Tank, Frye, and Severn were superheroes to me as a kid. I really enjoy these retrospectives.

I have never seen the 3 people that you mentioned in person. However, I did see Olek, Bass Rutin, Ernie Shaver, The heavy boxer who was called the "Hardest hitter in Boxing", Rob Kaman (former Dutch Kick boxing champion), Royce Gracey, Oscar Del la Joya, Dan Inosanto a Philippine martial expert who was a good friend to the late Bruce Lee, etc. ALL of them were gentlemen outside the ring, dojo, or fighting in other venues!
I remember watching him when you had to rent UFC VHS tapes from the local movie store
David "Tank" Abbott still in our minds as a formidable and menacing street fighter...
Tank Abbott never had a boring fight. Every one of his fights, win or loose, was always super exciting to watch. He is a legend!
Tank was Iconic definitely a Hall of Famer
I loved Tank! He was an amazing phenomenon
Tank Abbot was one of my favorites, back in the day.. What a monster in the ring!
Dude was the face in the beginning. Deserves to be in the HOF

He was entertaining but deserves to be nowhere near the HOF. Champions are in the HOF. Tank beat up a bunch of tomato cans and lost to every reputable fighter he faced. He’s a bar room brawler, he’s fun to watch, but he’s no hall of famer.

@jjones9822 well Tank was the reason why the UFC was entertaining and marketable. I'm sure Dana White could definitely vouch for the fact, that Tank was a reason to buy the UFC and turn it into the most popular and best fighting organization ever! There Is always exceptions when it comes to HOF status. Pioneers are always commended and recognized for their contributions. Champ or not!

Blasphemy. Hall of fame for eating cheeseburgers. That will never happen. If vitor Belfort isn’t in the hall of fame tanks fatass will never be in the hall. Tank couldn’t hold the jock of Tito Ortiz head-Melodie ass. He has more head than he has body. much less vitor belfort. Clearly u r trolling and I respect the joking around.

@@jjones9822 Your comment just shows you weren't either alive or into combat sports in the 90's. Hall of Fame is not just for champions. It's the hall of FAME not the Hall of Champions and Tank Abbott is what made the UFC FAMOUS back then. He represented the every man fighter. The guy that could be your buddy who would cause havoc in bars. Not just some yoked up dude who looked down on people who weren't ripped. He was a HERO to people. I think you would be shocked that the Hall of Fames of other sports is literally LITTERED with non champions. So shut up with that brainless argument.
Dude was a wrecking ball!!! HOF material, he helped build the UFC.

Agreed win or lose loved watching him and always rooted for Tank.
Abstract: The guy won against nobodies and lost to any skilled fighter he met (Severn, Taktarov, Frye, Belfort, Mir)... Still, he brought the heat and the excitement.

Well shit, referring to everyone who didn't become champion as a nobody is only going to make your case seem stronger if the reader's BS detector has "made in China" stamped onto the bottom of it.

Absolutely, none the less he was the face in the early days.
Tank Abbott only has two modes; sleeping and beast.
Tank Abbott vs John Matua was the first UFC fight I had ever seen. All most 30 years later, I'm still watching UFC.
Would have liked to see him fight Butter Bean !

He's like a Grizzly
I remember watching him fight rage in the cage in Hawaii back in the 90s. Also in the original ufc 🐸🍺🔪🔥
He's the goat of UFC I use to rent them at blockbuster! Great times
i don't think you're supposed to "strangle" people in football, but i'm not gonna pretend to be an expert.
Tank Abbot may not have been formally trained but he had some very precise punching skills. He was a scary man in the octagon, I would have not wanted to face him in a dark bar parking lot for sure!!! I loved to watch him in the octagon because he instinctively knew and understood how to counter so many different attack and take-downs! He was the exact type of fighter that the UFC was created for, to give them a place to brawl and not have to worry about being arrested!!!!

He trained boxing in Westminster, California and wrestled. It was a different time so people trained where they could, MMA gyms weren't a thing. He got a lot of ring time in the street, very true

"Precise" is the one thing that doesn't apply to his boxing, actually, but he was a good boxer nonetheless compared to his rivals of the day. He trained with Mexican light-weights who would train to "sit into" their punches to add more power which is something most heavy weights don't do, and Tank mentioned that as one of the key bits of his early training that would eventually lead to his scary punching power. There is a thread on Sherdog with a guy who was at a gym where Tank sometimes trained and he said that him and the other guys noticed that whenever Tank hit the heavy bag the echo made the gym rumble a little bit, which they found funny and scary at the same time.

I've heard of his bar fights, had to be careful what you said to him in those times.
Tank will always be a fan favorite, myself included. Once, when asked who was the hardest hitter he ever faced, he said he had been hit harder by a woman than any man in the octogon. You gotta love that guy.
Man, wtf ISNT prohibited in todays UFC?? THIS is the ufc that I used to watch and enjoy
NO DULL MOMENT WATCHING TANK ABBOTT'S FIGHT.
so hardcore the clock went up those days...
Fun to watch, and a truly mean man in the ring. I loved that he always lost…the arch villain falling to the ground”heroes” at the end. Underrated wrestler too.

@@angelmanfredy I mean, he was robbed from a few by injury. At least you aren't saying something stupid like someone in another thread saying the Hall of Fame is only for Champions. Like bruh, there is a hall in the hall of fame just for Champions, but the hall of fame is for anyone who brought fame to their sport due to their actions. Tank Abbott, was the fame that brought A LOT of people to the UFC simply for being the Every Man fighter instead of the totally yoked up guys who talked crap about anyone who didn't look like AwwNold. "Get me a Chalupa" I Mean "Get to the Choppah" That sign saying "Tank Is the UFC" was a true statement. Only... We weren't like you back then, rooting for "the good guy". Tank wasn't the bad guy. He fought by the rules. People just judge him now based on the current rules, which is stupid AF. But tank was not the villain. He was the hero.
Tank didn't win all the time, but he was still my favorite fighters.
What MMA was like at the time? Tank Abbot came along WAY after the pussification of UFC. The first couple were bare knuckled, almost no rules, blood soaked, fights. I am surprised someone wasn't killed.
You didn’t mention taktarov 9 second win was a fix. His opponent laid down for taktarov because they were training partners
Don the predator Frye. F around and find out.
Thank you 🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍
The dude is a badass threw and threw,a true warrior with giant heart, and true dog in the pit
Tank Abbott was one of the toughest MMA fighters you may remember

That's the first time I've seen someone signal to the Ref that they "didn't want to continue" probably a wise decision.
Great Video. Well done
Why does the narrator keep saving against the "ropes?" It's a fence?
The early days it was a "BLOOD SPORT" and TANK was game
Just imagine if he actually trained at a gym and great cardio.
Tank was definitely a powerhouse and he could deal a lot of damage quickly. Not unlike an actual tank, he did tire fast though...but his initial charges were simply explosive.
They were gladiators, still are.
That man can fight
The fact that Tank never got a win in any of the tourneys sucks. Dude was in the finals like 3-4 times and always came up just short.
UFC 6 still makes me laugh because they kept talking about how tired Tank was and he popped up after tapping andbwalked oit while his opponent had to get oxygen and laid there for like 5 minutes.
5:00 - Meanwhile, Oleg Taktarov fights an alternate that takes a very obvious dive as he was a member of Olegs team. Tank will fight in the finals having faced two opponents while Taktarov only had to fight one...
Abbott always one my favorites he showed how to brag talk crap laugh when he really hurt someone he didn't make fun of people lead up to fight he didn't need to because he made fun of them in ring
The great thing with having some talent and an unpredictable unconventional style, in any sport, is that you can shine. The unfortunate thing with unconventional styles is that it doesn’t take long to figure you out and after that, unless you can change, you become predictable and beatable.
You have to remember that UFC 6 was in thin air. I think Denver
OMG juiced Vitor!
He's on pretty shaky legs these days, almost died a couple times, doubt you'll see any more interviews with him beyond the ones he did with Hannibal and Dan Severn
Tank and Matua went to high schools 5 miles from each other....Matua didn't train in the ancient art of bone breaking lol he was just a big Samoan from OC....I went to HS with Dave at Marina and he was the baddest dude on any block and I so much wish UFC was around for him to start at 22 and not jump into at 29 after he gave up boxing
Tough dude! I remember when he fought a young Vitor Belfort, and thinking that Tank would make quick work of him, yet Belfort beat his ass, lol.
Anyone see that FishHook Tank used on Oleg????? You never even seen those back in the day
14:19 that was fast for a big dude

I never noticed that before. Now it will be hard to unsee. Lol.
I couldn't stand Tank Abbott just for the fact he acted like no one could beat him and man, did I love seeing him get beat. He didn't smirk so much then.
In his prime Vitor was really a phenom.
If you have to have an oxygen mask and your opponent that tapped walks out on his own accord that in my opinion is a winner
Nice to see how he got beat up from Kimbo
Tank liked his beer more than he liked his training. In order to prolong his career, he needed to lose 40 lb and work hard on his cardio. If he couldn't finish a fight in the first couple minutes, he was gassed. He never trained to improve his defense, he didn't know how to pace himself when needed, and he replied too much on his formidable power. In his defense, though, MMA was at its infancy, and most fighters like Tank were not well rounded. But he was an important part of the beginning of the beginnings of the UFC.
I forgot about the beating Severn put on Abbot.
MMA's first real Bad @$$...
Vitor was the man till his sister got kidnapped and killed to me he's still the man I always loved to watch him fight
Slice is dead correct ?
He was ahead of the time wearing mma gloves
Pressure points
He was a sore loser with Don Fry. I had a friend that used to call him stank rabbit.😂😂😂
I would love to see a video about Cătălin Moroșanu here , if there isn’t one already??!😅🙊🤷🏻♂️

3:45 lmao hahahahhahah
You think fighters are paid bad today?! I bet tank made $1,400 and a stake and shake gift card for all his time fighting. Sponcers are probably how they make decent money
Sad part is he was probably only making like 5 or 10k a match lol
The one matchup that never happened, but should have, was Tank vs. Ken Shamrock. Ken was for it, Tank was not.
Tough times and tough fighters.🫡💪🏻
great, but title is off.
There's no ropes in a cage, just saying. There is however canvas. Please take note that this is mma in a cage and not boxing in a ring with ropes.
Olek: was one of my trainers when I learned Krav Maga! Oled is a great teacher & love the USA!!
You need to learn the difference between ropes and a cage.
Jorge "Misvidal"? C'mon man
When the computer voice butchered pronouncing the names at the beginning of the video I turned it off. Find someone to narrate if your own voice is that bad.
Can’t finish the video because of the ai voiceover
7:38 the judge pulled them to their feet. That’s a ref not a judge do you even watch mma
You that wasnt old enough to watch these fights live, i felt bad for you. This was true kumitae and brutal fashion.
This guy really mispronounced masvidal last name
Tank can absorb punches that would stop a dump truck. Not a better chin in the history off mma
These AI voices can't pronounce Masvidal... lol
Thes AI voice videos are kinda stupid. Jorge "Misvidal". WTF?
MIZvidal?? Jesus dude could do a little research if you’re making videos
I GREW UP WITH A GUY JUST LIKE TANK.
Yo does the person writing the ai script not speak English? Shit is just dumb sometimes
No, he got beat by a few technical fighters.. But it took nearly a decade for the levels of MMA to be able to show Tank the door.. Frank Shamrock was probably the first to even level up as Pat Miletich was teaching wrestlers how to take over MMA
He performed a ground and pound. Man, this commentary absolutely sucks, sounds like it's his first time talking about MMA.
Tank sucked…beat crappy fighters. I remember when he got beat like a rag doll by Victor Belfort.

Nah, he was big, strong, had good wrestling, heavy hands and decent boxing for 1995. His first 2 opponents were much larger than he was. You're trying to use 2024 MMA analysis for the beginning of the sport, which is fallacious, biased and just dumb.
