Blizzard spent 5 years creating the most sophisticated and manipulative monetization system ever made, and then in the final couple weeks of development they ported over some Diablo 3 assets and called it a day.

@@zygo0 You'd be shocked at the insane amount of very carefully crafted psychological manipulation that goes into theses "games". You have to frustrate the player enough to want to buy the solution you offer but not enough that they quit entirely, you have to have several different types of currency to help obfuscate the real cost of micro-transactions to the player and most importantly you need to trick players into thinking they ever had a choice; that they're willingly spending their money and not just getting squeezed for every penny they're worth. There are literally dozens more of these tiny factors that need to be fine tuned to make a "good" monetization system.

Exactly, remember the EA representative argument to defend this kind of monetization as promoting "creativity in the gaming industry", that's exactly the creativity she was talking about. The one about making the most abusive, and profitable monetization system possible, with the least effort from those companies like slapping the same assets and just rename their game.

It doesn't take decades as a FTP to max a character. It's impossible. The ammount of crests you get per month for free means at the current rate it would take centuries to max out a character. Then when you add inevitable power creep with "new gems" and so on it's straight up impossible. Not even an immortal could max out a character in Diablo immortal as a F2P.

There was a comment I read here on youtube that went more into the model it looks like they're using here. The basis being an old genre of browser games with scantily clad women who really like lingerie. For this kind of grotesque level of investment depth to succeed, the player can't feel like their investment is ever wasted. So you probably won't see the power ceiling being risen and rendering old money you've spent obsolete, like you see them do in a Granblue Fantasy or Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. He explained it as a series of parallel progression schemes. So today it's gems. Tomorrow, it could be charms. After that, it'll be some other thing to make the numbers go up. And so on. I'm unfortunately not versed in that specific kind of game so I need to research it more.. The one thing I'm absolutely sure they'll never do though: Make characters with stories and 3d models and voices and animations etc, that you can purchase. That costs money and effort, as opposed to selling a number to people. Effort is pure anathema to lazy lazy Blizzard.. This seems like extraordinarily early-market kind of poo from twenty years ago. That they're only able to make viable because they're Blizzard. Everyone else has long moved on from this kind of thing, as competition thinned out the greed and consumers actually want something in exchange for their money. For example, Azur Lane's profit model literally is nothing but cosmetic outfits, and they want everyone to be able to generally get every character. The field is a series of games meant to be played over a long period of time, like an MMO. Normies are only meant to buy the $5 a month subscription plan. Only the desperate, addicted or wealthy can afford imbibing raw gacha currency; that product is literally drugs. .... not even the worst one would sell you a bunch of dumb numbers for $500,000 though...

Just like EA now. Unfortunately people will still play and eventually pay.. That’s all that matters with most developers these days. you know what you should do? try this with the simulator: write down what kind of 5 out of 5 gem you first get and go until you get 6 of that one kind of gem and see how much it cost you. the estimation is based on the idea that every gem gotten is one you need. so 500k is super low balling it. and even if you literally played forever if you don't spend money you can't awaken or resonate which ever needs the cash shop only item. meaning you literally can't max out as free to play. the only way to max out is if you pay money. and the only way to max out within your life time is to spend too much money on slot attempts. and if you want a bank account after playing you only get gems from the trade house which means in the end the best thing for a whale to do is wait for other whales to mine gems and pay next to nothing for it. no playing, just buying and selling. blizzard even solved the bot problem since you can't trade games gotten for free. meaning the only people mining for 5 out of 5 gems are real paying people and not bots. no longer is it pay to win. it is pay to try. because no one is winning, not even the whales anymore.

The more they keep pushing the envelope on micro transactions which are macro transactions in disguise, the more massive the next video game crash will be. If people actually go bankrupt over Diablo immortal i hope this leads to people demanding regulations on micro transactions in video games. If it happened with loot boxes it will happen with regular micro transactions. No one should go bankrupt over a video game. the issue is EA placed actual game progression behind those look boxes, etc with 0 way for people to get it aside from forking over real money. you bought the game at full price then find out that half of it is locked behind loot boxes. its ridiculous. meanwhile immortal allows you to progress for free, on a free download, BUT its a snails pace. they took the gacha formula of games like Genshin, FGO, Azur Lane, Dokkan Battle, and dialed it from a 5 to 100. This shit never lasts long from gacha games out east because its removed but Activision/Blizzard skirts around the laws here in the US since we dont have any actual laws pertaining to these unlike out east.

Its essentially a level of obfuscation that undoes the pity system while masquerading the fact so the gullible won't complain. At first, I thought that the delay of Diablo Immortal was for the PC port. However, after seeing all of this, I have to wonder if someone behind the scenes was trying to prevent the release of this horror of a cash grab, because they knew it would be a PR nightmare for Activision Blizzard. Before Diablo Immoral, I just thought that I would simply boycott their games. Now I won't be satisfied with anything less than hearing that Activision Blizzard is out of business and all of their executives are burning in hell.

You hit the nail on the head with your assumption. Tell you what's gonna happen: seen it again and again and again. The backlash will make them say "we get it, not gonna do it again, next game will not be like this". So, next game, will have microtransactions that max out at about roughly 5k. Thus, they will have made bank on this game and claim to have listened to criticism, even though that 5k would be ludicrous,it would feel very very tame compared to what the fans got. And you know what, it will work. Publications will sing their praises and the customers will be none the wiser since any argument against that practice would be something along the lines of "well,it was much worse". It is an industry standard to create a fictional problem and then pulling it back, instead of eliminating it, to stay in people's good graces. We are being herded very very easily and as such...well, I'm gonna say it: we absolutely deserve this. Have seen this practice, not with these numbers though, again and again and everytime it's the same.
