I've always said that Black Sabbath were like Old Testament prophets screaming about the end of the world. The thing is, they were a band for the people, and a lot of their music has something for everyone. If you don't like the message in After Forever? Check out God is Dead. If you're not a fan of drugs, like in Sweet Leaf, check out Hand of Doom which speaks about the dangers of drugs. You don't like the occult bent of songs like Black Sabbath? Maybe you'd dig the Sci-fi elements of Into the Void or Iron Man. You don't like little relatively filler songs like Tomorrow's Dream or Am I Going Insane? Dig on War Pigs, or Spiral Architect. You like fast, check out Symptom of the Universe. You like slow, check out the same song and wait about four minutes! You don't like Ozzy? Check out Dio. You don't like Dio, check out Tony Martin. You don't like Sabbath? You just haven't listened to enough.

Growing up, I had listened to this song probably thousands of times. Loved it. Then, that one time... that line "Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say if they knew you believed in God above"..... it hit me between the eyes like a ton of bricks... I cared more about what my friends thought of me than I did what God thought of me. One of the key moments of the journey God lead me through to salvation.

@Robert Vaughn this song, Satan falls in love with a human woman and tries to seduce her. He turns out to be very charming and the early lyrics are quite poetic. >> The title refers to drummer Bill Ward's beard. The band called him "Nibby" because they thought it looked like the nib on the end of a pen (Ozzy came up with the nickname when he on acid and thought Geezer Butler was turning into a fountain pen). Says Butler: Originally it was Nib, which was Bill's beard. When I wrote N.I.B., I couldn't think of a title for the song, so I just called it Nib, after Bill's beard. To make it more intriguing I put punctuation marks in there to make it N.I.B. By the time it got to America, they translated it to Nativity In Black.>>

Geezer Butler has said about the lyrics: ”A lot of it was because of the situation in Northern Ireland at the time. There were a lot of religious troubles between the Protestants against the Catholics. I was brought up strictly Catholic and I guess I was naive in thinking that religion shouldn’t be fought over. I always felt that God and Jesus wanted us to love each other. It was just a bad time in Northern Ireland, setting bombs off in England and such. We all believed in Jesus - and yet people were killing each other over it. To me it was just ridiculous. I thought that if God could see us killing each other in his name, he’d be disgusted.”

Anybody that calls Black Sabbath satanic just hasn't listened to the songs. Even the songs from the point of view of Satan are about love and deceit. Humans being weak and susceptible to evil trickery. Ozzy routinely sounds terrified of the Devil when he sings about it. Which is a very Christian perspective.

What takes Tony Iommi to the next level is the fact that on his last day at his factory job he sliced the tips of 2 or 3 of his fingers off. Instead of quitting he made plastic tips to go over the ends of his fingers. He plays like that to this day.

I would tell them Black Sabbath was a Christian band and play them "After Forever" and "War Pigs". I also had an art book of Gothic christian paintings to show them. That reminded me of the video you reacted to that scared Sori, but you explained that the imagery was Orthodox Christian. Anyway, play more Sabbath and have a great New Year. ED

when you say "raised Catholic" you mean "nominally Catholic, at best," right? Bill was the most superstitious and Geezer probably the most religious but even he had quit going to mass in his teens. Regardless, being raised in the western world it's pretty much a given that you'll have been associated with a christian religion as a child being "raised in a religion" means nothing unless you choose to continue letting religious beliefs continue to influence your decisions later in life.

I remember blasting this while I was pulling into Heavenly Doughnuts and some old dude was like "you need to save your soul" the Irony still makes me laugh to this day. So I saw he was in his car (he parked next to me) and broke out Slayer's South of Heaven and kind of did a devil horns on the side of my head in a mocking way. The look on his face was priceless. lol.

Finally!!! Love you guys. I actually used the lyrics during a bible study with our youth group. Matched up with biblical texts then played the song. We had 20 very sheltered church kids banging heads and educated at the same time.

1989.. Cozy Powell went to become drummer and producer for Black Sabbath.. again.. he went to Toni's house and just said: "I have some ideas..".. Toni went to a cupboard, took out like 5 big shoppingbags full of cassesstes.. all having like 30 riffs onthem..unused.. Cozy said: "Well Toon..you should open a shop: : Toni Riffs"

Tony FN Iommi the all time riff master GOAT. He'd put more badass riffs in one song than most metal bands/guitarists create in a career.

Have you ever seen the film "Ghost"? The white angels and the black angels are on the same side. At your time if death, you will know if you have led a good or bad life, because of the colour of the angels. The white angels will look after you, whilst the black angels will drag you off and treat you accordingly. When it's your time to go, what colour angels would you want to greet you?

This is the second time I’ve watched this video. It shocks me that Vin would say the lyrics were to simplistic for him. As a Christian he should know that salvation thru Jesus Christ was designed to be simple so that everyone could be saved.

Sabbath wrote songs about the things they saw and felt most of the lyrics were written by Terry geezer butler and the topics were what they saw and dealt with growing up during that time period coming from a factory town and most of them poor they created the sound of sabbath themselves and you would be surprised to find Tony iommi cites his influences as the shadows and jango Reinhardt . They were a blues and jazz based band who discovered their sound by creating it using pioneering techniques and a diy attitude . Especially after Tony’s accident he had to completely change the way he played guitar and that helped shaped the sabbath sound .
