREPT IN UNNOTICED WHO LONG AGO WERE DESIGNATED FOR THIS CONDEMNATION, UN-GODLY PEOPLE, WHO PERVERT THE GRACE OF OUR GOD INTO SENSUALITY AND DENY OUR ONLY MASTER AND LORD, JESUS CHRIST. ISAIAH 43:10 “YOU ARE MY WITNESSES,” DECLARES THE LORD, “AND MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN, THAT YOU MAY KNOW AND BELIEVE ME AND UNDERSTAND THAT I AM HE. BEFORE ME NO GOD WAS FORMED, NOR SHALL THERE BE ANY AFTER ME. GALATIANS 3:20 NOW AN INTERMEDIARY IMPLIES MORE THAN ONE, BUT GOD IS ONE. 1 TIMOTHY 2:5 FOR THERE IS ONE GOD, AND THERE IS ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MEN, THE MAN CHRIST JESUS, ISAIAH 45:21-22 DECLARE AND PRESENT YOUR CASE; LET THEM TAKE COUNSEL TOGETHER! ISAIAH 44:8 FEAR NOT, NOR BE AFRAID; HAVE I NOT TOLD YOU FROM OF OLD AND DECLARED IT? AND YOU ARE MY WITNESSES! IS THERE A GOD BESIDES ME? THERE IS NO ROCK; I KNOW NOT ANY.” ISAIAH 44:6 THUS SAYS THE LORD, THE KING OF ISRAEL AND HIS REDEEMER, THE LORD OF HOSTS: “I AM THE FIRST AND I AM THE LAST; BESIDES ME THERE IS NO GOD. 1 CORINTHIANS 8:6 YET FOR US THERE IS ONE GOD, THE FATHER, FROM WHOM ARE ALL THINGS AND FOR WHOM WE EXIST, AND ONE LORD, JESUS CHRIST, THROUGH WHOM ARE ALL THINGS AND THROUGH WHOM WE EXIST. 1 CORINTHIANS 8:4 THEREFORE, AS TO THE EATING OF FOOD OFFERED TO IDOLS, WE KNOW THAT “AN IDOL HAS NO REAL EXISTENCE,” AND THAT “THERE IS NO GOD BUT ONE.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:13 FOR BY ONE SPIRIT ARE WE ALL BAPTISED INTO ONE BODY, WHETHER WE BE JEWS OR GENTILES, WHETHER WE BE BOND OR FREE; AND HAVE BEEN ALL MADE TO DRINK INTO ONE SPIRIT. Seems like Jesus knew who He was dealing with. Seems like Jesus thought the Father could be revealed. Nobody truly knows everything about anybody. Do I know everything about Jesus, my friends or my wife? No. The Father is no different. I have the mind of Christ and so I know the Father probably better than the proto-Catholics we see quoted here.
