Bob seems like a really cool dude. It's hard to believe he's 60. I love those interviews and studio tour. What I like the most isn't the tech talk, it's the little random pieces of wisdom those guy possess and share with the world, it's amazing. Good stuff!

Awesome to see Bob again. As you know we did Fused together with Tony Iommi. Massive influence on my working methods, and a hilarious time in Monnow Valley and the Townhouse studios. Bob and I broke the curry record while mixing - 11 nights in 13 (we broke away to have Italian one night and a Steak on New Year's Eve with Lisa and Chris - plus the most mental taxi ride ever back to the studio). The record turned out good too :) :)

This is by far one of the best educational videos out there. What's so important is "what's not here" like a $250,000 console, and 4 walls (another $1,000,000 worth) of aging exotic gear etc. If I could start by saying (in my humble opinion) It takes 20,000 years of combined experience to make a hit record (recording 100 bands, consisting of 10 members (including support and cast) that have 20 years of experience each, or 100*10*20=20,000 years. So if you're frusterated, and having a little trouble making a hit record, this is the #2 reason why. So, and with is said, how do we get that experience in the little time that we have left? Well, the answer is right here by paying close attention to these videos, and getting trained by the experts that have this experience. So, and to start, let's eliminate about 15,000 years of training by doing the following: a. Your new preamp(s) are the NEVE 1073 and 1081. Sell the rest. b. You sum from protools via a Dangerous Mixer and no other. c. You mic with a sure m57 right to the dead-center of the cone. d. Buy the amps and speakers Bob has and sell everything else. e. Get the guitars that sound great, start with 68-9 reissue's or custom shop guitars, then round out with great sounding third party brands. f. Get the monitors he has and sell your other monitors. g. Make isolation cabinets for "all of your speaker cabinets". Make them just like he did it. This is the second biggest thing you could ever do. Summary, Bob and Warren have just saved you 15,000 years of waisting time, and massive amounts of money. In the future, use this video as a reference. Lastly, and the biggest point made here is "Phase, Phase, Phase" or the lack there of. Here's my opinion: "Simply inverting the phase of multipule audio signals is no where close to having a variable phase controller like the cheap little Radial Enginnering "PHAZER" class-a phase adjustment tool. This tool (get it used) will allow you to dial in the precise phase of your mic in relationship to the other mic's. You'll need one per mic channel. Final statement, If you don't have variable phase adjustment capabilities on every channel, your throwing away a huge part of, and the total essence of, your mix. Thx Scotty

+Produce Like A Pro --Hopefully, sooner than later, the Professional Recording Industry (or what's left of the Professional Recording Industry) will realize that "everyone in the world" wants to make music, but they're afraid, they don't know how, and they don't know where to start. Especially people who can't sing or play music. Sounds strange, but I believe it true. What's so important is all of these people have lots and lots of money, and all they need is expert level help and guidance from Hit Makers like Yourself and Bob. If you guys ever get board, you could go to every city in the world and have close-up and personal Cafe' recording sessions every day of the week for the next 100 years. For the life of me I can't understand why every studio in America doesn't hold casual-jam training sessions because they have the tools, skills, and facility to save the beginner/amateur thousands of years, and 10's of thousands of dollars worth of mistakes. They could charge $20, and provide Beer, a Strat, a Marshall, and a Hit Maker. The place would be packed, and you'd need to throw them out. Then, 1/2 of the these customers would need assistsnce in piece-meal building their own mini-studio and instrument colections(Even more money and work). The key here is, you can look at your retirement money as a number in a bank account, or you can buy an old Strat and Gibson and play it every day. Then, when the market crashes again and again, you can smile at your gutiars while they go up in value, and while your friends just lost 1/2 of their net worth in a day. Lastly and my opinion, if studio owners are going out of business, it's not because they were ever out of customers, it was because they didn't listen to their potential customers walking outside their doors for the past 50 years. This assumption is proven simply by the existence of this website. Summary, In order to catch fish, you need to go where the fish are, and the fish are everywhere, you just need to ask them what they like. (Note, please consider translating these sessions "properly" into Mandarin, German, French, Spanish, etc, and you'll quadruple your exposure with little to no effort.) thx scotty

Warren, I'll try to keep it short, but I'm just so blown away by your channel. I've been live mixing (or trying) since I was in the sixth grade. Mostly volunteer, some small gigs a few years back. (Got to mix for Kopecky Family Band once, that was amazing.) fast forward 12 or so years and I'm getting a chance to engineer some basic demo tracks, so in my hurry to research I find this unfathomable wealth of information and wisdom! Its unreal how generous you are, not just to be open with your knowledge, but to spend hours and hours a week synthesizing it into content here on KZread! I've never been so inspired to challenge myself to try more and more engineering and mixing, and I've never felt like it was as accessible. I've probably watched over half of your videos in the last three weeks -- and already my ear is being trained to hear and pick out all kinds of detail I wasn't hearing before. Man, I'm just blown away.. I hope you know this channel has a huge impact. Ill try and comment consistently, you seem to have a great community here. Again, Thanks. -- Tyler from SC

About starting kids with piano: My dad bought the Alchemy live album by Dire Straits when it came out. I was five and it was an epiphany for me. From that moment on I wanted to play guitar. No way that someone could have convinced me to take piano lessons. I wanted to play guitar. I see that passion in kids today, and if they have that passion and really want to play a certain instrument, don't ruin their passion by forcing them to play an instrument they don't really want to play. Additionally, yes. I had some piano lessons later on, but guitar always was first. And Telegraoh Road on Alchemy is still a sonic paradise for me.

And having been away from 'the biz', & music, this is my 1st knowledge of Mr. Marlette, he's great, that was what the old school cats @ Klub Kev's were about, when some A&R guy/gal would listen to playbacks, demos or the hype mix, they'd frequently ask, "how'd you get THAT outta HIM/HER/THEM???" These cats had worked the '60's from beginning to end, & for them, it was all about just getting a performer comfortable. I (was told to),unscrewed the damn red lightbulb nearly every session I was present at.

Had to stop the video at a specific part when Bob spoke about Paul McCartney coming into the room looking for Alice. Waayyy back when I was uh...young... the first few songs I learned on guitar were of course Beatles songs, and Neil Young music. Flash forward about 25 years, and I'm working in a great Blues Bar called Tobacco Road in Miami. I played there and worked there as well (normal people job) It was my day off and I was just enjoying a few cold ones and sitting in with friends playing there on a Sunday night. Six blocks away Neil is doing a concert for a couple of shows at the Hyiatt Regency Auditorium. The Bar has a mirror behind it and it's one of those smoky Chicago South Side type of environments. As I'm looking at the mirror I see this profile walk past me behind me. Instantly of course I see in my mind's eye the album cover of "After The Gold Rush" and I knew who had just walked past me. Yes it was Neil taking a break from all the chaos and wanting just to have a quiet beer and discuss stuff with his manager without being inundated with fans, and other annoyances. And literally like Bob says in the interview I suck in air and think to myself the same thing... "Beath man...don't say anything stupid...!" Well long story short I did say something stupid after I got the nerve up to go and say hello. (that's another story for another time) But it was so odd to hear that from Bob as by the time this event occurred I'd played with folks like Danny Gatton, Kenny Neal, and many other fine and HUGE musicians...and yet the childhood hero and initial introduction to acoustic rock guitar from when I was sixteen still had the same childlike wonder struck effect on me. And it's still that way... I'm always just amazed at these incredible people as I meet them. I just have to work harder on not saying something stupid.

+Martin Weeks Oh, man. I haven't thought about Tobacco Road in quite a while... With the help and booking savvy of my good friend Cosmo Ohms I played there back in 2005 (I think that was the year anyway). He got us into Tobacco Road, Churchill's, Señor Frog's and one other place in Miami I never remember the name of but could never forget the fun time. TR is covered in history and love. Thanks for the unintentional inspiration to waltz down punk rock memory lane!

+DontWorryImAPilot "The Road" was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Weird story about it. I was referred to it by a Jazz Singer and violinist friend of mine named Nicole Yarling. Her former husband was the drummer for Iko Iko at the time and she thought the venue would be good for what I was pursuing musically at the time. (I was definitely not a jazz player) Through hard work, perseverance and my own tenacity I wound up working there as a Bar Back and as a player. I had the Sunday Night Slot. No one thought it would turn into anything as no one goes out late on Sunday night. I started calling all my musical friends and telling them to bring there horns, guitars etc down and come sit in. Sunday nights became huge, and the regular bartender switched shifts as he didn't like having to work hard on Sunday Nights. As the Bar Back there, I'd get all my stock work behind the bar done, get all the glasses washed then haul ass upstairs to the Cabaret and sit in with whoever was featured show that night. Then run back down to the bar to get back to work. Folks would get dizzy from seeing me like everywhere at every minute. "...Hey weren't you just playing upstairs?...Hey weren't you out on the Patio?... Hey do you own this place...?" It was a riot. Got lots of gigs and referrals from that job/location. Side work for other bands, Solo Singer/Guitarist for other saloons and restaurants. But the best part of all of it was getting to meet and play with literally dozens of astounding musicians that were touring and coming through the "Road". Got to make great friends that way. Kenny Neal, Chubby Carrier, Bill Warton. Nick Cane and the Mavericks and so on. When they finally tor down the Road Last Year, I admit it...I cried. It was like loosing a beloved friend. The Road was always there for me. The people supported me even when I was being a complete jerk. The Musicians helped me, referred me, put me through the paces and so on. We Were Family!! And I will always miss that place and what they stood for. THEY SUPPORTED GREAT MUSIC.

Hi Warren! Thanks for another great video interview! Just a few things: Being from New York, I've crossed paths and with my fare share of famous people. Most of the time, if you just talk to them like they're "normal" human beings, they are very pleasant and congenial. It doesn't surprise me that Paul McCartney and Peter Murphy acted in exactly the pleasant manner you and Bob reminisced. Tom Verlaine and I used to talk on the phone for hours on end; he used to hang out with me at my apartment. I used to bump into Lou Reed and Joey Ramone all the time. (Oops! So much for "normal" or "human beings". LOL!) I met Marshall Crenshaw, and Richie Heavens; both were very nice. Ray Davies of The Kinks was beyond nice! (Can't say the same about Dave though. Oh well.) I lived two blocks away from Elliot Sharp and Eric Schermerhorn. I used to talk with them all the time. Antony Langdon of Spacehog lived across the hall for me. Iggy Pop lived on Avenue B; I was living on East 7th St. between A and B. I would see Iggy in the neighborhood all the time. Jesse Malin, Jordan Rudess. Even if we didn't know each other on a personal level, we'd kind of knew who everyone was, and acknowledge each other in the distance. I used to chat with some famous actors too. As long as you didn't flip out when you'd meet them, all was cool. You know: no Chris Farley SNL moments. HA! Pete Cornish is most noted for his work for David Gilmore, most of all. The Electro-Harmonix Small Stone is probably the best phasor ever, in my far-from-humble-opinion. The Holy Grail is great too! Why don't people just by a Standard instead of ruining the wonderful Deluxe!? The Danelectro Vincent Bell Signature Model Sitar Guitar. I've been in contact with Vinnie a few times in the past few years. Vinnie was the number one call New York session guitarist for three or four decades. He was on all of the Four Seasons sessions. He was often flown out to Los Angeles to pay on sessions there. He should be given honorary Wrecking Crew status. I just spoke with his wife a few weeks ago, Unfortunately, he is not in good health. My father had one of the very first Yamaha acoustic guitars in America in the early '70s. It's still a great guitar to this day! Stu

Produce Like A Pro. For me, Tony and Brian were very innovative in the way that their solo and how they approch the guitar were not influenced by blues lick. It's very true for Brian May. For me it is the first guitarist to play very well thought solo around the vocal line, with such a science in terms of orchestration. The first time I listened to Good compagny, I was floored by the orchestrations. Tony Iommy => Very first real heavy metal guitarist. Very prolific in amazing riff.

Happy Thanksgiving, Warren! Please just let me throw-in two things which always makes me laugh (I remembered these because of parts of your great interview). You know exactly what I am talking about: 1) the "client button" and 2) the "dummy fader". :-D Just explaining it to younger folks who are just starting out (If I may :-) ): the "client button" is any knob you turn a notch higher as soon as the "client" (= anyone who calls the shots at the moment) asks: "I miss some punch, can you make it a little louder/more powerful?" you crank it up a notch and the reply usually is: "Now that's much better!". Since you distorted the signal and don't want this to leave the studio, you crank it down again to where it was when you export/bounce it to stereo (after the client leaving of course). The "dummy fader" is for people in high positions who really have the nerve to actually grab our gear (console or computer mouse or whatever) without even asking and want to participate in a mix, say: ride the level of a guitar or vocal. You "give" them a fader that either does nothing or very little - not every person gets fooled that easily - and let them fiddle all through the mix, providing the satisfaction that they actually participated - but it was in reality damage control. There are more complex varieties of this (try to mute that, now get rid of this etc.) until you end up with something unusable but "approved". It takes a lot of diplomacy and work after the client left to make it sound good again, while not altering the "approved" alterations in an obvious way. These are the years being "taken off" from us. It was a huge headache back in the days of 24 track analog tape and consoles with no or unreliable "total recall". Thank Heaven for DAWs! Now please don't get me wrong (talking to everyone here): I fully understand that many "suits" get excited when they finally see a studio and a music production in progress instead of yet another meeting room. After all: these people are paying us and even if they can be huge egos, they deserve our respect - and the main reason to keep their enthusiasm at bay is NOT because we (the musicians/engineers) feel superior, it's about saving the reputation of these people as well as ours because in the heat and excitement of the moment they can misjudge things badly (we all do that at some point). But still those two "devices" I mentioned above are long since a classic! Just wanted to throw that in :-) Warren: how can I ever thank you for having the patience reading through my ramblings? :-) Just sharing my thoughts as usual, only doing that because you ask us to do if we like. :-) Thanks so much again for your great insight and great channel!

We can definitly hear the sonic influence of this one on the M. Jackson Thriller

+Christian Loudieu Wow, I didn't know that! I was fortunate enough to see Queen live back in 1981 playing "The Game" tour (I was age 20) in the Frankfurt Messehalle, Germany. That's a challenging venue because of the acoustics (long and intense reverb). The painstaking studio overdubbing work (vocals and guitar) were lost, but they made up for it with a fantastic stage presence and flawless powerhouse performances from all band members (plus an additional keyboarder). Always awesome seeing your idols "in person" on stage, and their signature gear (I remember Brian's awesome guitar, John's Fender P. Bass and Roger's signature Ludwig drum kit). To stay on topic: at the time there were many documentaries on tv to promote the 1981 Queen tour. They showed and explained the gear to create the live "multiplying" effects for Brian May and Freddie. As far as I remember they used a whole bunch of early digital harmonizers (Eventide?) and of course multiple delays. Great work from the live sound engineers. I owed "A Night At The Opera" on white vinyl, eventually worn out, I somehow lost that great treasure...

Oh WOW. Such a great vid, this time, Sir! Getting away from the racks & into the psyche & music stuff! And it's the 1st time (maybe you've already) I've heard ANYBODY mention SUMMING!!!! And did a Dangerous box run-down. 'MixerMan', author of 'Zen & The Art of Mixing', amongst a couple others, is who turned me on to summing boxes. Briefly, I'd exited internship (Klub Kev's, Seattle, closed), digital had NO chance, I was sure. Fast forward to doing a demo of my tunes in '12 using a product that tries to emulate a SSL console. THAT's how to get something that sounds fine on the boxes & cans, but playsback in a car like a Star Trek transporter room accident! At the bottom of a bottle of 100% blue agave tequila, typically such a thing I reserve for deaths, I ended up emailing a couple extremely industry successful individuals, if I ever cross paths Warren, it'll be a good laugh, but I cannot, shouldn't name-drop, especially as I had NO IDEA whom these 2 gentlemen WERE, what they'd done.

any further insight into Bob's guitar miking techniques, i know he mentioned 57 dead centre, is that dead centre of dust cap? And blended with other mics or just other amps? seems mic dead centre of dust cap is often said to be a big no no, just recently it seems to be where i am putting my 57 to get the guitars bright enough without touching an eq, anywhere else on the cone i find i need to create significant distance reduce the proximity effect to get the top end.

Hello Warren, I totally agreed that our job is to communicate the artist with the audience, but as I'm starting now, every artist thats come in say: "I want to do song like this artist or to sound like this one", then I try to incentivate them to be they self, do their own song, not be like other. Should I agreed if them and try to do a song like they want to ? Because I really believe that is not about doing something equal someone, it's about creating your own thing with your influences for shure, because the same way I feel that I'm trying to help I also feel that at the end of the work I may justing embarrassing they art.

Hi +Renato Rosa This is a fantastic question that you are raising! I obviously believe in bringing out the best in an artist and creating something completely unique! However I believe that part of our journey is learn from others and sometimes we borrow heavily! But try to encourage their individuality and own uniqueness as best you can! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

Warren, although I watch thousands of videos similar to this, I rarely pop my head up to say anything, and remain a lurker. But this particular episode is extremely good, largely due to your subject. I hate to admit, although I have heard of Bob Marlette before, only in a very general sense, and some of the bands he has worked with are my least favorites. But he is an extremely talented person, and I agree him on so many levels, and maybe I should go back and listen to those bands again.

One thing I've noticed with these studio tours (and not just on this channel), there's not much variety in terms of bass guitars. I rarely see anything that's not a Fender J or P. Now, I kind of undestand why that is. I play a Jazz myself (Squier, but whatever) and I'm looking to get a Precision. Because they have *that* sound and I love it. A few weeks ago I had to sell one of my basses. It was a Jackson JS3 Concert. It had active pickups, just stock from Jackson, with a 3 band EQ. I threw flatwounds on it at one point just to try them out and I loved that sound a lot, too. Why is it that - forgive the hyperbole - no one seems to be branching out in terms of bass guitars? I know Fender makes super solid workhorse-type basses, but is there any other reason? Something besides that and, dare I say it, nostalgia? As always, huge thanks to Warren and company for doing all this. Cheers!

Hi +foodforthegods Thanks for the great comment! My three main tracking basses are a Mexican Jazz Bass with Seymour Duncan Pickups and a Badass Bridge, a Peavey T40 (which I use A LOT!) and an Ibanez EBO with fl;at wound strings on! All get pretty equal use! However if someone was to only have one bass it's usually a P Bass or a Jazz, for many years those were the only viable basses on the market, so they've made their way into our consciousness! The reality is there have many Basses that have come and gone over the years, but the P Bass and the Jazz have always remained! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

+foodforthegods I love my Squier J Bass! I prefer it over any of my others. I hate saying it but mine is the under $200 special from guitar center. I've played everything and this is the easiest bass to plug, play and record with sweet results. It's been such a pleasure to play, I want to try it in a fretless too. Cheers!

Hi +Frederick Thorne Haha I understand! Mine was free because someone owed me money! The Bass probably is only worth anything because of the hardware I put on it! Haha Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
