Monk Volcano less compression, focus more on pulling out any frequencies that are getting left out in the EQ. I’ve found that 2 tracks of gtrs panned 15L 15R usually gets it sounding nice

Hi Friend, somebody recently asked me "how many guitars is enough on either side to create a large guitar sound?" The best way to show you how to achieve a massive guitar sound is to show you the approaches of 3 different professional mixers/producers/engineers (including myself!). The first 2 techniques are from Mixing Rock with Ulrich Wild & Warren Huart. Ulrich and I both mix the same song in two different ways! I mix in a hybrid fashion, so you’ll get to see some of the EQ & Compression that I do inside of the box, but you also get to see the EQ & Compression that I do on my SSL using Pro Tools. Ulrich mixed the same song, entirely in-the-box, in Logic! The third excerpt is by a very good friend of mine, Mr. Bob Marlette. Bob is going to show us what he does to get massive guitar sounds. It’s really cool. It’s not just the mix process. It’s additional production to make the guitars sound absolutely massive!

  • 4 жыл бұрын

@@keegan6298 idk iam happy now i must say. some sounds simply suck and it is pure horror to make them fit into a mix. basically everything has to fit. Pickups, Amp, speaker and mic placement... i only use d.i. + helix native and a kemper now and IRs i trust. This gets the job done very fast. the right amount of poweramp saturation and the frequency distribution in front of the amp is crucial. the body rez pedal in front of an amp is a great way to dial in more or less mud ... and mud gets rid of fizz... more poweramp saturation will also get rid of fizz, it is hard to explain everything in a few sentences but idk maybe i make a video about everything i learned until now. Today i had to mix a song and i completely got rid of the recorded guitar even though it was a soldano, i only used the d.i. + helix native then. The best amp sucks if the cab, mic and mic placement and the instrument sucks, Today i only added a little low cut to my guitar and it is fat and sits in the mix ... that is not always the case but this combination worked very well

Great Video. I really enjoyed watching it. At some point I watched a tutorial on the topic of reverb. Unfortunately, I do not remember which one it was or who did it. It was very interesting, with examples of how to bring depth to the mix by using pre-delays and reverb and so on. There was mentioned that one should not use too diverse types of reverb in a song but look for the best suitable type and then keep it as main type for the track, unless it is a superficial effect reverb. Do you also have such considerations, for example, when you select the reverb that you put on the guitar track, or do you have a different opinion on this subject?

Thanks! That was very interesting. I always loved what John Porter & Johnny Marr did stacking guitars on Smiths songs. The acoustic guitars on Well I Wonder sound huge. I guess it has a lot to do with different inversions played in conjunction with the production.

Thanks for the videos! Love the content, love the community. Lately I have been experimenting with taking two separate mono takes, pan them hard left and right, then "bounce" them to their own stereo track. Then process them. Kind of like what you do with a four track to get more tracks. Am I wasting my time? I have some interesting results, especially when I use a stereo EQ and treat each side slightly different. Has anyone else tried this?

@@Producelikeapro , sorry to drudge up old comment but he's referring to 6:11 (decapitator)... Jonas, decapitator is a clipper (distortion / harmonics). I personally hear it as adding more variation/movement to the sound. Example. If the sound were totally clean and you did a palm mute, it would go dead silent after the strings were muted. But if it's got a TON of gain, the guitar would feedback (if a real amp in same room as guitarist). To my ear the decapitator in this instance add some of that 'gargling' around the sound making it seem more aggressive, kinda like a harley davidson at a stoplight before it revs up again. Just how I hear it. Also more color/movement in the upper harmonics. More texture, less like a digital plugin of an amp. Gritty.

I was surprised to see Warren EQ the first two set of guitars identically. Normally I would make them swap spaces in the frequency spectrum. That is, the frequencies I boost in one I cut in the other. I suppose he does that because he's got many more guitars in the song to get busy with frequency wise.

One of those down to earth Blue Peter " here's one I made earlier by getting down on my hands and knees with a toilet roll and some sticky backed plastic". The discrepancies between the left- and right-panned guitar parts that were recorded separately are what creates the stereo effect. If you just copy the same track twice and pan it -100 and +100 it will sound as if right in the middle but louder than if there was a single track in the middle. When we hear any natural sound it travels differently to each of our ears, and reflects from different materials under varying angles. All that results in that our brain receives slightly different signals from each ear, having differences in both timing and frequencies. That's what we try to recreate when we record the same part twice

Hi Warren, greetings from lovely Wiltshire. Sorry to hit you up with such a basic (and pretty dull) question, But! How do I get to the stage with this stuff that can actually follow the basics/jargon of what you are discussing. Not completely clueless but you are talking a way above my head, it's a journey and I want to get on with it.

@ Rob, watch some of Warren's early Video's, he takes you through the basics. I think there are 19 of them in a series "how to record". You may already know some of the info, but the rest should fill in the blanks you have. I've watched them all, and can follow this video with no problem, "Jargon" and all ;0)

Hello Warren. Did I see that correctly, that you have mounted a Fat Finger on the headstock of your Fender bass? I've always wondered if that would be useful and audible or if it would be in the field of audio esotericism. What do you think? Does it really affects the sound?

I have no idea how they managed it, but Neil Young proves you only need, at most, two guitars, while Pete Townshend proves you only need one (along with a world class bass player). I heard an audience recording of NY and Crazy Horse, and it sounded like there was some kind of far out calculus-type spherical conic section over the stadium. AWESOME!! Quite the phenomenon. Wish I had a clue.

I am seeing in your videos that there is always a sample sound accompanying the natural live instrument sound in the mix... for example, real snare and sample snare or a sample kick and the real kick and hey are blended. I think I have seen a guitar in this video too... when you say ''it doesn't sound natural because it is not natural.'' Is there a sampled guitar duplication of the live guitar performance too? How to create that? Or how to create to live and sample sounds and blend them, please? I am confused. I am only using bass guitar simulator drum simulator plugins at the moment and I play the guitar myself and the vocals ...so the guitars and the vocals are the only natural ones. Is it a must to have both the live and sampled sounds? :) Thank you!

I’m not sure if it’s a LUFs issue with the KZread video compression or not but where Ulrich Wild’s in-the-box mix starts, where he says this is what he ended up with, it sounds to me like there is digital clipping and just a much more overdriven sound. Like I said, maybe it’s just the way KZread’s compression codec processed the audio. Audio sound much better and sounds much more controlled in Warren’s hybrid mix. Was listening using the a set of wireless Beats headphones which usually sound pretty good, so I don’t think it was a problem with those. Bob Marlette's heavy in-the-box mix sounded very heavy but I could not here anything that sounded like digital clipping. Not trying to be mean or hypercritical just wondering if anyone else is noticing this or could it just be some issue with my monitoring hardware

2:23 please tell me anyone how to do that? Once inserting D-Reverb to any track it will be binded with it. What I mean if you pan it guitar track will be panned together with inserted reverb... How to seperate reverb effect related to specific recorded track and pan this reverb effect seperatly to opposite side of recorded guitar? How to get dedicated pan knob for inserted reverb only? So I can do what he did?

Use the reverb on a dedicated track,to which you send all guitar tracks. Send the as they are panned and just use a pan reverse/flip plugin on your fx track.

This is question i've had on my mind for a while and i don't know why i've never asked it. it's about time i ask it. When it comes to a band, you have the drummer, the guitarists and bass guitar and the vocalists. And when everyone is together playing and doing their part, the sound all comes together. so how does a bass guitar help a band's sound and how does it complete the sound though you don't hear it? i've always wondered that about the bass guitar is like that and what it's relevance in music, even though it's an instrument you don't hear when listening to the music from that band. seems like a such a dumb question, but i'm just so curious about it.

  • @matturner6890

The bass is (usually) there to fill out the main melody and the sound of the guitars themselves. Guitars are fundamentally less bassy than a bass guitar. You can tune a six string guitar very low and play the same notes as a bass, but it won't sound nearly as full and, well, bassy. So it kind of completes the sound of a rock ensemble. It is a part of what makes a six-string guitar sound heavy in a mix. They usually sound very thin with no bass track underneath.

I stumbled upon this video this morning and noticed that too. You’re probably tired of hearing this but the answer is use your ears. You’re never gonna have two mixers mix the same song the exact same way. It does NOT matter what fader you moved or frequency you tweaked as long as it sounds good. Now this was 5 years ago, so I hope you’re doing well out there and making improvements. The thing I didn’t like was when he said it’s unusual there was no compression. I RARELY ever put a compressor on distortion guitars because the distortion is basically doing the compression already. So take all these videos and apply them to your flow to get your own sound 🤘🏻🤘🏻
