Sony needs to consider this guy in the ranks and give him free gear. He is doing God's work on this particular camera. Really good for beginners. Understanding the camera as a whole. Imagine if each camera in the world had this level of commitment and guides. Insane!

Awesome video once again man...showing how the PP's actually look was a brilliant move....will be of great help for beginners. I think PP4 gives the most natural skin tone and kinda removes the notorious green tint that Sony mirrorless cameras are infamous for.

@@pawelf4456 both with and without...idk maybe its only me...i feel PP3 has that slight green tint...

I used to shoot in Portrait on my a5100 to mimic that cinematic look. Results were quite decent. It's much better than shooting on Standard imo. Now, on the ZV-E10 I'm shooting in Cine4 and have been pretty happy with the results. As you said, don't shoot in S-Log on 8-bit cameras. The Cine profiles are quite a good middle ground I think :) Great video, buddy!

good video. i realized i was spending too much time in color grading and people were only interested in the story. so i always try to stay away from color grading. at most i just edit videos together and be done. at best i record and upload no editing software needed.

Thanks!! I would probably just do picture profile off. it looks good straight out of camera and does a good job with capturing things accurately.

This was super helpful! Question- on my ZVE-10, quite literally every picture profile except desaturated SLOG ones like PP7, I have to turn down saturation to like -13 because the skintones are SO overly saturated, basically bright orange. Is there some setting for this I might have wrong?

the 10-18 is a higher quality lens. the only reason to use the 16-50 is if you need a longer reach than 18 and also, you will get slightly more background blur on the 16-50 at its widest (at 16mm it’s a f3.5 aperture). but the difference between f3.5 and f4 is not much. I’m doing a review of the 10-18 on Monday. 👍👍

a6100 has the same sensor - so it’s still great. Plus that viewfinder!! You just have less room for grading. But you don’t always need that 👍👍

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis well, I have never used the viewfinder😅. But I color grade every footage I shoot, even those shot with standard profile. So for my use case, the new cam fits better.....but let's see what the future holds...😀

Thanks - I appreciate the thought - but even if you have a link like genius link that is universal, you still need to have an affiliate status in each country where people are shopping from. Hi. Thanks for the video I really enjoy watching them. Quick question though. I'm not sure if my camera is the problem but I have the ZV-e10 and whenever I change the picture profiles, the colors of the pictures that I have previously taken also change. Is this normal? or is it a setting problem? Help please :((

That was some really useful information. Especially which PPP to use and how to color correct with a lot (instead of fighting with the color daemons…). Would that process correct the colors so easily if the footage was shot outdoors? (Since sun and clouds are messing things up)

It will work perfectly as long as you don't leave it on auto white balance. If you're outside, choose daylight (or cloudy if it's cloudy) and you'll be fine

Thanks. For me - HLG3 with BT2020 (I assign it to PP10) and the LeemingLUT. THEN I add style LUTS. The LeemingLUT is just to get the image technically accurate. After that, feel free to grade however you want or out whatever creative LUT you want. But you can try PPOFF and try the teal and orange. That might work too because teal and orange kind of covers up everything.

Thank for your tips. As your suggestion, should we use P5 or P6 for coloring videos (exp: Kids videos)? Are there some settings for it? One more thing, your style is very interesting with beer cup in hands! :)))). Thanks for giving me a clear lession

I would leave the settings alone. That usually leads to bad results 🤣 just pic the one you like and grade in post.

best thing to do for a beginner is PPOFF. the colours will be good without needing to apply a LUT.

Hi Mark. Thanks so much for your informative videos. I have a quick question. Whenever I use HLG3 picture profile on my Sony ZV E10 I get double screen/ split screen footage. It looks fine on the camera monitoring but when I put it in my video editor the footage is split in two halfs. Asif the screen is cut half vertically in the middle and I have two images on either side ( kinda what raw 3D footage looks like ) I've changed the settings from 1080 to 4k but I still get this double image footage. Any advice? Thanks so much

Sounds like a setting in your editor - look for the HDR settings and see if you can change it.

Awesome video. I'm wondering what profile (or none at all and other settings) you'd recommend for stratight-out-the-camera? I don't have time/experience (yet) to do color grading, and I don't think my viewers would even notice. My main issue is that we film in our working garage/shop. So lighting isn't great (LED overhead replacement tubes), and so far I haven't found a setting that gives good results.

Did you try 1.4 with 50 shutter @ 25fps. Dynamic Range set to Auto & Profile Colour Off. Profile 10 would be better but you need to adjust contrast and saturation etc after.

the pp doesn’t matter - you can program all 10 to be exactly the same. the key is to have HLG3 with Bt. 2020

I would shoot with picture profile off - that puts the camera in Sonys standard colors which look really nice. The only other option I would really consider is pp10 hlg3, but you need to apply a correction LUT for this (or do it manually which is a pain).

I had a confusion of going for a zv-e10 or not. After this video I got an great idea of the camera profiles. Can I please know the lens you've in the test video. Thanks xx

The image quality would be great - it would compare very well. Just manually focus and you’re good to go.

I would still use the ZV-E10 and the 16mm 1.4 for wide shots and the Sigma 30mm 1.4 for higher shots. Stick with the PPOFF for a while and experiment with other profiles later

I edit using Apple iMovie, so I don't think there is much color grading available. What profile would you suggest I use; especially for studio talking head videos? Also, what does one use with the color checker you were holding up?

if you are using sunlight from a window, you’ll have good results with PPOFF or Portrait. if you are using studio lights, I would look at PP3 or Portrait. but experiment until you find a look you light. the XRite Color Checker is to help you get your exposure and colours accurate. you use it in combination with color grading tools in editing.

Do you have a lut for the pp8 and pp9 profile? For reference right around @5:15 in vid. I like a cinema or warm look. Thanks

I'm planning to get this camera soon but with the kit lens for now. What picture profile would suit places like Disneyland outdoor and indoor inside the attraction waiting areas which are generally dark.

Stick with PPOFF for now. A good lens for what you're describing is the very affordable Sigma 30mm 1.4 - will be amazing in the dark geni.us/sigm30mm

This is helpful. But I wonder if after all you just use the creative style Portrait or Natural, turn down saturation, contrast and sharpening, won’t it be good compared to a PP6 cinema 2 profile? HLG involves applying luts or other settings to each clip. It would have been good seeing the cinema and hlg ungraded clips next to the portrait creative style one.

Ungraded HLG is not the right colour space bt.2020 has to be conformed to Rec.709. So a side-by-side with a standard colour profile like cinema wouldn’t tell you anything

Will do - however, I will tell you now that it can operate like any other camera with a capture card, BUT the ZV-E10 has an added feature - USB-C streaming. It’s 720, but that’s more than enough sometimes for streaming and webcam. Press “enable USB-C streaming”, plug in your USB-C cord and you can use it as a webcam or go into something like OBS with nothing extra needed. Great option when you don’t need the higher resolutions

For studio and low light/night scenes I use HLG3 and for outside daylight and for "film" look I use SLog3 with cinema color. Even just converting it to rec709 in davinci resolve gives much nicer image than hlg and non pp

Can i use hlg3 without any post production or color grading in the video like direct out of the camera? Also plz suggest me the best mode or profile for direct straight out of the camera without any single editing or color grading? Coz i dont do color grading and editing also

Just checking- is the shirt you are wearing in the test shots with the picture profiles (outdoors and indoors) the same one as your black shirt in your regular graded shots (i.e. your shirt in 7:18 appears like a grey heathered shirt vs 7:24 looking black in the video)? Thanks for making these videos! Also you have a free LUT in the description - is this your own LUT that you've been putting on top of your leeming LUT?

Hi Mark, you magnificent piece of a man. I just got a ZV-E10 thanks to your advice and I have a quick question. perhaps you or anyone reading this could help me: I followed you advice and switched from s log to HLG3 BT2020 And the colors looked amazing after color graded. However, when I try to export on Premiere Pro, the software only allows me to export in Rec 709, which completely messes my colors up (perhaps because I recorded in BT2020?). Thing is the color option is greyed out during export. I've always exported my videos in h.264 for youtube because of the good file size. Is this format not compatible with BT2020? Should I export in another format or is there a way to switch the color profile before exporting without messing the colors up? Thanks in advance!

I don’t use premiere, but unless you are delivering in HDR, you will be converting to Rec.709. This is why I apply a corrective / Transform LUT before I colour grade. You can probably change the color space to rec709 yourself before you edit and that way, no surprises when you export

Question from a rank beginner - can I shoot a talking head video in PP10 with HLG2 and and Color Mode 709 and use that footage straight out of camera without any post production color grading or correction or applying any LUTS?

Yes - some people do that - that way you won’t have to convert the bt.2020 in post to rec709

The mount is Emount - so all Sony full frame and apsc glass for emount will fit. A speed booster will still have a crop if you turn stabilization - my suggestion is that if you want to use the electronic stabilization - get a wider Emount lens like the 10-18 f4 from Sony.

Mark, what is a run and gun PP as I am planning to vlog morning to evening in so many evvironments.Pretty much moving between indoors, outdoors, sports, cars, shops, etc. Perhaps PP Off?:)

Hello, I shoot at SLog3 but unfortunately it does not work if ISO is lower than 600, I would like to ask for shooting night video in my F1.4 lens, how can i shoot? Can i use HLG?

Hey Mark, I just got the ZV-E10 with the included lens kit. I would like to upgrade to a better lens to something under $1200. What would you recommend me to get? Most of my videos will be in a studio setup similar to yours and going for a look just like your videos.

@@jessesanchez5294 if you have a set up like mine - you’ll need a 35mm full frame field of view - so you need a 24mm on the ZV-E10. (24. X 1.5 crop factor =. 36mm). So look at the Sony 24 1.8. Set the aperture to 2.8 or 4 for your sharpest possible image. Thank you so much, I just looked at some footage with this lens and it looks amazing. The price is great too!

I did some play around with the profiles and Leeming LUTs. Wonder how they are correctly used when using HDMI output for live streaming. I assume that no regular logs will make it through due to HDMI 2.0 limitations (couldn’t find out if the cam can do HDMI 2.0b and proper chroma subsampling; same for Elgato Cam Link 4K which I use). As HLG are hybrid and were actually developed for backwards compatibility, I guess the information just walks through and if software can interpret it correctly, it should work to apply the HLG3 Leeming LUT as well. However, I saw that images are really dark and even though you told that higher illumination would be required, I think that actual sunny daylight right next to a window should be sufficient for a confirmation. Had no luck here :-( That being said, I figured that using the PP1 setting with Cine2 as explained in the Leeming LUT setup guide would do pretty fine. Still wonder if I could get more dynamic range in another way as it actually could be very useful in my live streaming use case. Apropos dynamic range, the Sony function is supposed to be off so I guess that’s what the LUTs compensate anyway if I put them into OBS?

Have you had any luck with your steaming setup? I am hoping to use OBS but apparently this does not support HDR. So wondering what picture profile or settings will "pass through" to it via HDMI and my Elgato 4k capture? Don't have this camera yet, but hoping to use HLG, e.g. PP10.

Thank you. I have Canon M50 and I think about using Sony zve 10 as another camera. Since it has 4k it will be my A- cam and M50 will be my B-cam. The question is. How easy I can match their colour? Or perhaps I should buy another canon as it would be easier. Problem is canon doesn't have 4k camera in budget price. Any suggestion?

So after you apply the leeming lut do you do anything else? I just edited my first video on Final Cut Pro and I got my ZVE10 settings set like yours with picture profile 10 and HLG3

yes there appears to be a strange thing with Sony and the weebil s. Try this: if you change the gimbal setting to "Canon," you can control shutter speed, aperture, and ISO in addition to shutter release. Note that this requires you to set the camera USB setting to "PC remote. Some people have had success choosing the Panasonic option as well

please tell me if you know each other. What is the difference, if any, in video capture if the switch is photo mode or video mode? Personally, I see that the same thing is being filmed in both ways.

If you press record while in photo mode, it will shoot video, but will default to the standard picture profile (PPOFF) if that's what you have set in photos. It will also be in the shoot mode you set in photo (A, S, P, M, iA). You can set basic video functions while in photo mode if you want to quickly grab clips in video while remaining in photo mode
