A Day In the Life of a Candle Business Owner

Candle making is a fun hobby-and it can also be a lucrative business. Blk Sunflower started in March 2020 and made $300K in their first 18 months, and owner Jazmin Richards gives us an insider scoop on a day in her life as a candle business owner in this video.
This video is sponsored by Shopify, the #1 eCommerce platform for businesses. Find out more here: www.shopify.com/upflip
Jazmin started making candles in 2019 to relieve stress from her corporate job. After she made more in 5 days at a holiday market than she earned in 3 weeks at her job, she decided to take her candle making business full-time. And that decision paid off. Her start-up costs were only brought in $1,500 in her first week, and getting featured in more than 50 publications helped keep her sales growing in the months since.
We’ve talked to Jazmin before about starting her business, and in this follow-up, we’ll take a closer look at how to make candles and run a successful handcraft business. Making the candles is just the first step of the process, of course. We’ll also see Blk Sunflower’s workflow and SOPs, and how Jazmin leads and organizes the business.
While Jazmin makes all the candles herself by hand, she has a team to support the rest of her business needs, including a publicist, accountant, and business manager. We’ll find out how she communicates with her team and the key tasks she handles each day as the owner to keep Blk Sunflower moving forward. It’s a must-watch video for anyone who wants to see how a handcraft business functions on the day-to-day level.

Having a website that says "sold out" instead of a website thats been taken down imo is much better. Sold out indicates that your product are actually in demand whereas a website thats inactive/taken down due to restocking gives the impression that the business isn't managed as well. Also if your products are mostly sold out instead of completely sold out, it gives the customers a good idea of which products are popular vs. the rest

You have to see it from the business perspective - if all the products on the website are sold out how are you making money? Most people when they see a website completely sold out they're clicking off. Why? Because they can't buy a product and thats when you as a business lose money... and customers! Its also giving "lack of inventory management".

@@user-mn8hb2dh2q you can add a text that says come back at "so and so date" where all products will be back in store, or create a preorder link. I agree that website domain itself costs money, so if thats the reason why the website is being shut down, that would make more sense for me

  • @mrembo25

As a business owner I can tell you Jazmine is absolutely right. A 'sold-out' site isn't a good look. A site closed for restock allows us to collect emails and build our list. On the back end we segment all those new emails and give them a special discount code to use at restock! That's the smart way to do it, EVERYONE WINS! PS: the domain is NOT shut down. The shop is simply put on vacation mode which displays one page and that's where your restock message goes including your list builder.

No im home due to having covid and I was able to come into some funds and I took the opportunity to go ahead and start my candle making journey. I'm going to start with wax melts because I feel they're easier and a good way to get people invited to the different scents that I have to offer and then I can lead them to my website to buy the actual candle. One day I hope to be in you position where I have a higher demand for my product. Thank you for the inspiration. Great video! You are so natural in front of the camera. So exciting to see your process and loved your interaction with your son. I have a guppy story. When I was a kid, of 7 or 8, I received guppies for one of my birthdays. They were prolific! But as a kid I wasn't very good at taking care of them, so eventually all my supplies went into the storage closet. A year or two later, I found the tank and some of the shells. One of the larger snail shells rattled when I shook it. I started turning it round and round until to my surprise several dried baby guppies lay on the table. I guess that when they were born, they probably took refuge inside the shell to keep the adult guppies from snacking on them🤦‍♀️

You may know this already, but a simple way of organizing ordering is the reorder card method. Print "REORDER PART #______________ on a bright-colored card. Then stack up the packs of, for instance, glue sticks, with the card on the second pack from the bottom. When the employee pulls the pack off the stack and reveals the card, they take it out and hand it to you. Then you have a physical reminder to order more. Your story is very inspiring, and I hope you have many years of success.
