no way you interviewed Phroxzon, you guys are genuinely the best
The most anticipated crossover in BBC history. Been a huge fan of Phroxzon for years and it makes me so excited to get to see him on the BBC.
‘the balance team is silver’. ‘actually no one on the team is silver’. LMFAO what an amazing episode
honestly incredibly brave of the guy to do this considering how much hate rioters get. i have hope in this community that we dont behave like the rest on this

The hate comes from fat little timmys that are only children that think they know more than game designers.

This is sooo gold. Please more interviews with rioters.
Absurdly interesting video guys. This might be my favorite ever. So refreshing and interesting to hear such a well articulated, intelligent, and transparent argument for why Riot balances the game the way they do.
Such an amazing interview! I appreciate how much Phroxzon clearly cares about the game, about his job, and about us - the player base. You can hear in his voice how he genuinely wants the game to be balanced and feel good for as many people as possible.
BBC: We love Riot here Previously on BBC: Nathan: $%×&@# Riot for making Bel'Veth!!!
This is a very good interview, love the work. I wish I knew your channel earlier, Curtis doesn't talk much about BBC in his main channel so took me a while but I'm really enjoying this channel I'm even watching all videos sequentially xDDD
One of the best episodes! Amazing interview thanks guys
Absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much
Thank you for this deep dive Phroxzon! Subbed to your channel and thank you BBC for another BANGER
Yess, thanks Phroxzon and BBC. Love it
This guy was awesome and hilarious. Really appreciate this episode!!!
Loved being able to get this perspective from a rioter! :)
It's fun to see someone that passionate about their work 😃
Exciting one!
1:00:00 One of the things I've seen about Mental Stack from high lvl FGC is that, they say the difference between a high lvl player and low lvl player isn't the amount of Mental Stack they have available, but where they prioritize their Mental Stack. Which isn't to say that more experienced players don't tend to have "larger" Mental Stack, because if you've seen a situation a million times, literally auto pilot when you clear your jungle, etc., then you technically have more Mental Stack to direct elsewhere to other things. But the big difference I saw talked about was that a high lvl player knows where to direct their Mental Stack and when to do so. Let's say for example you're a Top Laner worried about JG ganks because you don't know where the JG is in the first 3 mins, so you play overly safe and put a ward down in the river to try and see the jungler. You can hardly lane and get dumpstered because of it even though you'd win lane otherwise. But if the Mental Stack was put towards tracking where the enemy JG started and they knew the earliest a jungler can reach their lane based off of where they started, they can play the statistics game and simply not put Mental Stack towards checking the map for the JG or playing safe at all until a certain time point in the game. Kind of a poor and weird example in some ways, but I think it gets the idea across. A good player knows where to prioritize their Mental Stack because of their experience. Not just from being able to auto pilot certain actions with muscle memory and past experiences.
Amazing episode
I would love to talk to phroxzon over some of these points. What an interesting Episode.
The comments on game balance being only a part of how enjoyable the game is reminds me of a video from Core-A Gaming, a KZread channel that makes video essays on fighting games. He said that the only truly balanced Street Fighter game is the original Street Fighter where both players were limited to playing Ryu and Ken, two completely identical characters, which makes for a boring game. Balance by itself is worthless.
@HanyuuHOLO
Жыл бұрын
How was the game "truly balanced" if only two characters were good enough to be played? Or do you mean that every other character would counter some other character, as they were too different from each other? I'm completely ignorant on the topic by the way, I'm asking out of genuine curiosity.

BBC was shown on the IGN channel! More BBCers will be created hopefully cause of this episode, excellent work guys!
Love the video! Lately i've been noticing that people are being TOO scared to force neutral objectives because of the new patch, would love to hear your opinion on that.
I recently found an interssting dichotomy in comment sections between the actual podcast and the youtube shorts. If you look, almost every single youtube short talking about balance has a mostly negative comment section compared to the podcast comments which is all mostly positive from what i found. It makes sense though, people viewing from shorts dont have the context from the podcast to see that this dev and all the other riot devs really care about the game and that balancing it can just be a nightmare.
A good example of community perception driving balance is with objective bounties this season. The community being able to draw attention to outlier games really put a spotlight on what worked and what didn't.
Best episode so far i think

Fastest 2 hours of my life... very interesting episode, guys.
IMO swains midscope was great design. Hitting multiple people with E feels so great from the moment you hear the sound, to seeing multiple lines indicating that you can pull everyone, seeing them all getting jedi dragged towards you, seeing the birds/souls fly towards you and then hearing the demonic whispers. And on the other side, for the players getting hit, the reaction usually isnt "OMG THIS IS SO ANNOYING AND OP" but rather "fuck we shouldnt have been standing 4 people within a 200 units circle, thats kinda dumb". For some contrast, akshan getting a trail towards you, while in perma stealth, coming out from the shadows to obliterate you while he is in a dash that he then can dash out of making it completely meaningless to even throw a skillshot, aka no window to retaliate, and then gaining 100 extra gold and reviving a teammate. Not even the akshan is like "OMG THAT WAS SO EPIC IT FELT SO GOOD" and the person getting revived, with food in their mouth is like "bruh i had a 30 second break from the game and you ruined it". Such a poor mechanic that doesnt "feel" rewarding for anyone involved, but the mechanic is super powerful. Terrible design.

Nice interview, good insights ! On the tanks matter: remove some damage from tanks. I mean if you can take 4000 pre-mitigation damage without even dying and still be able to kill a squishy that's not normal at all. And that's the fondamental problem of tanks in my opinion.
Once I heard Phroxzon said he would remove Master Yi from the game, I immediately trusted his judgment

When you guys talk about Soraka landing Q's to heal more, that is actually what it does right now "If this hits at least one enemy Champion , the star dust returns toward Soraka to grant her Rejuvenation for 2.5 seconds. While Soraka has Rejuvenation, Astral Infusion will also grant the effects of Rejuvenation to the target ally for the same duration."

I like the idea of earlier today a dozen people pulling up earlier today in LA, someone says “Energy champs need more energy innit?”, then enough people greenlit it and boom now Zed Akali Shen Lee getting energy efficiency buffed at the same time Definitely a great video, I just thought visualizing this to be funny

Bel'Vath,??( Bel'Veth sound dum) POWERFUL,?? DO NOT MAKE ME,...OH WAIT YA THAT IS STRONG.
Things to take from this: Viego is being built wrong. Mana runes op. Currently jg doesn't give a lot of exp and gives good gold. So AP junglers are op. Anatemas is BROKEN in soloQueue but NOT BUILDS IT. Mundo with anatemas is broken. Edit: Ekko jungle is the more common way of playing the champ in the top 1000 ekkos, but in the top 10 best players they are almost all mid laners. Also as a last item anatemas is nice for ekko...
Dude I think I’m going to take a break from league until Monday rolls around and I can’t not listen to the BBC which makes me want to play again lol fck

Sylas,?? POWERFUL,?? DO NOT MAKE ME LAUGH.
His comment about pyke being good for the game just strikes me as weird--what if there was an AD marksman who was also a tank? Would that be good for the game because it's a "novel" experience? Blows my mind how someone would be allowed to play an assasin and not have to deal with some of the worst aspects of the class, as waveclear and taking turrets are both remedied by the fact that he's played in the support role. Mental stack not taken up by the need to last hit, crazy mobility and stealth, and he gets to lane against the class most heavily countered by assassins (enchanters and marksman). And then later when talking abouit balancing tanks he literally says "assassins can't be weak" but like why not? All that being said I rally respect the knowledge and passion this guest has, seems like he really knows his stuff!

This conversation was interesting but it goes to show the gap between riot and the playerbase. How is 90% of the playerbase all grouped together with 3 additional groups above it. That 90% should be broken down a little more, surely a new player isn't equal to a gold in riots mind.

In terms of how they approach the game and what is "broken" to them, a gold 4 player and a new player are very similar. If the counterplay is to do something with the wave more complicated than a simple "dont push", the gold player will most likely know exactly as much about how to do it as the new player does.
@sharkweek1988

Sadly gold players are actually quite similar to new players so balancing them together makes sense. Don’t get mad at riot, get mad at low elo players inability to make logical choices
@fortcolors9887

@@sharkweek1988 What's there to even be mad about? People who play at a certain level, no matter the elo, stay in that elo unless their quality of play changes.
I just dont want to be rude, but.. BUT! You guys are big on process, and quality, and narratives. This guy, Phroxzon, clearly has issues. A LOT. So how come he is not called out on how the actual fuck are you the lead game designer if you legit cannot reach master?
they "balance" around skin sales and adc and mage being the only viable carry roles in the game. they ve made soloq a grindfest nobody but pro players/content creators play anymore and made pro play unwatchable outside of a couple korean teams and a couple of elite european players' teams. thats your guest.
