I agree with universal, no one is perfect, however there are indeed steps to be taken to avoid and reduce the amount of damage a mistake can do. In this instance, looking beyond where you are shooting, if your aiming for a tree, and there is a boat just past it with people on it, you do not take that shot, that is a choice not a mistake, the mistake is missing the tree, but the choice was to take that risk in the first place. just my 2 cents.

If you never take your gun off the range you'll always be 100% certain of your backstop. Going into the woods opens the opportunity to fire into an area that looks like a backstop but has people concealed in it. That's why we wear orange and announce our presence if we are aware of hunters in the woods. The world isn't a cold range.

The tree's are irrelevant , it's a public body of water with likely other peoples "summer homes" and "waterfront properties" and its an open path for bullets to go anywhere with active people. Also in majority of US it is illegal to shoot into or over bodies of water with waterfowl hunting being an exception. It's pure idiotic negligence.

@Ruthless Red you going to walk away when someone pulls a gun on you? Sounds like "real men" just don't want to see it coming then. The problem is there are allot of guns out there and people use them, you just put yourself and your family at a significant disadvantage by choosing to not have one. In the old days people carried around swords and dagger for protection and older days still, clubs and stone axes. It's just protection with modern weapon escalation. You're not courageous you're just prideful and stupid.

Smart move start a gunfight with someone you can’t see who’s in the tree line and has cover and concealment while your in a boat with nowhere to take cover and on an unstable platform to get a decent shot... much smarter than just cranking the motor up and getting the hell outta the danger zone when you first heard the shots being fired. It takes a special kinda stupid to shoot someone’s boat like that, another kinda special to not move your boat because your busy fishing when you hear the shots coming at you and a WHOLE NEW level of special to do what you suggested.

Fishing POV Oh, there was a duck blind hidden back there in the brush, outside of the pond? I couldn't hardly hear the guy responding to you, so I assumed he was at least maybe 75-150 feet away. So what you are saying, is that the hunters KNEW you were on the pond, and decided to fire in your direction as a way to complain that you were inconveniencing them? If so, that makes it MUCH worse than my initial assumption that they were just a couple guys plinking or hunting when they sent a round or two your way, not realizing you were there. If they were firing in your direction to make a point that they didn't like you being there, they need to be locked up! If someone shows up somewhere and causes you an inconvenience, and it's likely they don't even know you are there in your duck blind, then the OBVIOUS thing to do is to TALK WITH THEM. You don't shoot at people because they happen to be enjoying the same lake you are!

Yea Na They can ricochet, once you pass a certain speed water behaves more like a solid not a liquid. Also it's horrible practice to shoot in a direction where if you miss the bullet can keep traveling. This is why you fire into a dirt wall or sand pit at a range.. Worst part is the guy had the audacity to disagree with the fisherman. "you shot my boat" " nah I shot the tree" The boat is behind the tree obviously dipshit

I think people just dont want shit like this to happen. If you arent mentally stable and/or know nothing about guns, you shouldnt own one. Educate yourself first or else this might happen. Shooting without ensuring you have a proper backstop is both dangerous and extremely unsafe. Especially a .22 which can carry up to one mile. I'm thankful it was infront of your boat and didn't hit you, a .22 can hit bone then bounce around in the body tearing everything up. I say a little prayer of thanks to your guardian angel.

One time I was at the range and shot a .22 and it bounced off of a shotgun shell flew over my head, ricocheted off the hood of my car and flew over the horizon killing the governor of Kentucky (two States away) while he was sitting on his toilet. Always be sure of your target and what is behind it and never shoot at a bush unless you've taken a careful inventory of each branch and leaf of it and every other tree or bush within a one mile radius. For fisherman, you should never cast a hook into the water unless you are 100% certain that there is not a diver in the vicinity or any endangered fish that you might catch by your thoughtless bycatch. You should always swim ahead of your boat to ensure that no wayward manatees or swimming children get prop struck (anything less is totally irresponsible and will give a bad name to all fisherman).
