It's time to let Blizzard die as a company. This game is so unethical even compared to the worst gacha games I've seen. Don't reward this behavior by buying Diablo 4 or any other Blizzard game. Support companies who don't psychologically assail their users and trick them into a 100k+ gambling addiction.

Yeah, there's definitely a certain level within the company where if you go any higher, you are submitting to the devil on your shoulder. Blizzard is no longer what it was from it's D2/Starcraft 1 days. This is a company of millennials now. They're more concerned with keeping the gravy train rolling, rather than staying true to the original vision of quality and entertaining games.

the saddest part of this is that Blizzard knows they will be roasted for the monetization. Example of how pay to skip or paying for convenience can be done right: MMORPG has leveling campaign that's entertaining but also not too time consuming. It's generally accepted that there's nothing wrong with it and that it's beneficial for the player to go through it at least once. However, it's not for everybody and some people are just so busy that what would few evenings for average player will be weeks for them. In that case I don't think it's bad to sell character boost because it's not solution to problem within game, just a problem on the other side of the screen. If the monetization can be kept at that kind of level I'm fine with it. But sadly all kinds of mtx encourage bad game design to indeed sell the solution to a problem that didn't have to exist and usually it's only matter of time before the company needs to prop up their next quarterly earnings a bit and suddenly the games take turn for the worse.

My. Lord. I thought nothing would beat "Star Trek: Trexels" when it came to micro transaction hell, but BOY this game has proved me wrong. It's not even just that it costs $100K to max out your character. It's *ALSO* behind this Kafkaesque insane asylum of various currencies, payout systems, and specific items you have to buy and NPCs you have to interact with. And these geniuses at Activision-Blizzard who developed this game thought that a monetization system like this would be "fun"? Even if I was a multi-billionaire and could throw away money like this I wouldn't do it. Because this is about as entertaining as doing my taxes or going to the f*cking DMV. Actual slot machines are less scammy than this because at the very least there's only one currency to convert to when you put your cash in (credits based on whatever monetary denomination the slot is), plus there's regulation for payout odds. I mean why anyone would even play an Activision-Blizzard game at this point I will never understand, but even beyond that I really don't have the highest opinion of the video game industry at this point. Sure you can have an Elden Ring or Resident Evil: Village every once in a blue moon, plus Indies, but the majority of gaming is some of the worst anti-consumer nonsense I've ever seen. Games like Diablo Immortal are no better than a payday loan joint or a seedy pawn shop exploiting the desperate or those with addictive tendencies. Activision-Bilzzard should've been shutdown after the lawsuit and hopefully MS will just strip mine the IPs and put this organization out of its misery.

I've played lost ark, I've played 5 different gacha games over the course of nearly a decade, and none of them even come close to this level of insanity, evil, deception, manipulation, or greed. Other games are consciously trying to not cross the line into exploiting gambling, addiction and other mental fallacies, because they know the shit they can get into if the line is crossed. Blizz are literally hiring psychologists to figure out how to maximally exploit every gambling, addiction, mental fallacy, as if they were operating an unregulated underground casino. It's actually bananas the evil and cynicism this company has embraced.

It’s become common practice for Microsoft to hire psychologists to help design their game’s cash shop and microtransactions as well. Microsoft, who created and owns 343 industries, hired psychologists to help rip out free character customization and put it in the store for Halo Infinite. They even went as far as replacing the entire progression system that existed in previous games with a battlepass and “challenge system” that was made purposely frustrating to get players to outright purchase levels and “challenge swaps”. I can see Microsoft doing the same with more Blizzard products, as they’ve already ruined Halo

Even though the tragic stories about ruined lives and bankruptcies are piling on, legislation is slow to catch up. They are also capitalizing on the hype/newness of the game to take as much profit as possible so the prices are purposely ballooned. They’re also trying to acclimitize their players with the ridiculously high prices so that they can create “goodwill” when they do lower it eventually. They’ve done their analytics, they know what they are doing. The pricing is intentional. They know they will get away with it. They will milk whatever money they can get from this IP and when the game eventually dies, they can just release another game and do the cycle all over again.

They're trying to recoup as much dev spending as they can on initial release from the FOMO hardcores, big time streamer/influencers, and trust fund players. They KNOW that some whales will pay whatever it takes to get to the top and they wanted to exploit that first. Except game devs know whales don't float games long term. They will squeeze every cent they can out of those previously mentioned groups and take the PR hits from f2p or "dolphin" players until they hit a predetermined drop in player activity. Once that benchmark is met they will back off on this ridiculously greedy and predatory monetization and make it slightly less ridiculous with a gaming journo sweep of "we heard you, the fans, and we are listening" bullshit. Probably one of the most unpopular opinions yet: They should remove ALL of the pay to win mechanics in the game and make the rare and legendary crests as loot drops and basically, just transform the game to be similar to what Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 are. Make it a full fledged game, and just crowd the in game store with cosmetics. The currencies that are in the game can be acquired through playing through the acts and regular elder rifts and greater elder rifts. Just a thought/idea, and I think it would probably be better received and not the same formula a lot of mobile games are these days, cash cows. Also, the legendary gems should drop in greater elder rifts and they should also remove the upgrade system and just make the legendary items kind of how they are in Diablo 3, with some being able to be crafted at the blacksmith. I get what they are trying to do with the game, have it be another source of income, but the way they have done it and made it is just so predatory and unfair. I mean, that's quite a bit of work that they would have to do to the game, but I just think that the gaming industry has enough of these types of games that there doesn't need to be another one following the same exact formula but skinned with a Diablo franchise paintjob. I don't know if it's just me or not, but this beta just seems like a huge scheme just to get people to spend their money on it and then by the time it's fully released, make it even worse. I don't know how much worse it can get but, I love Blizzard, always have, always will, I don't agree with all of their business practices and all of the scrutiny that they have garnered over the years, but the games that I do own from them(Diablo 2 Resurrected, Diablo 3, Starcraft and Starcraft 2) I will always enjoy and keep playing as long as I live.

I have played four different gacha games during my online time: Another Eden, Genshin Impact, Fire Emblem: Heroes and Rockman X Dive (the Taiwan version, hence the Japanese name). Now, all of them suffer from power creep and gacha practices. NONE of them come even REMOTELY close to this, not even close! All of the games here reward your time and effort for grinding out materials, and even the more egregious examples of gacha practices, X Dive and Impact, still let you beat the majority of its content, even the endgame, without having to shell out your wallet (though you still need to engage with the gacha). You might as well play the lottery -- no, it's BETTER to play the lottery than to play Diablo Immortal, with how much money you're spending. This is a shining example of the just how unfathomably greedy the people at Blizzard are. I hope this is the final wake-up call for people to abandon Blizzard for good, and let it rot in the mire it has created. To me, there is no "constructive criticism" to be offered, as they will not listen to it (read: I am not saying to harass them, but know when words are wasted). Simply boycott it and spread the word to treat this, and all of Blizzard's games, like the plague.

It is more that time it changes, currently, the European Union is seemingly starting to seriously look into these issues, and hopefully, one of the heavy countries like France or Germany will outlaw them, and it will cause a ripple effect and a union-wide ban on this predatory practice; and hopefully, the US will follow. As I type this the Federal Trade Commission is holding a workshop on creating legislation to stop loot boxes in the US. There are over 20 advocacy groups that met in Washington two days ago over this very subject. You have to look at this from all sides of the equation. If the FTC goes off halfcocked they either run the risk of infringing on first amendment rights or they leave loopholes so large we end up in a sea of bad legislation that does nothing but waste money. No, this has to be a precise blow that stops all of this from ever happening again. The wheels of justice grind slowly and when it comes to regulating the tech industry even slower. However, looking at what Activision/Blizzard has done here and how overt they're breaking the law...they see the writing on the wall. While the companies likely won't see any real punishment (all involved should be imprisoned) the predatory nature in which they operate will end...not just in Europe but across the US as well.

And after reaper of souls, really nothing unless you count necromancer I guess. And Diablo 2 remake which for some reason didn’t really do it for me. It just seemed lazy, not Warcraft reforged lazy but still, when companies like Microsoft do something like halo 2 anniversary, or square with final fantasy 7 remake, or even the Spyro remakes, idk it just didn’t have charm. Even though it was pretty, it seemed really low effort, and small things like friendly AI and some bs of games from the late 90s-00s wasn’t fixed (off screen lightning snipe anyone?) And 8 years later we get this… I really want d4 to be good. It was gonna be the reason I either upgrade my computer or buy an Xbox series or ps5, depending on what the landscapes for those platforms look like around release. But now…my faith is shaken.

Who could've guessed that a game, that at it's first mention was already panned by the audience, would end up upsetting people on release. Nobody could have seen this coming, least of all the managers who had four years to intricately study the gaming landscape, see the competition in games like Path of Exile (as an ARPG comparison; see also:), Warframe (as a MTX-supported game comparison in general) or Fortnite (as a AAA mobile game comparison). Really, an absolutely shocking and unprecedented situation.

There definitely have been, as Bud Derk said. There's generally 2 methods used, sell just enough premium currency to allow players to spend it on the most commonly bought stuff with a tiny bit left over to promote a further purchase to top up and get something again, maybe a more expensive thing at that. The second is to sell just a little too low to get what the player wants, so they have a mindset of getting the rest by playing but that goads impatience from many players so they'll end up buying a second pack to skip the in-game grind. People are employed by companies all the time to study psychology and how to best exploit people without them feeling exploited.

The truely sad thing, it's that there are people in the comments actively DEFENDING Blizzard's monetization, and calling Diablo 2 a bad game for not having the drop rates that Immortal has after you spend $20 for a SINGLE CHANCE to get legendary gear.

In before Blizzard walks back on some of the egregious monetization and tries to look like the good guy by saying they're "listening to player feedback." I am also cynical enough to believe that predicting the overall response to the monetization and then deciding to walk back on some of it is 100% planned by higher-ups during the development of this game. Either way, it's a shame to think that we can't even have nice things in new video games without either some ridiculous monetization scheme or having to deal with a lack of quality control.

  • @QuasarEE

They probably have it pre-planned; once the whales have bought in for a certain dollar cap, the percentages will rise (negligibly) and the level caps before monetization hits will decrease a bit. But not before whatever that amount is that puts a gleam in that devil Bobby Kotick's eyes.

@@HasekuraIsuna I 100% agree. I was just thinking that Blizzard could implement smaller changes like giving F2P players more legendary crests or reducing the requirements of awakening gear rather than walking back the monetization outright. Basically whatever small thing they could do to look "good" to their wider audience while keeping the existing monetization. But at the end of the day this is all just my theory based on how video game companies (especially Blizzard) seem to handle bad PR nowadays.

You all cried from the second this game was announced so stop pretending like you’re all just blown away that blizzard took this AAA free mobile you were all expecting and out in p2w mechanics. Are you people actually serious? Do you not remember crying about this game when it was announced? Were you expecting a free AAA mobile game with no p2w mechanics? Dude what have you been smoking for the last year that put you and all of these other toddlers under the impression that the game wouldn’t be like this? It’s a mobile game. It’s made 99% for regular casual players and 1% for the whales who will spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a mobile game. To expect anything other than that is not blizzards fault, that’s your fault.

The thing with Gacha games to be considered "decent" enough and "player-friendly" enough is it has to have some sort of more generous trickle rewards. As a trend, if you look at how the trickle rewards of the top gacha games go, they basically give between 10-20 free rolls a month that would normally cost premium currency. They will give you that much, so atleast you're not too far behind, and that's just being completely F2P. This ecludes trickle rewards from other sources, say the "free" portion of the pass if the game has it, and double to triple the F2P rewards if premium. This pass typically costs around 5-10 USD where I am, and generally has an allowance of around 10-20 days. In DI, it's so atrocious that being full F2P gives you ONE ROLL worth of premium currency every month. If you have the premium pass, I heard you get up to 3. And the rates is extremely greedy as well, where the "stingiest" gachas are at around ~1% (Genshin Impact, for example), DI has a retardedly low 0.05%. Imagine how bad and shamelessly greedy this is. The very disappointing thing is the game is actually nice. The developers themselves did a great job. But the marketing, finance and executives relating to "making money" is just so bad I sincerely hope bad karma hits them 100x as bad.

honestly, these games should start with a message " thank you for purchasing/downloading this game, it will be $3 for the first minute, $ o.99 for each additional minute of game play... we already have your credit card number from when you purchased/downloaded the game please note if you are under 10, please inform your parents , unless you can get access to their bank account information" then they should have a repeating bar at the bottom as you play saying things like... "having trouble with this level/boss/grindy bit, don't fret, just join our online temporary loan site, where we loan you what you need to pass that level, and you pay us back, at 40% interest" i can just see an advertising mascot who would show up mid game...It's E.A. I might be totally wrong here, but my understanding is that investors pay for a game to be made. It's those investors who are probably hammering down on this whaling stuff. If a games company wants to remain noble, they should just reduce the scope of their games so as to keep costs down and greedy investors off their backs.

I 100% believe in the conspiracy theory, that says: That they put in such unplayable bad odds in from the start, just so that they can "lower" them to more reasonable (but still unacceptable) levels that the game was always meant to have. The new monetization will still be unacceptable but now they can leave them way too high but pretend to have fixed the issue for the news and so that players feel like it's now "fair". Way less people will complain, once they pretended to fix it once. It's like launching a product already on sale, when the always intended price is the discount. It's fakes the feeling of a good deal and can trap consumers.

I play Star Trek Fleet Command on mobile and PC and much of what you're describing here is also standard for that game. To max out a character would cost way more than £120,000 in that game. It's absolutely disgusting what gaming has become, I started gaming when you could go and buy a Spectrum or C64 game for £3 and you got the entire game.
