About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.

When you think that Cabinets should be isolated in another room, and this guy has them in another *building* :D Oh, well, we'll get there, some patience and we'll get there :)

Awesome knowledge and awesome interview. Thanks Glenn!
Very good interview . Also compliments on the outstanding job you did with Warren at the castle. Love the time lapse drum set up.

Great stuff here! Really enjoyed this.
One of the nicest dudes ever! Had the great pleasure of getting to chat with him about his work. Such an amazing Producer!
Great interview and insights from a man that knows the real deal. Awesome !!
Bob Marlette is a brilliant producer really love his metal production course at Pro Mix Academy. Really useful course! Thank you so much Glenn for such a great interview!
Happy 4th of July, and Happy (belated) Canada Day, Glenn and the crew at Spectre Media!
4:07 You didn't forget the bass player! Great interview Glenn and the sound pack sounds great too!
Once again, I learned something new. Blending a bit of Marshall for definition. Thanks, Glenn!
Thanks, Glenn. For years I've been searching for the Hansen sound.
"I'm old and I forget shit" .. this deserves a T-shirt!!
I like how this guy seems totally down to earth, despite having worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. Goes to show that talent and a great personality goes a long way.
Bob seems like a really cool guy to hang out with and I so agree with him about people trying to be the next with something thats already done. I once played in a band from which the singer was a huge fan of not only the singing, but even more the beháviour of Axl Rose on- ánd off-stage, around the time of the Use Your Illusion tour. Man, that guy was a treat to work with! ;)
Great content as usual Glen. Happy 4th you hoser.
This dude is super chill
I always enjoy taking a few guitarists I like and trying to either blend them of take ideas from one rig and use them with another rig.
Respect to all - freakin' awesome. That nugget of gold advice there, "find your own sound" was something I was told by a gentleman who saw me play as a kid. (I later found out who he was and was blown away that he'd even speak to me). I was not about to start windmilling anytime soon. I took to Vox amps, AC15 with 2 reverbs and the original metal zone - wish i'd kept hold of that it'd be worth a bomb now.

So I just bought this pack and have never used an IR before, but have used the Ignite-Amps Amp Sims and thinking they sound like shit and not knowing why, so I thought that the IR and Pulse would simply make it sound like the Amp too, well boy-oh-boy did I learn something completely new just now. With the amp sim models, you need a cab loader! NOW IT MAKES SENSE! This was SOOOOOOO worth the $32.50 I spent on it and then more! This is definitely worth its weight in gold, and I literally just discovered this for the first time! Being an Audio Engineer is fun again! LOL
That's so cool
Great interview Sir! If Bob ever wants to visit the moon let him know we have a pool and a pond ...
During my first years of guitar practicing, my gain knob on my solid state Crate amp was all the way up, all the time !! SLAYER !! Yeah... .it took me years to figure out that it was not the good decision. But nowadays amp sims sound so good. I still need to learn how much gain I need for my recordings.
If I would have to chose a producer for my band record , definitely Bob would be my choice, I like the guitar layers he uses on the tracks
8:11 when Glenn lets out his inner cat
It's funny, I've always understood the idea of having your own sound in terms of writing music or playing an instrument, but I never really realized the same applied with recording itself. I had always thought recording was just supposed to capture the performance and sound you already had, not create the sound. Anyway gotta love his routing setup. Must have been tons of work planning that.
These men speak in truths.
I got woke too early and this dosed me back to sleep. Good tones.

Glenn, I need your help! I love the IRs from Lancaster but how do I record and mix lead guitar? I guess I can reamp through a real cabinet but it's much more easier to do it at home, since my rehearsel space is 20 minutes by car from my home.
Where did he get that black paisley shirt? I want one.
He sure is a fun guy
To expand on sounding like yourself: Do you think it's better to start from a blank slate or a tone you already like, tweaking it further to make it different but still nice to listen to?
Hi Glenn, what is the hand held mic you are using? I know you addressed it in a video somewhere but I can't remember which video it was.
if you had just a Solid State Hotone Mojo Diamond , a Harley Benton 1x12 Vintage 30 and a Boss Metal Zone, dyou think you could get a descent tone from that? for Metal? :)
Ill Nino: Confession. Great album.
-question?- glenn, i've got some really hot mics, what are some good headphones that wont bleed while tracking?
Hey, Glenn! My best friend is determined to make it in music as a professional solo singer. The problem is that he is 28 and has been at this since 21. He does have a professional life and lives on his own, but I just don't think he is going to make it at this age, but I hope i'm wrong. At what age do you think it's too old to make a living as far making money as professional Indie singer? P.S. Thank you for all the years of entertainment you have provided us!

Why all the sti kers on the lonewolf amp ?
Yes, clarity. We can talk Black Sabbath all day, but Crimson is King!!
Diezel , Mesa or Bogner . Straight from his mouth 👌
Are those real Seville Classics racks? I keep all my amps up on those in my studio. Those are the good kind. Trying to get my tone with six amps or less so I can pretend my rig is portable.

Find your own sound by using tones from the top producer!
Back in the early 70s my brother had a huge very expensive system. Black Sabbath sounded terrible through it. They sounded great on a cheap system. It was just super distorted. Now if you put like Steely Dan on it it was super great.

Could've just sat that mic on a stand and skip all the handling noise, one person can be heard even when the mic's "pointing" at the other one ("pointing" 'cause it's an omni, iirc) :P

Koffie Verslaafde same. I play with the gain set just high enough to fatten up the tone. High gain doesn’t mean gain to the max. I use an overdrive too but gain is all the way down on it.

Damn you guys sure don't look old at all. Glenn has been losing weight and still has awesome hair as always. Bob is in good shape as well and no gray hairs. Sorry for the weird comment.
I agree with the too much gain thing. Even in doom/stoner... people are going too far and the tones are all terrible mostly. It’s like they forget to turn their amps up and the gain down... and with fuzz pedals... they don’t all have to be maxed!!! This stuff is fun as fuck at the end of the day.
Don't know any of the artist he mentioned. Are those local indie bands? :-P

@sparkplug1018

No idea why people don't. My whole thing in learning the guitar has been NOT being like everyone else. Just seems more fun that way.
Being original is good advice, but originality gets lost in the cracks because people flock to what they know and what's familiar. You're damned if you do. You're damned if you don't. just make music because you like it, and it's fun and it gives you something. Don't make it for anyone else, don't make it for money. Just make it because it's art and that alone is worth it. *shrug*
This lacks shots of the cabs, and Bob Marley jokes... UNSUBSCRIBED ^^
Plug-ins and modeling amps are cheats for amateurs. Build a good rig and learn how to use it. Computers are ruining EVERYTHING and kill any originality that could have been. How would we have ever gotten to experience the tones of Page, Hendrix, EVH etc. if they all had plug ins and modeling Amps? Trash all that digital crap, go analog and LEARN TO PLAY! 90% of anyones tone is in the fingers....
The ONLY time John 5 has a decent time is when he is not playing the plywood abominations known as the "Tele". The grating, honking, lifeless tone cuts through the heart of the mix. Terrible sounding guitars. He is a fantastic musician but that "Tele Tone" is fucking terrible.
