Yes he sure did that a lot. Seems a lot of artists in that day did it. I have no idea how the sound people or what tech may have been involved but it was a "showy" thing IMO. I don't know how else to describe it?

@@trixiebella Back then, the mic to & fro was used same as it is now, tho to a lesser degree, I'm sure: to add or diminish the vocals, as needed. What MR is asking - I'll not make a big deal about it, but I had the same Qs at the time - is how does the sound remain constant whilst moving the mic to or fro? Completely constant. Exactly constant, even. 🤔 Take a look at the original Bob Seger live version and he's moving ~around~ the mic to lend inflection where he wants it. (This is not to disparage Kenny or his rendition; his legacy stands on its own & one has nothing to do with the other, so far as this video production goes. Even so, MR is familiar with her own profession & perhaps not so familiar with how "movie magic" got made for our 27" SUPER-low-def Zeniths back in ye olde days lol. 😂)

...eeeehhhhhhh... were they, though? That is, I'm not saying anything here, but MR's Q is legit and KR doesn't always *perform* (my take, 1983 concert). By the same token, I think MR is right: pre-recorded. As a simple comparison, take a look at the original: Bob Seger- We've Got Tonight live - KZread. So far as this video goes: the camera-cutting, the off-screen mic... idk either way, but that's the way I saw it then & still see it now. No issues either way.

There's got to be some sort of technique thing going on cause if you notice both Dolly and Kenny will move the mike away/drop it if they aren't actively singing. Though I do get your question with how he is still being picked up but maybe they are THAT hot and both of them are using their voices to manage. Makes me wonder how different the mikes were back then (cause this was back when transistors were just beginning to be used in amplification) interesting questions...

I watched the mic movements after you brought it up. When his voice was softer, it was closer. When he put more energy into the words he held it further away. Perhaps this gave the impression that the volume was the same. However, watching the mechanics (chest, throat, mouth and body movement) it was obvious that he was changing the energy of his delivery for different lines and then moved the microphone. I see many singers do this, most notably rock and metal singers will move the microphone with some exceptions. This is likely more attributed to the fact that most rock/metal singers do not have classical training and often learned on the fly and find unique ways of delivering their vocals. These older recordings with the exception of the poorly designed studios that artists regularly found ways to mock. Musicians including the vocalists were frustrated with lip-syncing and pretend playing at those shows that showcased music without being set up to deliver live music and let it be known creatively. Artists like Kenny Rogers can actual sing and don't need to use tricks. This again, goes for most artists at that time.

I disagree; that is to say, I agree w/ MR. Now, my Elacs or my own ears may be deceiving me... I'll accept it either way... but the tone & pitch - to say nothing of the volume lol - did not change at all, regardless of the mic distance. To be sure, my assessment of the energy of his performance matches yours. It's just the actual output did not match what we were seeing. So I'm going to go with pre-recorded. KR didn't lip sync, but the actual audio was overlayed with the video portrayed. I'm sure of it lol.

Bob Seger drew criticism when this song first hit the airwaves because of the subject matter. Yet within a few years that pretty much no longer mattered when others covered it, in truth the banter between Dolly and Kenny is more risqué than the song. Good performance, good reaction, good edit. And how did he do that microphone trick?
