Comparing the Septuagint and the Masoretic Using Matthew 20-22

This video continues this series on the Septuagint by going through the New Testament and learning if the New Testament writers used today's Masoretic or today's Septuagint in their quotations from the Old Testament.

    I would say thank you to the *Post -Apostolic Church* for helping me to make the switch to the LXX. Hard to disagree with the facts that you laid out in your videos. Reading the LXX has opened new doors to understanding God's Word. I started with the Brenton version but I have recently bought the Apostolic Polyglot Bible and I'm very happy with it. It is a majority text translation of the different versions of the Septuagint; If there was disagreement between all the LXXs, the Hebrew was consulted and then that was used. Don't quote me but I think that only happened in 4 or 5 verses. Keep up the good work! 2 Tim 2:15

    I did a rather lengthy response to his post where he stated that the LXX was written after the New testament. I called him out to list his source of evidence for the claim he was making and that was deleted as well. If he would only see that the Post-Apostolic Church and others here are only trying to help people see that the Masoretic was edited to discredit Jesus as the messiah.... Had a King James onlist do the same thing elsewhere. After I reposted the comment I made, I did a screen shot proving that he was deleting it. It is very sad that people are so set in there ways that they are unwilling to listen to anything else. Prov 18:13 If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame

    Hey, can you make a video on how the church fathers viewed the Book of Enoch? I've heard that it was extremely popular early on, being quoted by Jude (Jude 14, 15) and in the Epistle of Barnabas. And how Irenaeus vehemently defended the book as being inspired by God. But by the 4th century, it had fallen out of favor, with Jerome denouncing it. But I would really like a video made by you explaining it, and probably giving your own take on the book. Your videos are always fantastic. May God be with you.

    Thank you for commenting. Yes, Jude quotes from Enoch and the Pre-Nicene Christians did talk about Enoch. Enoch wasn't considered Scripture because it was not included in the Septuagint. But yes, a handful of Pre-Nicene Christians considered it Scripture. I have had others ask me to make a video on Enoch. I will add it to my list of videos to make! However, it may be a year before I complete it. God bless!

    Thank you for commenting and for your compliments! :D I'm very happy that the videos have already been a blessing to you. Here are a few options on how to read the Septuagint. -Brenton's translation, which is free. -Orthodox Study Bible. I find this VERY valuable. It also contains the New Testament (NKJV). -Apostolic Bible Polyglot. This is another great translation. It is hard to find, but I found that it is free with a program called E-Sword. I have been using E-Sword since 2003. -NETS. This translation is free on the website (and downloadable as a PDF). The best way to tell if Brenton made a mistake is to read and speak Koine Greek. I know that is a huge task, but it is the best way. I'm in the same boat: I do not know Greek. So I'm left with a couple other options. I could get a Septuagint in Greek and a Greek lexicon and double-check words that way (E-Sword has this). Or, I can look at various translations and compare them. God bless you!

    Thank you for the very good idea. The topic of Sunday/Sabbath worship is one that the Pre-Nicene Christians certainly addressed. There are plans to make a video about that in future. Sadly, I cannot say when it will be complete. The short version is that all Pre-Nicene Christians opposed Sabbath-keeping. That is, Sunday was the primary day for Christians to assemble and worship. From one generation after the apostles, they believed that Sunday was the Lord's day. If there is anything about this topic you would like to discuss in these comments, I'll be happy to discuss them with you.

    Since Mathew seems to follow the MT sometimes and the LXX sometimes, is it possible he quoted from neither and quoted from a now lost Hebrew manuscript that the LXX pulled from?

  • @PostApostolicChurch

    @PostApostolicChurch

    11 ай бұрын

    Very much so! From historical evidence, we know where the LXX came from. However, we do not have any historical evidence where the Masoretic came from. Therefore, scholars have said that the Masorites pulled from another family of manuscripts called the proto-Masoretic. We know nothing about the proto-Masoretic, but it is very ancient. Perhaps there was some type of proto-Masoretic version that Matthew used. However, I would answer this topic another way. I believe Matthew, being inspired by God, used the words and phrases that are from the original. So for us today, Matthew is showing us which version is the original, genuine version. Sometimes the Septuagint got it right, and sometimes the Masoretic got it right. The point of this video series is to determine what the NT says--verse by verse. The second point of this video series is to point out that the Septuagint is correct the majority of the time.

To me it suggests that due to them being, "Simple unlettered and Ordinary People" as often called in the Bible. They were under the impression that only the high priest could say the tetragrammaton verbally still. Or maybe that was copyist who did that, and not the apostles.

  • @PostApostolicChurch

    @PostApostolicChurch

    Thank you for commenting. Good question! The biggest one is the Catholic doctrine of the Pope. There was no universal pope (not even the title) during the Pre-Nicene Church. The Bishop of Rome was a role, but even at the Council of Nicaea, he wasn't close to being the leader of the church. Secondly is their doctrine about Mary. More than any other group of Christianity, the Catholic Church practically deifies Mary. They believe Mary hears their prayers and can forgive sins. Both of those doctrines would have gotten you kicked out of the Pre-Nicene Church. Asceticism is big difference between the Pre-Nicene Church and the Catholic Church. The Orthodox Church also has a lot of asceticism. I'm not sure where the Catholic Church stands on contempt of wealth. I've seen a lot of incredible Catholics that reject wealth, which is very Pre-Nicene. But then, there are some Catholics that take in lots of money and do expensive things with it. What do you mean by sexual relations? Do you mean the Catholic doctrine of priestly celibacy? The Pre-Nicene Church did not believe that. God bless you!

    The fact that the New Testament writers all use "Lord" instead of "YHWH" and the Septuagint also uses the word, "Lord", is strong indication that these writers were heavily influenced by the text that uses "Lord" and not "YHWH". Paul what an Old Testament scholar who spoke in both Hebrew and Greek yet he always used the common name of God (Lord) in his writings to both Jew and Gentile. Since the Greek Old Testament was in wide use in the first century, it makes sense that he should use this "name" (actually, title) rather than the later word, "YHWH". The Septuagint was translated from the Hebrew into Greek but was the form of the Old Testament used for centuries among the Jews throughout the region. Anyone who says that the Hebrew was being used in the first century cannot see the writing on the wall. Why would a scholar like Paul use the Greek form (Lord) rather than the Hebrew form (YHWH)? The reason is simple: He was writing to people who knew the Greek and was not so familiar with the Hebrew. This is important for political reasons. The Jews needed to disprove that Jesus was the fulfillment of scripture so they changed the definitions of Hebrew words in order to affect this change. This is why we hear that the Hebrew word translated, "Virgin" by the Greek translators is now interpreted "young woman". The Greek translators in 250BC did not have a political axe to grind and so they simply translated it, "Virgin". After Mary became the fulfillment of that prophecy, however, they had to change the definition of that word in Hebrew (but they could not change the Greek). Changing word definitions is what dethrones their Messiah and dooms the world. Pretty clever, ain't it...

What you are comparing is the ASV interpretation of what Matthew wrote. Those that vomited out the ASV translated it from the Masoretic. You may want to redo your videos to correct for this error.

    Thank you for commenting. Your timeline of things is correct. I'm not confusing myself. Of course the Masoretic did not exist when Matthew wrote his gospel. The question is whether Matthew quoted from the Hebrew Scriptures of his day (which would later become the Masoretic) or the Greek Scriptures of his day (which would later be called the Septuagint). God bless you!

    I am confused. The one using Yahovahs name is the one I would trust more. Jesus is not even Gods sons name. I certainly wouldnt be using the word lord as it means Baal in Hebrew. Be careful you are not being deceived. The fact we only have Greek translations is a worry as They were Jews reading the torah in jewish synagogs. They have changed gods sons name and taken out the god almightys name for Baal or lord. Come on people get your thinking caps on.

    Why do you put more trust in the words of people who don't even believe that Jesus is the Christ?

    @@shunoinori actually since I wrote this I do not think we know a name for the creator. There is a messiah but christianity is false. They have named him JC and built their own church of lies. He is the WORD. Blessings to you.
