Jazmin Richards started making candles as a stress-reliever from her day job, and so she could burn clean candles that wouldn’t bother her son’s asthma. She took her hand-made candles to a local holiday market in late 2019. When COVID shut her son’s school in early 2020, she took the leap on her candle making business and Blk Sunflower was born.

Jazmin didn’t have extra money laying around for starting a candle business. Other than the candle making supplies, she only spent about $100 on Instagram ads when she first took Blk Sunflower full-time. @@UpFlip Using what you have right now and grow from there. I used to write on the side of my Body Spray with a sharpie marker and sold them for $3 a bottle. Now, I have beautiful labels and bottles that go for $18 a pop. This was such a great interview...

You don't need a lot of money to start a business but you do need other things, like a skillset, a good product or service. Her candles are definitely different. Love how colorful they are and her packaging is eye-catching. I'm gonna save the rest of this video for later. So awesome to hear about these success stories. Unfortunately not everyone is going to be successful but I think you have to try if you're truly passionate about it. Good luck to anyone trying to start a busienss. There are a lot of resources out there if you look around. And there are lots of businesses that don't require a ton of startup capital or inventory or overhead.

It's obvious not everyone will be. Not everyone has good ideas, some people lack patience, or business accumen. The majority of business failures are due to circumstances that could have been prevented but never were. The only people who fail are those who give up all together which is most people.

WOWW! Jasmin is Force!!! I got goosebumps when she was talking straight to the camera about her tips for starting and not making excuses! Incredible! I love that she bootstrapped her business with making a super small quantity really well and did preorders from there. I love that she knew when to bring in help with fulfilment. I love that she has big dreams about expanding! So inspiring!

“Right place at the right time” played a huge part in her success. She started out at the perfect time when supporting black owned businesses was the new thing.
This has inspired me on so many levels! I am not an entrepreneur (yet), still doing the 9-5, but have been dreaming about starting my own business one day. I am not even sure what that business is yet... but watching videos like this makes me realize it doesn't need to be something crazy. When it is done with quality care and you are creating an experience out of it, people are more likely to buy in! Also, listening to your business strategies was something I've been trying to learn for quite some time and you made it so easy to understand! This interview and Jasmine is amazing! Sometimes with creatives they dont want to share openly what works for them. I understand, because they did so much work- and some people think people are stealing from their hard work. But there really are people that have a hard time getting started, or have gotten started but spent a lot of money trying to figure out how to be successful. So Jasmine you're amazing, inspiring, incredible!

As someone whos had a small candle business for a little over a year now, im just doing some research trying to figure out what im doing wrong. My website sales are so few and far between but i haven't experimented much with instagram ads, im def going to use that. I was more focused on google ads but i think that is a bigger ocean to go fish in, and instagram is smaller so u get more serious leads. I def dont want to give up. I want her results so bad though. 👏🏾👏🏾Im great at making candles but marketing and advertising is a whole other beast. Her success is so motivating and i just feel like i should keep trying. Im super excited to try Instagram ads to see what happens.

Try some apartment in your area. New home discount code and they can experience a smaller version but it will lead more people to smell them. A tea light back of your best scents so equivalent to a 3 oz candle

Marketing is a whole other beast! And I've really had to figure out what works best for me and this brand. I had to try a few things, look at my analytics and trends to know where I really should focus my time, money and energy. You can have the best product ever, better than some of these massive corporations, but if you don't market it well then you'll never see the return.

Seeing this was so inspiring I started out with a candle kit from candle science with 12 little tin candles and I gave them out to people that I know and everyone loved the smell and ever since I have been researching how to make my business unique from other brands I’m so fearful that it will flop because I live in Mississippi and people still buy from large corporations but I do hope to be like Jazmin one day

I've heard that candles that you buy are basically 100% American made due to embargo and stuff like that. One of the candle factories that was hit by the tornado in Kentucky was one of those places.

Congratulations Jazmin! We used to sell candles through a catalog and online, many years ago. We found the holidays were the very BEST time. Great for gifts as well as holiday decorating. Valentine's Day also good for romantic candles.

This lady is a true inspiration to any budding small business minded people out there. With just a small amount of money to start with that anything is achievable. She found herself a niche market and took it by the horns and ran with it. Just look at what she has already achieved, truely remarkable. I wish her nothing but a successful future but I think that it goes without saying that she is going to go far. This was a great insight into where she came from and where she intends going. Very interesting because I did pre-orders of perfume oil when I started my business at a flea market. We used to come to the flea market every Saturday. People would come back to get the perfume oil that they requested from us. We expanded exponentially and that was definitely tiring to try to keep up. This year I have my store going into the Painted Tree Boutiques. I will do it even greater this time.

Congratulations on your store!🤗 I am currently going to different venues including flea markets to do my handmade handbags to see if I can move to the next level of creating a business out of them when I have enough money for business license and my own website. I also do pre-orders since they are handmade.
