I remember when this song came out. It was hard to listen and watch at first because as a former sergeant in the military I had troops that went through this and needless to say, the outcome was the same. Our soldiers go through alot and sometimes bad things happen. Even though it is a sad song, it has truth to it. Thanks for your heartfelt reaction

I'm a Veteran and prior contractor for Uncle Sam who spent a lot of time in Iraq and Afghanistan. No need to get into more detail than that. I knew this beautiful SSG and she always had a little picture of her husband and kids in her hummer. I wasn't on Post when she received the letter, but she had it next to her when they found her. She'd received a Dear Jane letter and didn't take it well. While out on patrol near the post she took her sidearm and put one through her head as she sat alone in the hummer. When I got back everyone was talking about it. I knew the guy who had to do the casket escort. Rough all the way around. It's interesting that Maggie says no one is worth it, yet to many people, their chosen one is their entire world. Losing that person is the most destructive thing imaginable to them. I know, I lost the love of my life to an undiagnosed brain tumor spinning me into a level of self-destruction that baffles me how I survived it. This song hits hard for the people who feel they've lost everything. There's a lot of us out here.

As a Army veteran, I can tell you this happens more than the general public knows. Back then, guys were coming home after one or two deployments suffering from PTSD(though that's not what it was called) and finding their wives/girl friends cheating. Now they come back after six or more deployments(with some time in between) to find Mary Jane with Jody. If you can't handle what comes with being with a service member, DON'T get into a relationship with them.

When you truly and deeply love someone that love being shattered can destroy you. It isn't a matter of not valuing your life, it is a matter of a hole being carved out of you that you can't fill but being desperate to fill it. You can't know that type of pain until you experience it for yourself.

When soldiers go off to war, sometimes, because of the horrors they are witnessing, the only thing they can hang onto is knowing that there is someone at home that they can get back to. When that is upended, then all seems hopeless. Speaking as a spouse, mother and mother in law, daughter and granddaughter of vets and active duty.

Very true. And when that happens some can't find the will to get out of that depth of despair. Of course it doesn't mean just the vets, but everyone else too. Although vets do have it way tougher.

This song was what I drank to when I came home to a cheating girlfriend. Maggie is right, though - it's not worth drinking yourself near to death over. I did find someone better and I've been sober for about 5 years now. Self-obsessed sob story aside, I've been binge watching these videos for the last couple days and I love both the quality of review as well as the cheerfully bubbly personality Maggie brings. I would love to hear a reaction to any Post Modern Jukebox song featuring Miche Braden. That lady has so much soul in her voice (IMHO) and I would love to hear what the trained opera singer thinks, especially songs like Sweet Child of Mine or Purple Rain. Regardless, new subscriber here!

I gotta quit watching folks reacting to this song. I tear up every damn time. I understand your reaction of anger and positivity. However, I totally understand both perspectives in this song. As someone who has been in similar situations, I also understand the want to find some way to make the hurt go away... be it alcohol or something even worse. My advice is for everyone else, learn to sense when someone needs some kind words to help them through something very difficult (for them). You don't even have to fully understand the persons hurt, just be humble and kind... it helps more than you know.

Depression is real, it changes your brain chemistry and your body chemistry and will make you behave and do things you would have never thought of doing in a normal state. I know this from experience. "Getting over" deep depression is easier said than done. The main thing that helps in doing so is a solid support system behind you (thanks Mom, Dad, and Sisters with all my heart). If you don't have a support system to help you through it, its tough.

This situation happens *ALOT* in the military. Sometimes the guy has buddies and they can rib joke and eventually get his mind off things long enough to move on. Sometimes it ends in murder/homicide. Rare cases but it happens too. The military doesn't train you for having a broken heart unfortunately and drinking is readily available as are drugs. The military punishes when it should be helping tbh. "Oh drunk again huh?! Weekend duty! CQ and reduction in pay" instead of "ohshit man; do you need a shoulder or counseling?" Trained to kill; yet kills itself more often than not unfortunately

I was in the Navy and I can’t count the number of times I saw this happen. The worst time was when I had duty Christmas Eve because I was single so the married guys could have Christmas with their families. On Christmas morning the Duty Chief let us know that a shipmate had committed suicide that night. A lot of veterans I’ve talked to said they knew at least one guy taking their life due to a breakup. No wonder that I was a boarder line alcoholic when I got out.

Yeah, you say that... My wife died and if I didn't have two children to raise on my own I would have been gone too and it would be the end of that and it would have been worth that ending because without them, I would have been done. As it was I returned home, it took six fucking weeks and she was gone. I didn't shed a single tear, I was strong and I stood steadfast in my promise and as my children screamed I held them in my arms and this man, this man they didn't even know became their father. The Captain of the 401'st recon, who prepared a path for others to follow, who painted every target and ensured success was home with children he had met for a few weeks. And we learned to love each other, we learned to cherish one another, we learned to be the people we needed to be and to hold on to every last piece of each other and ourselves. Out of us became the people we are today. The people that do not bow to anyone. I became a man and raised my children in a way that they know that no matter what, they are loved and no matter what, I will be there even when they don't ask me to be. I was a warrior and I saved a lot of people from certain death but in the end, my worth is in the father I became and the father that I am. Now I'm a grandfather, and I got a call the other day to go to war. I'll train people to do what we did, that is as far as I'll go and with that they will prepare a road for others to follow and they will paint their targets. They will win because we do win... Not a man lost under my command and yet I'm the only one left. You don't leave the war behind and if you have nothing at home... I miss every last one of them but I understand, if I hadn't have my family to come home to, if it wasn't required of me... if it wasn... I make excuses but it wasn't my fault, none of it was my fault there was nothing I could have done better and believe you me I've gone over this a million times in my mind... We prepared a road for others to follow and what we had to do was what we had to do to do our job, to save lives and we did, we saved entire villages, we just didn't have the manpower to protect them all. So you stand there, outside a burned down house with three kids and a woman inside of it where you were invited for supper and you tell yourself that ... that you did good, that it was out of your hands. That it wasn't your fault. You couldn't have known. The lies you tell yourself to stay alive add up and the good man that you once were is the wretched character you become. You pretend it doesn't get to you and you try to do good but in the end... It doesn't matter. I was the Captain and now I'm the last one standing.

Women think that as men our hearts do not break. I assure you that our hearts are just as fragile as a woman's heart. It hurts just as bad when it gets stepped on. The difference is, when our hearts get stepped on, we have to put on a front. It hurts! am married, and happy, but I was hurt by a girl in my early years, and it still hurts. I can never forget my first heart ache, because, I never let it happen again. Thanks!!!

Ricky’s daughter is his mini-me, that's for sure. But for clarity for Maggie, we don't know the relation in the video. They did not have kids. I always wondered if she and that boy shooting the wife the stink eye were his niece and nephew or something. Also Ricky has 2 sons...was that boy one of his sons?

My childrens father completed suicide during our separation in 2005--- my kids were 8,4, and 9 mos old--- He left a note that said "Til Death do us Part" he didnt want to live without me and his children -- I can relate to her guilt ... its so tough, and it never gets better. Its so hard to tell your children their daddy is never coming home--ever again.

You heard this a year ago, but still have not done an Alison Krauss song. She has the purest voice ever. I'd suggest her version of "When You Say Nothing At All" or "Baby, Now That I've Found You". The guys in Union Station are very talented also. I've seen an analysis of her vocals using tracking/isolating software that shows she has the most perfect pitch.

You're still young. As you get older, you may find that love and relationships are not that simple. When I was younger, I thought like you do. I've been married now over 30 years, and it has been a very rocky road sometimes. You don't just walk away from something you have built for so long, even when you're that angry; especially when there are children involved. Divorce is so easy and common nowadays, I think our younger folk don't develop the same sense of what commitment really means. Once those bonds are forged, breaking them is that much harder,

you know, at that age ur right..but let me tell u as an old guy, there are not a lot of options in starting over..especially if u have serious health issues. The great songwriter Townes Van Zandt wrote "Waiting Around to Die". Im living that song everyday. I may not hasten it in, but I am not scared of dying. I welcome death when it gets here. Time is a stalker waiting to pounce.

💪 This is such a great song and Brad Paisley has plenty. My other favorites of his are Part Two, Then, Remind Me (with Carrie Underwood), He Didn’t Have To Be, Letter To Me, Ticks, I Wish You’d Stay, Who Needs Pictures, I’ve Been Better, Holdin’ On To You, Alcohol, Celebrity, I'm Still a Guy, and Water. My favorites from the angelic-voiced Alison Krauss are her covers of Ghost in This House and When You Say Nothing At All.

I know this is just a music video and all, but imagine this. He fought through hell, watching his brothers get blown apart, screaming for their mothers. Cold nights in a muddy foxhole on some miserable battlefield, thousands of miles from home. Thinking of her, of being back home were all that kept him upright, the only thing that sustained his spirit in hell. For him, to come home to that, to have everything that drowned out the misery and hell of explosions and screams of the dead, ripped away is an anguish i wouldnt wish on my worst enemy. Its not just that she cheated, but also her memory was what kept him alive, now thats gone. Everything he had held onto for years was gone. The horror of war and losing her all mixed together burned more than anything i can even imagine and i know why he drank, hoping to drown out the memories and hurt. Life is precious, but sometimes life hurts more than death. Sometimes, we hope, pray, that if theres life after this, that it wont hurt like this one does.

I know I'm late to the game on the comments here, but two observations I'd like to make: First, right or wrong of what the subjects of the song did, they were both victims of war as much as if they'd been killed in action. Second, you ask "who is the little girl?" And also, "why are they happy at the end, they're dead?!" The girl stands a bit aside from the rest of the funeral party and is the only one who sees the couple together again and happy. Perhaps the girl is one of the angels singing the "whiskey lullaby," and helping to right one of the wrongs of war.

Brad is super and Allison is a staple of the country genre. She plays violin so beautifully also. Listen to her with Vince Gill. Amazing stuff. Allison Krauss and Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin are putting out their 2nd album this very week. Robert put it out on you tube 2 days ago. They won Grammy awards for their 1st album. I listened to clip of this 2nd album. Check it out, Maggie. "Raising Sand" was their 1st album. The 2nd album is a sequel to the first called "Raising the Roof"..

While holding a guitar in my arms and drinking a hot Americano, I looked out the window and comfortably watched your videos on my small phone. I think I was bewitched by the algorithm. The quality is good and the best. How did your channel have such a wonderful talent that is full of strange charms unique to your videos? You have the ability to make the moment wonderful and attractive. Your video is a good video and I think you are a talented person. I have no doubts that you will do well. I have been so complicated and tired, but I thank you for comforting me. thank you. I am amazed at the excellence of your skills and thank you for taking the time to melt my heart warmly because of your sincerity and hard work in watching the video. I looked up and it was your video. In the dawn sky, the star you see from under the sky is so beautiful and I am so thankful that it adds to the enchantment. I can feel how much time and effort you put in. I would like to give you my heartfelt praise and support for your channel to gradually develop into a very large channel. I'm trying to play. I want to play guitar while listening to the sounds of birds touching my heart while flying in the autumn sky. It feels like you put a lot of effort into making a better video. Even in the world, there are many things that can be comforted even in the hardships. A blue landscape is seen by the window today, which gives us a lot of excitement.
