The greatest content of intermediate chinese on youtube ever. Not only wide variety of vocabulary but also how the words are used in contexts. Tons of treasure buried here.

These are really good for someone who isn’t in a Chinese speaking country and needs exposure to the language. Also, it’s nice that I can follow the gist of most of the spoken Mandarin but have subtitles as a referenceThanks!

These podcasts are the best thing out there. I pretty much only study those these days, listening to each interview so many times that I start to memorize part of it. It’s made my Chinese a lot more fluent. Also, Eileen, I love that you aren’t the typical, filter-loving Chinese KZreadr but instead have so many interesting experiences to share from your life in the country side, as a factory worker etc. I’m always happy to see your face and hear you talk.

I am thankful I have had the opportunity to travel throughout much of China, so I can share some other cultural and societal differences I found interesting. I should note that China is a beautiful country with a range of natural landscapes, modern cities, and history. 我先说谢谢Eileen 和yifei. 你们说很多有意思的东西。这个视频很好用 To preface, I should note that both the US and China have a huge variety of cultures and geography, so it is challenging to make general statements that are representative of the whole population. Some things are only true for certain groups within each country, and others are based solely on my personal experience (a data point of one:( ). China is largely a collectivist culture while the US is largely an individualistic culture. This has wide ranging effects on all aspects of society from sharing meals to singular versus groups of heroes in movies. China has a much greater population density and suburbs are largely nonexistent which completely changes the cost-benefit analysis of public services and infrastructure. China has a long history of authoritarian governments and social hierarchy based on Confucius teachings which makes Chinese far more willing to accept policies from the federal government and show deference to their elders. As for my personal experiences: Social relationships: - Vast majority of Chinese were welcoming to foreigners, from villagers on a pilgrimage to the great wall, to university professors. - Challenging for foreigners to make close friendships with Chinese - Many Chinese will stare at foreigners - Significant pressure to drink alcohol at social gatherings - Generally curious about foreigners and foreign countries - Dating gets more serious more quickly Crime and safety: - nobody knows the true crime rates in China and the official statistics are likely underreported and maybe drastically underreported. That said based on personal experience the violent crime rate appeared to be lower than the US - like in most countries, foreigners are prime targets for pickpockets. - roads are far less safe than in most western countries -black (illegal) taxis will target foreigners Politics and freedom: - Chinese are surprisingly open to discussing politics, but only in private settings - world wide web is only accessible through a VPN, which is technically illegal and will lose service during sensitive periods - no monolith of political opinion - lax enforcement of many laws and unclear understanding of the law. Though this is changing in recent years Infrastructure: - Very advanced travel infrastructure - Excellent airports, the most impressive high-speed rail system in the world, excellent subway systems, wide range of low cost (though sometimes dangerous) bus networks, extensive taxi services - Sewer systems and toilets are inconsistent - Water quality is generally lower than western countries

Hey love your videos! noticed an error, i thought you might like to know if you are seeing this. You referred to drinking water from the faucet as "tab" water but its actually called "tap" water with a p not a b. Take care!

Great video - I teach at a university in Zhengzhou, China, and if it were in English it would be incredibly useful for my English class. I have been here over four years. Yes, in America is customary to have a dryer and also an oven in the home. Also, a big difference is sit down toilets. At my university they don't exist (you squat). Chinese people don't have dishwashers I think mainly. Living expenses like food and housing is cheaper here. Taxis are really cheap. Population density is much higher - most Americans live in the suburbs and drive cars everywhere. Americans have the concept of "personal space". As for tipping, Americans know that we don't have to tip in China (and some other countries). But often taking a taxi I'll just say "keep the change" and they seem to understand.

In Asia, the service is usually good, swift. It’s unrelated to the tip.

I was born and raised in the USA, but I honestly do not understand the cold water thing either. If I drink water that hasn't been heated, it makes my body so cold. When I go to a restaurant, the waitresses always look at me like I'm crazy when I order hot water. I can understand drinking it when you are really hot and need to bring down your body temperature, but otherwise... gross. lol

Loved it! I'm Brazilian and, obviously, I already knew some of the points discussed in this video, but there were many I wasn't aware of! Besides, it was super fun comparing my own culture to the other two included here. There are points in which Brazilians are more similar to Americans (race diversity, more casual clothing) and others in which we are more similar to Chinese people (not using dryers, throwing toilet paper in a wastebasket), so it was a very cool and informative video. Thanks a lot~

So impressed with these young ladies…then again, I don’t believe I’ve ever known a single person from China who didn’t impress me-and I have gotten to know MANY in the past 12 years that my precious, late Son introduced me to. (My son spent 12 years living, working and traveling through China because of good friends he made in his University-he was a Student Ambassador and Counselor to students from China. Unfortunately, just before he was to return to your beautiful country last year; my Son didn’t wake up one morning. He had a stroke, a blood clot, as he slept. I remain in touch with his friends-who are always checking in on me 🥰, and I’m still working on the language, Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy 😁) One more comment-I am in a small town in Pennsylvania and I wouldn’t dare drink our tap water! MANY US Water systems have become unsafe in recent years. In fact, in over 60 years of living in different states and traveling around the world, the only 2 places I drank water from a tap or allowed my children to was on our farm in North Florida and had had a very deep well put in. I tested the water myself as I worked in a lab at FSU where I was in Pre-Med. It was absolutely the best water I’ve ever had. Then, in my residency in Northern Alabama, my husband at the time had health issues and we didn’t even trust bottled water. We had an extensive filtration system put in for both our house and even our pool! But most Americans, including myself these days, can’t afford such a system. I’m currently dealing with very bad, very old pipes that are both in my walls and our city pipes which are continually rusting and breaking. I had a pipe rust through in my ceiling last week and showed my friends on WeChat the horrible damage I’m dealing with..the whole infrastructure is so antique, so corroded; it took almost 3 hours just to shut it off. It destroyed half my home. My friends in China were shocked about that and other infrastructure failures we’ve had lately. Local and State governments just aren’t willing to update and fix infrastructure. An old gas line exploded in my daughter’s city in New York last year-3 people died and many more were injured. The media later said that gas line was almost 80 years old…and there are MANY, MANY more like it. It’s both sad and terrifying. My best friend’s husband is from Russia and they have been dealing with a LOT of bigotry, harassment..even threats. About 20 years ago, they actually lived in Harbin for several years and traveled throughout China. Before my Son died, he had wanted all of us to join him in China, saying it is healthier, safer and friendlier. My friend and I are now seriously considering going over there and a medical research team I worked with for many years is now in Beijing…I’d love to, but we’ll have to see about my health issues here first. (Although that’s another subject you don’t want me to get started on. My daughter is a Nurse Practitioner and is seriously looking into moving either to Canada or Europe.) Anyways, thank you for continuing great videos! ❤️🇨🇳☮️

Yes we will not understand eachother. We love freezing drinks. The more cold the better. So the correct word is not cold but freezing. We like it colder than ice itself lol. And we even suck on ice cubes. And I would never drink warm milk in my life I would puke!!

Love your videos. You need a video of an American who speaks very little Chinese what he thinks about visiting China. Not an ex-pat who lives there. I’ve visited three times and the shock and awe is completely different than someone who lives there. Also knowing “xiao” Chinese makes it a lot more interesting. And last time, pulling out paper money instead of using an app to pay was an experience.

PSA: Just because something flushes and does not clog your toilet does not mean it is safe to do so. You shouldn't flush toilet paper in China because the sewer system is not designed to handle it. Your toilet may not clog, but you may cause clogs in other pipes in the system or the treatment plant itself.

@@johng4093 I was speaking generally. I can't claim knowledge on all the sewer systems in China. It is certainly possible some hotels have a pretreatment process to deal with paper. Some of the newer sewer systems in China may even be able to handle paper as well. I think it is far more likely in most cases that they feel the tax revenues from the hotels are worth the additional expenses of dealing with clogs in the system due to tourists

From what I can say most of the things mentioned here can be applied to both countries, except tipping culture, food and drinking hot water.

The American trend of adding a tip to the bill defeats the point of tipping. It's supposed to be a reward for good service made at the discretion of the customer, not a mandatory add on. And my attempt in Chinese: 美国强迫顾客付小费的习惯就没有逻辑。给不给小费应该是顾客自己决定的。那样的话我们可以奖励良好的服务。

Blame the exemption of certain service industries from the minimum wage. Their base pay is below minimum with the assumption that their total pay including tips will be above minimum wage

In US the tip is optional, nobody can make you pay one. Only exception is if you come in a large group (> 8) they may tell you ahead of time that you a "gratuity" will automatically be added to the bill.

i learned a lot about Chinese culture from this vlog and i'm very grateful. a couple of notes on what happens in the US. most stores do stay open on weekends these days, it's only small stores and some east coast stores that close. One other thing to note is that there is a huge dropout rate in US colleges and Universities, almost 50%. i wonder if it's different in China?

More like 40%. Personally, I think the bigger problem is many graduates obtain degrees in subjects for which there is little or no demand. In most cases whatever job they get after college won't pay back the money invested in their education. These students are still in an impractical, childlike thinking mode. Don't mean to be harsh, but young people should face reality sooner rather than suffer the consequences later.

This is upper intermediate. They did slowed down and reduced the amount of idiomatic phrases used. In normal interview, educated people would not peonunce each character this clearly. They did a very good job for the learners.

Edinburgh is pronounced ed-in-bruh. This has nothing to do with British vs American English. It’s pronounced the same in both.

There are regional differences in pronunciation of town names in the US though. New england retains more British pronunciations than many other areas of the country
