Choosing the Right Picture Profile

Фильм және анимация

What the heck is a Picture Profile? Also, can I say the word "profile" a few more times?! Today we learn the difference between a handful of Sony profiles, and why you might want to use one over another.
This can be a confusing topic, so if you still have questions, feel free to leave a comment or connect with us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. If you like the videos, do us a favor and subscribe!

    Thanks! I just used the Godox SL60W and a 36" softbox as my key light and I placed a cheap RGB bulb with a sheet of paper wrapped around it above me as a hair light. I can control the RGB bulb with an app on my phone and the paper is just meant to keep the light from spreading. Thanks for watching!

    you know whats so amazing is that this topic I believe is so over looked and not talked about enough thanks for this! Because picture profile matters just as much as aperture iso white balance and shutter speed there’s not enough videos about this at all I literally just discover natural profile in my GH4 its looks!! Amazing!!!

    Literally the best video on this topic I found. I mean I knew the basics and why I did not trust the guy that said "just use creative profiles so you don't need to edit that much" - but to hear it in that professional way gives me some kind of right direction to do further research. Thanks!

    Slog3 is not recommended for 8bit cameras as it uses just a fraction of the available data levels. Use slog2 instead which can use the full data levels to avoid banding. But even then banding can become visible which leads us to just use hlg. Gerald undone hat an amazing video about dynamic range differences between all profiles. Hlg3 is the best overall profile on 8bit cameras. On my fs5 i use slog2 in 10bit which is then even better...

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the detailed response! I avoid Slog3 as often as possible, I typically stick to Cine4 but you're right, whichever profile you use on an 8bit camera it's likely to be too much strain on the data and you'll get artifacts and banding. The bane of my existence. I actually recently got my hands on two BMPCC 4Ks and shoot BRAW and I'm loving it. Plan on posting some videos about it in 2020. Thanks for watching Chris!

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much! Glad the video was helpful. For us, filming in low light depends on the goal. Do we need to brighten everything up so it's clear and visible? In that case I might use Slog-2 or Slog-3 to keep as much dynamic range as possible. But if the shadows are meant to be dark, I stick with Cine4 because I don't need to retain that detail and that way I can keep the image a bit cleaner.

    Thanks Edward! I'm awful at getting things right in-camera. I've got friends like the awesome Dan Ludeman (Ludeman Productions on KZread) who absolutely nails exposure in camera, because he exposes to the right. That helps avoid noise. But I always worry about over-exposing, so I stay right in the middle but it definitely produces more noise. Keep practicing though. The more I use the a7SII, the better I get!

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    Thanks Ryan! For these tests I reset all of the picture profiles to default, but typically we go with the S-Gamut or S-Gamut3.cine because they have a pretty wide range of colors and don't have much of a weird color shift, so we don't have to do TOO much tweaking to things like skin tones. Sony doesn't have the greatest color science so we always have to do *some* tweaking to get somewhat natural colors.

    Wow thanks so much! The best tips I can give are 1) depth behind the subject allows you to blur the background more. 2) Use a BIG soft light source. If your lights are small, shoot them through a bed sheet or shower curtain. That will give you soft, natural light. 3) Keep the microphone as close as you can without dipping into the frame to get cleaner audio. 4) Make sure the exposure is correct in-camera, and then color grade to preference. I make all my normal corrections (increasing saturation and contrast) and then I add a free Lutify.me LUT "Heulandite" at about 50% power. That's about it. Good luck!

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching, I'm glad you liked the video! Unfortunately I've also found that videos shot in Slog can have really noisy shadows. That's why I tend to shoot in Cine4 instead. There are a few things you can do to remove noise. After Effects has a built-in "remove grain" plugin and it works pretty well but it takes a while to render. There's a fantastic paid plugin called NeatVideo that works wonders in After Effects and Premiere, and it's only $75. You can also lean into the grain and cover it up by adding more grain. Downloading a free 4K film grain overlay and then setting the blend mode to Multiply or Overlay and adjusting the opacity can help cover up the bad grain with good grain. Hope that helps a little.

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey thanks for watching! I don't think one profile is necessarily better than the other, they just have different uses. So if you're shooting a dance / music video under controlled lighting and don't need to do much color grading, a standard profile like Movie or Natural might be perfect. But if you're in low-light or out shooting on a ridiculously bright and sunny day, you might want to try Cine4 or Slog to preserve details in your highlights and shadows, just be aware that you'll need to spend a bit more time color grading. I never got a chance to try HLG so I can't make any recommendations about that.

    Thank you! I guess it depends on the subject of the shot, but I generally expose more for the sky because I don't mind darker shadows, but if the sky is blown out then the image will look much more amateur. Of course if the subject is in a shaded area then I'll need to expose for that, or try to split the difference. You can raise shadows but can't bring back an over exposed sky.

  • @AppleboxCinema

    The picture profile you choose for night video depends on how much detail you WANT to retain in the shadows. I've found that Cine4 works just fine on the a7Sii because in most of the footage, I actually want the shadows to be really dark. But occasionally if I'm in a situation with bad lighting and don't want everything to be dark, I'll go with an SLog profile to help maintain some details.

    It's been a while since I made this video (since then I've switched to the Blackmagic and shoot RAW) but I seem to remember Cine4 being flat *enough* and not needing a TON of correction. And since it's an 8-bit camera, color grading didn't create a lot of other issues. But you're right, I think Cine2 might have been more flat.

I upgraded from the a7S II to the BMPCC 4K last year and sold my Sony, so I actually never got a chance to shoot with the HLG profile. And I also never used the Sony as a stills camera, so I'm completely useless here. I occasionally shoot stills on my Canon T7i which is a fairly decent entry-level camera, and I just shoot RAW using the Standard profile and Lightroom usually gives me enough latitude to adjust my exposure as needed. Maybe you can help me. Like they say always ask the expert. I have an A6600. I purchased some coloured lights for the background and I use one key light for now. I notice a strange thing happened during filming the video. I notice after when I am editing and I see the video. I see that the video started out as a somewhat dark video image ( which I like) - like most vlogs. Then it starts to brighten itself as the clip goes on. The camera seems to some how change something in adjustment during filming.Im not sure if I have to turn some setting off or adjust other settings?

  • @AppleboxCinema

    I'm not familiar with the A6600 but maybe the camera was set to Auto Exposure and that's why it was changing by itself. You'll want to make sure it's set to manual control so you choose all of the settings yourself.

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    4 жыл бұрын

    Great question. A good LUT will have two options to choose from. One for Log footage, and another for Rec709 footage. I'll often color by eye to get my flat footage pretty close to Rec709 and then apply the Rec709 version of a LUT and adjust the strength to taste. So the short answer is that a LUT meant for Log footage probably won't work exactly the same way with another profile.

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    For a driving scene you'll probably want to use a more neutral or flat profile because the car might be going in and out of shadows which will change the exposure. The flatter profiles will give you more dynamic range in case the car goes into bright sunlight or darker shaded areas.

    Why the pictures with picture profile SLOG3 had the ISO pumped up to 1600? Was this done by you or is it the set up of the picture profile that does it automatically?

  • @AppleboxCinema

    @AppleboxCinema

    4 жыл бұрын

    One of the limitations with SLOG3 is that the ISO doesn't go below 1600. That's built-into the camera unfortunately. One option would be to use an ND filter on your lens so that you can bring the exposure down without having to close your aperture too small.

    It's been a while since I made this video so I don't really remember, but I know that some of the camera settings change depending on the profile you're using. For example, if my memory is correct, Slog doesn't let you shoot below ISO 1600, so I had to make adjustments to the f-stop and ND to get a similar exposure.
