    Thanks for the heartfelt and informative interview you guys. knowledge passed on is not forgotten. Personal perspective based on experience, plus the the acknowledgment of a peer, gives one a foundation of ....truth. A base to evaluate critically. Like training ears. Or brain. I saw nothing fabricated or commercialized here. Just experience, knowledge, and raw emotion. Raw emotion, which is a motivator for artists doing what they have to do.

    Hey Warren, thanks so much for taking us into these fabulous studios and having the pro guests share their choice hardware and its choice spot in their workflow! Question: In future studio tours, can you have guests showcase their favorite/go-to in the box plug-ins? As you know very well, a choice plug-in is on the same playing field now a days as out board gear. Thanks again!

    The pink sunny day real estate album has a big place in my heart... the guitars are like a huge swarm of bees. Brad seems like a pretty precision sort of bloke and I think I'd trust his word on pretty much anything sonically...now I wanna try that RND 5060! Great interview!

    You are one of my heroes, you remind me of the greats of chess, you are accessible , honest, and have this potent advancing energy (i imagine) both personally and interactively. And to be this close to being in the room is greatly appreciated and truly magical. So, for what it is worth , and perhaps even to beat our poor ex-horse, Way to Go! You remind me to stay as near to music as possible as it is one of life's more perfect companions. Thanks for this wonderful and enlightening (from a nostalgic and recording historical point of view) glimpse down the road back into the haze of systems and technique leading us back to the interview, thanks very very enjoyable.the "train your ears" tip , as in an earlier video the "automate volume" tip this stuff is top tip gold. thanks again and again. Warren, thanks again for all that you do. It is so appreciated by this community, I don't see how you could understand how regarded and indebted we are to you. You mention about things (blog, etc.) coming up. If I could make a request, could you produce and include in the blog a pdf, excel spreadsheet, or whatever listing mikes that are generally used per instrument. I know that information is already there, it would be a time saver from watching all the videos again. But I understand time is tight. If you can't the community wants it, I get to work on it. Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you! Rob

    I love that, as Brad says "Rupert is on a roll" (54:10) a squirrel rolls by the window, nods his head in agreement as if to say ,"totally, dudes," and rolls past. : D Also Brad sagely addressing the human ego at the end of the interview, mammalian need for validation, comparing it to wolf pack social stratification/dominance, and then gracefully moving past into the wisdom of abandoning cynicism and mean-spiritedness. Fantastic interview. (Plus the MJUC props.) Cheers mates.

    I was working at a studio in the SF Bay Area and Brad was in doing a record. He asked me to make a dupe of a DAT master for him and it was obviously work he had just completed prior to the sessions he was doing there that week. What I heard as it played down gave me a real wakeup call. It was Sunny Day Real Estate's LP2 or Pink album. It's a fantastic work and showcases great songs and a realistic capture of a band. One of my all time faves. Great work Brad. It's awesome to see you here

    The common thread through all these great interviews is get it sounding the way you want when you first record it. For the sake of "inspiration" I would just hit record. Then I would spend hours trying to fix what I thought was "magical". Spending the extra 10 minutes to move the mic or setup some EQ or compression going in makes mixing much easier and FUN!

    As always, very interesting interview. If you're ever in Tampa, I suggest you take a look at Morrisound Studio. It's pretty much ground zero for explosion of the death metal scene in Florida. A few years ago I drove all the way there just to take a picture of myself in front of the sign, one of the producer came out and offered me a tour. Since then I love watching studio tours. Also in Florida legend Erik Rutan at Mana Recording Studios in St.Petersburg. There's also Devin Townsend in Vancouver that would be a great interviewee.

    Thanks Warren. This is beautiful... Does Brad maybe mean Sound Designer rather than Sound Tools? We did that in 1994-ish. A mixture of 1/4" tape, 2" tape, stereo Sound Designer II and black-and-white Cubase. I did a voiceover session on old Cubase in 1994 - disastrous :( DAT backups though! Thank Gawwwwd for Pro Tools. Also I love the fact your ears pricked up at the mention of Jesus Lizard. *digs out JL vinyl*

  • @princetonaudio
    @princetonaudio8 жыл бұрын

    The NEVE Portico 2 and the 5052's are similar with the 5052's having a little more gain, but the Portico 2 being a complete channel strip including comp, de-esser, mic pre, x-former, and texture/silk etc. What would be cool is if Brad would consider doing a comparison between the homogenous NEVE Portico 2, vs his heterogenous 5052's and his classic outboard gear. I could provide the Portico 2's for @two weeks if you like. I could also throw in a Bricasti M7 which should bring the two tracks up to print quality. What I'm trying to figure out if there's a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) channel strip that solves most recording challenges, for almost the same price as a DYI solution. --thx scotty--

    I am shocked that he has not been able to find a service tech for that Telefunken machine. I thought all the electronic wizards were in the LA area. Especially in the musical gear industry. Great video as always Warren. Always interesting.

    I love what he says about tape... I love the idea of learning to use a tape machine, but until now I think I just wanted one so I can say "Hey ya know I used tape right??"Its an insecurity thing. My recordings are sounding better and better in the box, and they have a 'cool factor' all their own now. 2 years ago I wanted tape bc it's cool "it would've been an excuse for poor recording technique..). Now I want tape bc of the effects and techniques that I 'need' it for. More and more I'm learning that experimentation is just doing without knowing what youre doing. That's beautiful, but in the end... people want to listen to music. Most people don't know that old songs were recorded to tape- they just listen. And today??? People... still.. just listen. You can be HIP without tape.

    Hey Warren, I was just wondering. In all these studio's where they have loads of outboard gear everywhere. how is it possible to mix? Because you are constantly moving out of the sweet spot and sometimes not even in front of the speakers at all. I noticed on the Steve Vai studio he had gear waaay at the side of the room like eq. Is it really a matter of changing a knob then running to the speakers :P ( I've never worked in a real studio before :( as much as I dream I could. ) Thanks so much again for these great videos!

    Hey Warren. Watching your channel I tried to put together a channel strip. I just got a dbx 160 and I was wondering what ballpark settings are good for vocals and bass (in front of audio device). Any tips on any sweet spots with this compressor would be appreciated. What would be subtle moderate and heavily compressed? What chain is best when I hook them up in my rack? I have tube pre, comp, para eq, gate delay, reverb. I presume gate goes before reverb and delay right? Do I put tube pre after or before the compressor etc? Thanks!!

    An idea for you too. I often hear from some top mixers. " I listen to my mixes in the car/on my phone/ crappy pc speakers, even in a restaurant". But there's not one video out there showing them doing it. and changing the mix in one way or another from doing such things. Do you do this? and if so what are you listening for? like the snare doesn't smack through on a pc speaker? but sounds great on your monitors. how do you compensate? :) thanks Dale.

    Hi +Dynasty UK great question! I listen on other sources for details. There can be small EQ and volume adjustments that are more apparent on other systems. I will write down or make a mental note of these things and then go back to the studio and make the necessary adjustments, does that all make sense? Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Great interview as always Warren, it's fantastic (and fantastic) that you do this for us :) you talk ear training at the beginning, and I don't know if you know this, but there's marvelous software called TrainYourEars EQ Edition (www.trainyourears.com) which is ear training for engineers and producers. The idea is super simple - you run threw it a song from your disk or even Spotify, and it will randomly change something in EQ, it may attenuate 1kHz for 3dB for example, and you have to ask what it did only by ear. It's absolutely amazing, I highly recommend it for everyone :)

    Old time engineers and mixers have gotten lazy i think. It's like they will try so many things in order to comfort themselves that it still sounds as good as it used too. It's like the Rolling Stones 1970 compared to the Rolling Stone 2017. I think we should start listening to the guys who are just starting now rather than the old made it "I can't be arsed with analogue because its too much hard work" engineers and mixers of today. I think most upcoming producers today want that analogue old skool sound not only because if how it sounds because of the decisions that it forces you to make. Digital has given a whole generation of bands that are terrified of recording live so they kill all spirit through wanting perfection. Any thing that makes you make decisions and move on will always be more creative because you move on your feet. Thats the true beauty of analogue.

  • @citizennobody5518
    @citizennobody55187 жыл бұрын

    This whole thing with old timers debating the merits of tape and digital is getting boring. As someone that grew up making music on a fostex 4 track and then moved to digital. There is no doubt that analogue sounds better and its not just about going to tape its about being forced to make choices, its about building the sound into the recording rather than building the sound into the sound after it has been recorded. Its a bullshit argument that means nothing. Anyone that says analogue doesn't sound better than digital is either not listening or lying.
