I saw the fight live on TV, too. Had no idea we were watching something so historic. Maybe it's memory playing with me, but seems like there was commotion in the post-fight about Kim collapsing and losing consciousness. So, even though he died days later, there was an awareness on live TV that something bad just happened. And they pronounced Kim's name as "duke" not "duck."

Look up Emile Griffith v Benny "The Kid" Parrett - apologies if my spelling is wrong. That footage is horrifying but I think it was the 1st fight televised live to result in one of them dying (1962 perhaps?). See the footage and Parrett gets caught on the ropes while unconscious and they hold him up so not a knock down and the ref is too slow stepping in and either stopping it or starting 8 count but Griffith kept landing powerful headshots (something like 15-20 consecutive blows to the head in about 5 seconds - GAME OVER!) which accumulated and ultimately resulted in Parrett's death from SEVERE concussion and subdural haematoma (again apologies if spelling is wrong). Like Mancini, Griffith wasn't the same afterwards and lost his killer instinct, ironically, by killing someone. I remember a movie, think it was called "Ring of Fire - Emile Griffith Story" Such a heartbreaking story - I cried for Griffith watching that. Parrett taunted Griffith for being homosexual and Griffith was PISSED at Parrett, wanted to punish him but didn't want to kill him - Parrett was hyping the fight, much like Ali for Thriller in Manila where he racially taunted Frazier (ironic for a black man to call another a gorilla because of how it rhymed and Frazier inflicted SEVERE damage on Ali as a result and would have undoubtedly contributed to his parkinsons- BOTH nearly died from that fight and there was MAJOR bad blood between them for decades afterwards - keep in mind if the movie "Ali" is to be believed [Will Smith played Ali] Frazier supported Ali financially while Ali was exiled because he refused the draft and Ali tried humiliating Frazier to hype their fight. I lost respect for Ali for that and gave it to Frazier - such an incredible boxer who hasn't received enough credit in my book, MY #1 GOAT!) Found it in full! kzread.info/dash/bejne/nYGg3MyQd66eYJs.htmlsi=JVSWBhHBCYeBL7vd 😢 have tissues within reach.

I remember that fight. It was tough and brutal. Both men gave it their all. Kim led early, but as the fight wore on, it was apparent that Mancini was the better conditioned fighter. The beginning of the end came at the outset of the 13th round, when Mancini went on the attack for a full minute. The referee wouldn't have been faulted had he stepped in and stopped the fight at that time. Very tragic all around: Duk Koo, his mother, and Mr. Green. RIP to all of them. Never mind not being the same fighter; Mancini wasn't the same MAN after the Kim fight. I know MMA fans and casuals say boxing is boring, but the sport went through these times. And with all its rich history, saw fighters punch drunk way too early. Fighters today have adjusted, and 12 rd decisions are so much more common because matches don't emphasize these kind of slug fests. MMA is still an infant compared to boxing, but I think something bad has to happen and this generation of fighters will display the same kind of damage. Elbows and knees to the head, aren't magically less damaging.

It wasn't just this fight that changed things it was also the Pryor/Arguello the same month that ended in brutal fashion that made the Boxing organizations to consider shortening Championship fights from 15 to 12 rounds. The Larry Holmes/Tex Cobb fight also fought the same month which was a 15 round total mismatch also played a part. The WBC was the first to act cutting it's Championship rounds from 15 to 12 beginning in 1983. I believe the WBA started in 1986 if I remember right. The IBF formed in 1984 and they were sanctioning 15 round fights I know until 1986 so it was shortly after that they went to 12.

The problem was Cobb continue to come forward and throw punches even though he was outgunned. Tex went out and partied after the fight into the wee hours of the morning. Tex continued to fight and did ok but never really got that many more opportunities to fight on network tv against another ranked Heavyweight. Thank you for this video. As a Korean immigrant, I was just 10-years old when my dad and I sat down to watch this match while living in the Bay Area. In 1982, Korea was not even close to being known by many people in America, so seeing anything about Korea - much less an actual Korean person - on TV was exceedingly rare. I remember how emotional my dad - who was a huge boxing fan - got seeing Kim taken away on a stretcher. It was the first time seeing my dad like that and I also vividly remember feeling this immense sense of pride in being Korean for the first time.

They were all laughing at Kim’s name and making mean but innocent enough jokes about it, how it sounded etc. the. When he collapsed a short while after the match was over, they all became silent. Then when they found out he died days later they both said prayers for his family and asked forgiveness for mocking him. Not sure if they knew about Kim’s mother or the referee’s tragedies, though. Sad ending for a promising fighter. Mancini seems like a great guy, humble and unfortunately guilt ridden.

I think the other networks did as well back then. Being a kid and a young amateur boxer myself, I watched every fight I could back then. I liked Ray and he did give Arguelo some problems early but you kind of just knew Arguelo was taking him to the deep water and it was only a matter of time. I really never heard of Kim before this fight but he was a highly ranked contender. I don't think he had fought much away from his home though. He was a good southpaw as I recall. He won a lot of the early rounds but it was a slug fest. Ray believed he had a duty to give the fans their money's worth and fought non stop. But Kim was countering beautifully. I can't remember which round but at some point the tide turned and Ray was getting the better of most exchanges. He hurt Kim the round before the knockout. And the knockout itself came at the very beginning of the round. Ray charged out like a bull and hurt him quickly. The ref jumped in as fast as he could. Who knows when the internal bleeding may have started though. A person can hit his head and seem just fine only to fall unconscious hours later do to intracranial bleeding.

It's arguable he could have stopped it in the 13th rounds but Kim had been doing great and was winning though he was slowing down. One could also argue his corner could have thrown in the towel but they didn't. Boxing is a brutal sport and fighters are often tired and beat up but they're accustomed to the punishment. He hit his head very hard when he fell and him going through extremes to drop a bunch of weight might also have been a factor. It's all hindsight.

This fight changed me as a boxing fan, too. We used to love to see a guy get pounded around the ring for most of a fight, and then come up with that wild haymaker and win by knockout. This fight made me see that for what it is. The knockout response is a mercy. Some guys aren't wired right, and become professional punching bags. (Chuck Wepner comes to mind.) But sometimes a guy gets alllmost knocked out once or twice, and it's like the switch gets turned off and they just can't get knocked out. Then they take tremendous brain damage. Rarely do they come up with that wild haymaker, and the few times they do aren't worth the cost.
