    I love this podcast - it fills a much needed gap. Previously, when I tried to listen to natural Chinese speech, all I could find was infuriatingly slow, unnatural "lessons". How can anyone learn a language and learn to understand native speakers without listening to the way people really speak? Thanks!

    I am learning loads! Thank you very much for your efforts. It would good to see characters underlined that belong together such as the word experience (timeline: 8:50, jingli) Unfortunately, this word is nowhere mentioned in the English translation below, such as many other words left out... For a foreigner learning Chinese it is not always clear which characters belong together and add up to a meaning.

  • @MandarinCorner2

    @MandarinCorner2

    Hi! If you are not clear which characters belong together, you should check the pinyin. We usually arrange the pinyin accordingly because we were aware that students might find it difficult to know which two or three characters are meant to be one phrase.

    Hello Mandarin Corner team.... Great job as usual.... However, a couple of years ago, I saw a documentary about that topic and it seems that there is another reason which has to do with real estate and taxes. If I remember properly, people don't pay as much taxes when they sell their house after they split up or something like that. In fact, it seems that many couples get divorced, sell their house, and then get married again.... lol.... I don't know if I can find the link again (it was a long time ago) and I do not garantee it will be in english but I'll try if anybody is interested..... Have fun and thousand thanks for your great videos.... :))

    @nattes2620

    Ok, I got now the real explanation..... After the Chinese government decided to increase the taxes on the benefit of selling houses, the solution Chinese people found is the following : the buyer marries the seller, so no taxes to pay and when all the papers are done, they get divorced and eventually marry again their ex wife or husband..... Clever isn't it ? This guy explains everything very clearly kzread.info/dash/bejne/qnqFqbCimdzXpc4.html. Unfortunately it is in French;;; sorry for that :((

    Excellent video. During the Ch'ing dynasty there was a Chinese saying: 10 matchmakers, 11 liars. Apparently, they lied a lot because they were paid only if the matches looked promising? I wonder if they still compare hours, day, etc. of birth...

  • @MandarinCorner2

    @MandarinCorner2

    In my village, I know that many matches are done by relatives. And yes, if the matches are successful, they get some reward. It can b a pair of new shoes which is a kind of tradition in my hometown, or some Hongbao (money). Regarding comparing two people's birth, some people still do it. But in my village, people don't care about it too much since there are way more guys than girls. Guys' family will take any girls, even divorced ones that used to be looked down upon.

They didn't believe, they used to say that family value are a keystone of the Chinese society. But everything changed within fifteen years. Decay of family values in China happened quicker than in Russia or the U.S.

    In my opinion, divorce has a very negative effect on the well-being of children. Kids need stability. If you raise them without it, they will be forever unstable in their lives and instability in their lives will cause lots of problems for themselves and society. This is an important aspect of being married. My parents had a long and messy divorce and it had severe consequences on the lives of all of their children (they have 4). These consequences included creating suicidal tendencies in some of the kids, and destroying their ability to concentrate in class due to ongoing family problems. I think divorce can be used as an option, but it shouldn’t be used so flagrantly as it is in today’s societies and generations.

    The question should be, how many of Chinese marriages are actually due to loving their partner? The answer is not many. I know of many Chinese marriages where the couple is still together because tradition still trumps happiness. Now that this is changing, expect more divorces and less people getting married unless they actually love their partner and it isnt marriage of convenience or arranged.

    Vastly different than Americans. From what I understood, Chinese people get married for the sake of their parents. Meanwhile Americans (at the very least my friends) are getting married at a young age because "everyone else is doing it, so I'm going to feel out of place if I don't settle down".

    多数中国父母也希望自己的孩子找一个附近的人结婚,这样他们可以经常见面。我觉得亚洲这边的文化可能整体来说都差不多。越南和中国的文化也是非常相似的。

    Yes! We actually tried to go slower than we usually do and we also try to enunciate words clearly. This audio podcast is meant for students who are at lower-intermediate, advanced beginner, or intermediate levels.

    You explained predominantly female perspective on the issue, without trying to understand the causes of adultery, violence, etc. Wives or girlfriends pester their partners, demanding more money, that's all.

    So pestering and demanding money are equitable to domestic violence? Hope that's not what you're suggesting. Yikes. Exposing yourself.
