This happened far too often. My father had a similar experience during his short marriage during WW2. He returned to the states and while he was in a mess hall in New Jersey after returning, before he was released, his wife walked in and announced she wanted a divorce. He was so floored that she was gone before he questioned why she was there, not where they lived in Missouri. Short version is that he went to college, met my mother who was a war widow, and several years later I came along.

Speaking as a faithful, former military spouse (my husband retired after he did his 20) The problem with a lot of reactions to this video is that many people don't take the era in which this is set into account. Now, if you marry a soldier you know what you are getting into (or should) but this is set during the war when men were drafted. Its possible that this was the case for the main character and because she didn't set out to marry a soldier, coping was not something she was capable of or prepared for. I've seen a lot of this over the years. Spouses think they can take it, and after a year or two separated from their soldier and stationed far away from any family or friends, the loneliness gets to them and they just can't take it anymore. I've also seen it in reverse, where the spouse is completely faithful but it's the soldier that steps outside the marriage. The bottom line is it takes a great deal of strength to love a soldier. Some spouses have it and some, simply, don't. It's not a flaw, not really. Just some people aren't predisposed to handling the loneliness that can come with being a military spouse. Either way, cheating is not ok. But even I can understand her point of view, how she felt. I felt it. I think every military spouse has felt it at least once. It's what you do about that feeling that matters.

I said it earlier, that whenever couples watch this video, it seems that the women come down harder on the wife than the men do. They hate her for what she did, it seems the guys are more forgiving.

Rick Schroder (the guy in the video) directed the music video himself...He is one of the biggest child tv actors of the late 70s to mid 80s. He started in a great movie from 1979 called "The Champ". Its a must see. He also starred with Brad Pitt in another movie called "Across The Tracks" from the 1990s. Another must see. He was also the star of one of the most popular tv shows of the 1980s "Silver Spoons". He was also in so many awesome network made for tv movies & great in every one. He was also on the popular 90s early 2000s show "NYPD BLUE"...Just a great underrated actor.

I feel that she made the mistake from feeling lonely, doesn't excuse it, but does give her some valid empathy. Plus if you consider when you truly feel bad for something you have done wrong, you are harder on yourself than anyone else can be, hence the going to substance abuse.

This was set in WWII and communication was not always quick and so it is highly likely that the woman's character thought that he was gone or for a moment she fell in to Temptation because she was a lonely woman and they didn't have telephone calls back then they only had letters and he could have been deployed and been gone for years. I was a military wife when this song came out and it was devastating because I watched my friends who had communication capabilities cheat on their spouses while their husbands were deployed with mine and it was so get wrenching. I cannot watch this video without sobbing though.

No one knew how much she blamed herself? Who else could she blame? That having been said, I was serving in places where she could not go with me. I was gone to a location overseas where she had no idea what i was doing or when i might return--I was gone for over a year. I came home from my duty station to have to tell her I would be missing supper because i was leaving within two hours. I could not tell her what country I would be in, what I would be doing, or when i would be back. I cannot imagine the fear that must have gripped her heart every time I was gone. The nightmares her imagination must have created in the absence of real info must have been terrible to live with. I would not have blamed her for seeking someone to just hold her and assure her everything would be alright.

This song was released in 2003 so it is not all that old. Older Country would be Johnny Cash, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Kline, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton etc... Brad Paisley is newer, but still in the older country style, but Brad is not a one trick pony as he does sad songs, love songs fun songs and stuff in between. Btw Alison Krauss is featured on this song with Brad and everyone seems to miss that or ignore it.
