Dude a broken jaw hurts so bad. I can't imagine getting punched in it. And by Tyson for Lord's sake I had a basketball hit my broken jaw after a boxing match that went bad... But we had a really important game so I didn't really say anything. (Pun intended).. But the ball hit me not even that hard and I literally just collapsed in the high school gymnasium in front of nearly 1,000 people crying like a bitch. Had my first boxer's fracture when I was in 8th grade, (that's the technical name for a particular break in the arm and wrist) i had all kinds of broken bones and that jaw is some painful shit. Not kidney stone painful... But it's up there with orbital socket or collarbone

I never could, and I never will understand how Tyson could take those shots from Ruddock without even taking a knee. Inhuman resistance.

If you ask me Ruddock was the best. But he never recovered from that second fight with Tyson. In a lot of ways neither did Tyson. These guys threw massive f-ing bombs round after round. Tyson said Rudduck broke his rib in the second fight, not from hitting his rib, but from hitting his jaw.

100% agree with Mike, it wasn't his call to make. Watching that replay I also agree with the ref. He was unable to defend himself and had he not stepped in... Well it looked like Mike would have had a very clean shot to the head. That stoppage might have prevented a concussion.

And of course he had an amazing coach. One thing that made him so dangerous, was the fact that he watched all the best fights in history. And took all the best styles and made his own. He was a true martial artist.

Their point was that ‘the defense mechanism was an adaptation at that time.’ Of course now we judge the man for his impulsitivity, and he seems to know he has behavior problems, plans to be in therapy for it etc, but I get what OP was saying: his defense mechanisms were needed , while most others aren’t born in lethal ghettos, they live well but develop defense mechanisms out of insecurity or fear of feelings

Except that statement is more like a declaration of a killer mindset. As far as I know he didn’t kill anyone despite saying this often apparently. Its not tough talk or fare banter. Contrary to the public perception, Tyson seemed to be a very considerate boxer who was respectful to the opponents. He was destroyed by some greedy corrupt promoters like Don King...Had he remained with Kevin Rooney as his coachhe would've remained invincible for 2 or 3 decades.....🙏🙏

I forgot what interview it was, might have been with Joe Rogan, where he said something like Cus taught him to go berserk mode. It was like a switch he would flip before a fight where his only concern was winning the fight. Like a violent trance. Tragically, he said the Cus died before he could teach him how to turn it off on his own. He said that might have contributed to him getting into so much trouble.

So true. My dad and grandpa were so into boxing that we got cable so we could see the under fights in 84. It wasn't much longer that Tyson was on ESPN seemingly twice a month. Every time we saw him he looked scarier but he would always show respect to the opponent and the ref.

If Tyson compliments you that basically means you're a killer. His punching power was off the charts.

Ruddock was on of the kindest gentleman I ever met. I was in high school and I boxed at Golden Gloves gym in Las Vegas, NV. I arrive at school one day and recognize a team of men on the track and football field. One was Ruddock's manager who's name I fail to recall. Ruddock was suppose to show for wind sprints and other running. His manager and team talked to me for 20 minutes about boxing and my love for the sport. He told me to be there same time the next day to meet Ruddock because now they knew he was not coming. The next day I was there and Ruddock no shows again and I go to class but not before Ruddock's manager got my name before I left. 30 minutes later the Principal comes to my first period class and asks for me. He walks me to the football field where I met Mr. Ruddock and his team. They sent for me. Amazing day. For 30 minutes he talked to me about his game plan to fight Mike. He gave me a Leather Coat that had his image in colorful leather throwing the smash punch that said Team Ruddock across the rear shoulder area. He then had me out to his sparring sessions to watch him train. This was a Large powerful man. Tyson was my size and Ruddock dwarfed me. I was lucky enough to have tickets to their rematch. Anyways, that is what happened and how I met Ruddock. Good guy.

I'm a diehard Tyson fan, but man do I have respect for Razor .....and the sportsmanship between them both at the end of the 2nd fight was uncanny. Never knew that Ruddock beat Lewis and Lewis beat the sh*t out of Tyson essentially ending his career, so someone can always figure out an opponent someone else couldn't. I miss those days of heavy-weight fighting.

Tyson for the brute he was, he had impressive defensive skills too. Extremely fun to watch his whack-a-mole technique where he was just crouching and popping up. But you knew that if he hit you with a left hook or uppercut when he was coming up from this crouch, it's "nite-nite". Mad respect for the fighters who stepped in the ring with him and took multiple of those punches in th chin without going to another dimension.

@@BigKeithDog I agree. I think the boxer was done. It's the ref's job to stop a fight when someone is on the verge of being severely hurt or killed. It's always a disappointment when a fight is stopped, but it beats seeing a guy having his career ended or someone lying dead on the mat. It looked like the right call to me.

I think these two genuinely enjoyed fighting eachother for sport as they saw an equal challenge, what a great fight from two incredible athletes. Actually two great fights!

And it's a shame. I guess when you fight the best and you lose, it's like climbing the highest mountain. After that, there's really nothing left to do. So you kinda lose motivation because you know your limit and know you'll get passed that to achieve your goal. He wanted the title, Tyson was in the way and he knew could never beat him.

Respect to Ruddock for hanging in like that with a broken jaw, you could clearly see it in the post fight interview, he could barely talk, that’s a lot of heart right there!

Mike gets a reputation for being a little fire ball of disrespect, attitude, and swagger... but people forget how much of that is an act or a psychological tool against his opponent, because you'll notice as soon as the fight was over Mike had nothing but positive things to say about the man he had just traded shots with for rounds and rounds of combat. "Punches like a fuckin' mule kick! Excuse my french, but oh my god" You know if Tyson is saying that, he means it.

@@The_13th_Hussar I think that loss, along with other things changed the way Mike treated opponents and other people...before that loss he almost never threatened to eat someone's children.

Tyson didn’t just end hopes and dreams with one punch, he ended self esteem, confidence, understanding, brain cell regeneration, post nasal drip, eye sight function, sense of smell and taste, mobility, ability to function in society, and a lot more. He was not normal.

I cannot imagine getting your jaw broken from a punch, and the pain that must entail, but the fact that he managed to keep fighting 9 ROUNDS, whilst continually being hit with a broken jaw is beyond me. He must've been in excruciating pain constantly. I have nothing but respect to all boxers, because only one of the punches they take and give 100s of times during a fight would be enough to break my ribcage and fracture my skull.

Stronk Tomato I agree. However a shorter fighter is at an advantage and disadvantage when they close the distance. Even though they can fight on the inside the opponent can try and put their body weight on them. Take Tyson Fury for example. In his second fight with deontay wilder he took every chance he got to put his weight on him.

There are three types of boxer, the fighter, the boxer and the showman, the Fighters were people like Mike Tyson and Razor Ruddock, they relied on power more than anything else The Boxers were people like Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield, they were the finesse experts, they had the power but they wore their opponents down with perfect boxing first. Yeah it definitely was just a hairline fracture. When my buddy got blind sided by a 300 lb samoin and broke his jaw in two it was hanging there with blood pouring out and he couldn't pronounce anything and had to have it wired shut for weeks. Just saying...its a little different

Mike acting like he isn't one to question a ref's decision and it should be respected shouldn't stand out as some gracious sportsmanlike attitude, but primarily because it was a decision that gave him the win. He almost certainly would have still won, but in any case, the ref still ended it just a little early.
