I don't know, but I think the Ref was premature calling the fight right at that moment. Fighters sometimes take some beatings, in a recovery mode. I don't think Donovan was really devastated at that moment. Struggling, yes, but that was a bad judgment on the Ref's part. It would have been worthy to be able to witness the next round, but it is true that Tommy was mostly dominating in the fight

@@rodneydukes7616But see, Round Six, the video doesn't show the Standing 8 Count totally, but the question really is, how did the Ref feel justified, calling it....Donovan didn't go down to the canvas in any way, he wasn't hanging on the ropes. Those are the prerequisites for a count, not just a boxer seeming to struggle. Only when a boxer is helpless, and then the fight made be judged that it is a TKO.

When a boxer resists to fall and also tends to rely on ropes to avoid falling, he may get badly injured from all these continuous punches. Referee was right to save him as he saw he had no strength to fight back but insisting to not fall.

Tommy recovered nicely from that knockdown, as he did against Carl Williams. It sorta makes you wonder if the Mercer fight would have turned out differently, had the ref not fallen asleep on the job. I know, I know... but he was on a hangover when he fought Bentt, and Lewis was just a hulk of a man, who reigned-in the "era of the giants" in the heavyweight division, wherein 6 foot 5 inch freaks of nature took over and still rule supreme.
