    Hi Friends! Chris Seefried first garnered national attention when Quincy Jones signed his band Gods Child, from NYC to Warner Brothers records. Their highest honor came when their single “Everybody’s 1”, charted in two Billboard charts simultaneously peaking at #18 on the Mainstream Rock chart and #25 on the Modern Rock chart.

    I think encouraging the artist is the most important thing! I remember my first vocal-recording in a real studio: the producer made me sing so different that i was really "shocked" but in a positive way! I learned a lot! And now i try to do the same. So much fun!!! Thx again for these absolutely great videos!!!

    Many thanks for another great studio tour! I think Jeff Buckley's "Grace" is one of the best albums of the 90s, maybe one of the best rock albums ever. It is one of those records which, altough I love it deeply, I can only listen to rarely, because it affects me so much emotionally that I'm almost afraid of listening to it. And what a great singer Jeff was.... such a shame he had to die so young. Many thanks, David

    Something totally different: I used your 'vocal thickening' trick on a choir last week. The choir was mic'ed up with 3 mics. Centre mic I treated like regular vocals (effect 100% left and right). Left mic I panned to 60% left and panned the effected signals to 100% and 30% left, same goes for the right mic. It worked like a charm! It now sounds like the choir had double the amount of people. I also added two trashed autotuned tracks to the pitched tracks, panned directly under the original signals, since it wasn't that good of a choir, trying to gain a bit of pitch, but only worked for the fullness. I used panned slapback and regular delay to give the left and right channels more direction.

  • @ebbulk

    @ebbulk

    8 жыл бұрын

    +ebbulk Btw, I set up the trick as a preset in my pitch shifter, so i have all bands on one track. I see you use several stereo tracks to apply the trick. Is that with a reason?

    Same story for me. I've played in bands for many years and had to learn to record basically out of necessity. I think it really helps to have experience playing music when learning engineering. I mostly record my own music and bands, but do work with other bands on occasion and I couldn't even imagine trying to relate with them without having my own long term experience making the music myself as well. Anyways, I just found your videos and I really enjoy them. I've been watching them all day while I work. I do web design during the day for the bread and play in bands, do my own solo type stuff, and record when I can!

    Warren, great video as always. Love the Mellotron (Moody Blues/Mike Pinder, The Beatles, King Crimson, Genesis, Black Sabbath, OMD, Oasis.....). Sounds like Chris was playing the "original master tapes". Very clear and almost "hi fi". As you of course know, a typical M400 (for example) back in the day usually had 5th generation tapes, becoming worse with use - but that (up until a certain point) is part of its charm, like the typical attack noise of each pinch roller catching the capstan - and the split second it takes until the tape becomes (kind of) stable (= with less "scrape flutter" and drift) LOL. There is one hardware digital Mellotron (sorry, forgot the name - it is German I remember) which has each sound in two versions: 1) "Studio" (= sampled original master tapes from the vaults); 2) "Mellotron" (= what actually came with the tape frames as played through a real Mellotron). Very likely the same with the one we see and hear here. Just wanted to share this. Anyway: great gear - great guy! Thanks again for sharing. P.S. I see a vintage console Hammond organ in the background. Sweet! Is that a model from the A-100 "family"?

    As usual... I LOVE your videos!!! So amazing to see how other people create amazing music and I can't tell you how much these videos have taught me!!! I wanted to suggest as a sidebar because I am such a fan of this producer..... If you're ever on the east coast.... (Bridgeport, Connecticut I believe) If you could pull your magical strings;) I would love to have you interview Peter Katis! He is the producer/engineer (if you're not already aware) of the national, jonsi (from sigur ros), interpol, local natives and all sorts of other great indie artists (and one of my personal heroes). Just a wishful suggestion! I know you are LA based and probably don't make it out there all that often, just wanted to let you know how thrilled I would be to hear both of you guys talk about music especially because of how you feel about independent artists.:) would be quite the epic episode for me!! haha thanks so much for what you do. 46:56 "It doesn't really produce lasting results." This is an excellent point and, sadly, a very accurate description of what is wrong with the today's music industry. I'm not going to do the namedropping thing but I don't think we'll talk about the modern pop hits in the way we talk about 60s or 70s equivalents. On a side note, I really like the guitar collection, especially the baritone and the faux tic-tac bass. :)

    Warren, I love the conversations you have about music with the people you interview. Chris mentioned using the Golden Age Pre on his vocal chain. I would love to know his thoughts on it. He must like it since he uses it. I'm interested in purchasing one and the price is right at about $360. It's based, like many mic pre's, on the Neve 1073. Thanks, Andy

  • @Producelikeapro

    @Producelikeapro

    Hi +FPofSTV Great question! I hear it's good, but you are right it's 'based' on a 1073. A lot of the components are different because of the price, the real transformers alone would cost the whole price! So my gut is it's a great affordable pre, but not to compare it directly with a 1073. I hope that helps? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    RIQ-Ric In Question The Rickenbacker guitar you showed in this video is a 620 modified with a Bigsby. The 600 series is comprised of a solid maple body with a maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, hence the heavy weight. The Bigsby will easily add 2 or 3 pounds. Without closely examining the guitar, it appears to be from the '70s or '80s with a "Jetglo" (black) finish.

    Hello ! "Marvellous" stuff as always :) You always said about Logic and ProTools but what about other DAW's like Ableton, FL Studio... Are Logic and PT are just greatest for recording/mixing "real" instruments and others haven't some options to do that ? Do you sometimes cooperate with rap/r&b/pop musicians/artists who need some beats ? Do you make beats for those artist or it's just a work for live instrument rock/blues etc. bands ? Best !

    They're both Yamahas but they don't share the same characteristics at all (except for appearance). HS8s are active monitors with a relatively flat frequency response. NS10s are passive monitors and are known for their "revealing" EQ curve. Their sound can also change based on the amplifier they're paired with. Very different from Yamaha's newer active line of monitors.

    If/when you listen to my zebra striped CD I sent you, you will hear I tend to, "strive for imperfection" in my work...which you eluded to on some very popular recordings. I love Queen, but Roxy Music's first couple of albums always appealed to me for the "off kilter" sound that Eno/Ferry produced. I tend to be more in my creative mind when I'm not striving for total perfection.

I know he doesn't do alot of live drum recordings, but what drums did he have stacked up in the corner, and did he talk to you BTS about how he likes to capture his live drum sounds?

    Hi +DesperadoStudios Thanks very much for your great comment I really appreciate it! I'm sure the Golden Age is fantastic! Especially for the money! It is however not really a 'clone' only because the original Neve components aren't cheap and inherently make up a huge part of the sound! I believe it's a wonderful piece of equipment and very affordable! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

    +Produce Like A Pro That makes sense! I've seen guys say that they like the flavor of the GAP, but that it doesn't really sound like a Neve. I'm sure since Chris is using it that it's a tasty piece of equipment nonetheless. Thank's for your insight and for your incredible channel. --Sören

As Warren mentioned, i also use it on vocals recorded in the control room. It always satisfies! Thanks for the comment. Best, Chris

    +Jim Gahagan Hey man, just a quick tip: Unless you buy the 500 series EQ you can't use it with anything else but inserted to the pre73! So you can't use just the EQ unless it's the 500 series one. It's on my list as well so I've done some research!

    I also think most of the algorithmic digital reverbs aren't the greatest. Usually need an EQ in front of them. The convolution plugins sound better or finding a space for some monitors and mics for a chamber.

    How much does an audio interface shape your tone?

    +rickenbacker40011 to give you a more direct answer, it depends on a lot of factors. Most/All Audio Interface have built in pre-amps at "Produce like a Pro" mentioned ! However this is a really general statement. Certain audio interfaces have been recognize for a very versatile pre-amp at a decent cost- think Scarelett 2i2 However once you start getting into higher end studio equipment is depends on whether you are going direct input into your audio interface and require pre-amps (Mic and audio interface), or if you are running through analog equipment before entereing your audio interface to convert it to a .wav file your computer can analyze. If you want to delve deeper into your question and you particular set-up/budget, I'll give you some better advice. I hope this helped.

    ***** hmm it does help. I guess to be more specific, within a general range, what % of your tone is your audio interface. Like oh its only 1-10% or 30-40% or since its the last stage of your tone it shapes it a whole lot etc, if that question is answerable :P

  • @travisvotour3159

    @travisvotour3159

    I don't believe you can define it in terms of percentage in a broad aspect. What microphone? What frequencies? Who is your vocalist? What instrument? I don't want you to actually answer all of these haha, I'm more making the point that you shouldn't overthink what an audio interface is at its CORE. It converts analog sound to something digital your computer can work work. I could get into technicals. But the point is when you think "audio interface" in a commercial sense there is a lot of categories to audio interfaces. Mixers with USB bus output. Interfaces like the Scarlett 2i2 with dedicated Mic pre amps... Honestly don't overthink gear to much. It is better to have affordable gear you can use well then expensive hear that you don't use to its fullest
