Interesting how much the hats moved around in the image… a great example of how much easier one set up could make a mix vs another depending on the arrangement! Kick on that A-B is fantastic. Either A-B or recorderman in this specific sample would go long way with couple of individual mics. Fantastic work! 👍 Glynn Johns is a bit hyped method at this point. The truth is, it is VERY tricky technique in general. It’s cool and all until that one too loud hit on floor Tom or ride at the wrong moment. Yeah if lucky you might be able to edit/replace but that’s another subject…

OK, the "Glyn Johns" sounds the best. I am assuming that is a mic above&behind, and a mic over the toms on the drummers right side... There is no eq on the high end? why are the high hats quieter in the mix? I would think over head would get some extra HIGH END FREQS from the high hats! But maybe the other mic set ups are getting extra high end from the room, and the "Glyn Johns" set up is deceptively DIRECT on the DRUMS? IMHO

Love the Glynn Johns technique, but it does require a lot of discipline on the drummer to play consistently and not over work stuff. If the part is too busy and recorded that way it can be hellishly difficult to make it sit in a mix without the drums becoming the entire focus. But maybe that's what's needed.

I like the recorderman, XY and ORTF. The MS is kind of too thin. I found the AB weird, and i don't like the glyn johns.

@@bennokaiser698 yep i know ms can sounds great, just here it does not work well for me. I never liked GJ, and although i might like a lot of records with AB drums i don't like it when i ear it, i always think it sounds weird, not musical. BTW i like your sound and your acoustic's room. And thanks for your video. Schuss.

@@ludovicmorelon6771 With GJ I always have troubles with my cymbal setup. with MS and Recorderman I feel more like how I hear the drums, and so my dynamics, specially of the cymbals are more in balance with the drums. Liebe Grüsse Benno

If you are listening on a mono output, like a iPhone, you won't hear a big difference. On a stereo system you should! And if not, maybe audio is not for you. Liebe Grüsse Benno

XY is the most boring option you can have. MS has always sounded weird to me. ORTF is the most natural approach to stereo. AB is a classic great sound, but fiddly with cymbal height and level. Glyn Johns is punchy and Recorderman is to Glyn Johns what XY is to ORTF. Or that's my take anyway. Btw on the AB, Recorderman and Glyn Johns the stereo image is flipped.

You have a good ear, all toms are partially covered with felt on top. My problem with Glyn Johns is that I have to get rid of a cymbal. I'm a recorderman fan: lots of spread, SD and BD in the center. Did you check out this one, it's even better: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dX-Fk8qJqtCeiqg.html Liebe Grüsse Benno
