Dio: I think, probably, a part of the song "Heaven And Hell": "the world is full of kings and queens who blind your eyes and steal your dreams, it’s Heaven and Hell", because to me that speaks about what happens to musicians. - Interview, September 2005, dmme.net/interviews/dio2.html

Totally right! On Live Evil, Dio was singing Ozzy's Black Sabbath.. it didn't fit!(my own opinion and perspective) At the time of Dio's last days touring with Black Sabbath, They changed the name of the band to Heaven and Hell, I still don't know if it was as a tribute to Ronnie James Dio in life. For all they'd played was all Dio's era with Black Sabbath.

That happened for 2 reasons 1. Dio didn't like singing Ozzy era songs. Felt they were beneath him 2. Ozzy and Tony Iommi went to court over the Sabbath name. Tony believed it was his since he was the only original member throughout every version of Sabbath. Ozzy felt it belongs to all 4 original members.

This is cool! Love Tony Iommi, but as fan of Black Sabbath I would give it to Ozzy. At the end of all things, it usually happens, when a band reaches fame and they become rich on money, there are always these kind of disputes, I've seen this in a lot on break ups and on the case of Black Sabbath the only fair thing was to split it in four parts. They were epic and unique for their time. All of them four!

Dio is the superior vocalist. Very few heavy metal singers can compare to his grasp of using the human voice for harmonic melody. With that said, Ozzy has a presence to his voice, and it is completely unique. As Vin said, it is amazing that Sabbaths sound changed so much just from the switch from Ozzy to Dio. It's no surprise that either one of them don't want to sing songs from the others era, because the songs don't fit each others style.

Greatest metal singer ever!!! I'll give you my Dio story. I "actually" was lucky enough to meet him a few times. The first time was in 1993 when he was in Sabbath for the 2nd time. There was only a few of us standing outside. he said Hello and singed what ever we had. It was cool. It was a theater sized show, so it was just at the start of the hard times for metal. 2nd time I met him It was 2 years later (Strange highways tour, one of my favorite albums from him) There were quite a few of us in outside at a larger club maybe 1/3 capacity of a theater (this gut sold out arenas in the 80s). He set up in one of the empty trailers with a table and chair and let every on in a few at a time and singed everyone stuff.I was the last to get in and get an autograph, Dio looks at me and says "Ah, your truly the last in line". That always will be a fond memory. i met him one more time at the same club on the next tour. Thia time he just stood outside with us he spent a half hour talking to us and singing autographs. Even at the lowest point in his career he was humble nice and as always good to his fans.

Black Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio...I am ready for this one...I predict you will like Dio. Ronnie is the ultimate metal singer. On top of that Dio was the best to the fans...always had time for them, always made the fans feel special. His death was a big loss to the metal community. It is okay to say Ronnie is brilliant...he is widely regarded as one of the (if not the best) technically great metal singers.

My Dio story. I met him in the late 80s after a concert in California. Ronnie was famous for talking to every last fan that waited for him after shows. We got to talking and it came up that I was from Chicago, well Ronnie was a huge Chicago Bears fan so we talked Bears for a few minutes. Well maybe 3 years later I got a chance to meet him again...he immediately recognized me and was like "Chicago!"...I could not believe that this guy who probably meets thousands upon thousands of people every year remembered me. We picked up our conversation right from where we left off years earlier. If you listen to some of the tributes/remembrances from other metal personalities you will find Dio always counseled others to be great to their fans. With Dio it was always about you - he truly was a giver. Come to find out he also had like a perfect recall memory and so many had similar experiences with him where he remembered what would seem to be trivial things from conversations years earlier.

One of my favorite reactions you guys have done. Amazing song. One of the top metal songs all time for me and a definite 10 out of 10. I remember reading a interview with Ronnie at one point where he talked about the meaning of the whole bit about the "Dancer" but I can't recall what the deal was. Dio was incredible live. A man small in stature but positively massive in voice. I saw him at an incredible live so in the DC area with Maiden and Motorhead. One hell of a lineup to be sure. Even as Dio was slowly and probably painfully dying of cancer the dude never stopped taking time to meet with his fans. He had a reputation for being of the sweetest guys in metal. He is sorely, sorely missed. Also a big thanks to you and Underground Metal Elitist for making me finally decide to start doing reactions/breakdowns of my own. My first one went up today. I don't think I would have done it if not for you guys so huge thanks!

Robert Knight in this very comment section talked about this: ""You've got to bleed for the dancer", is in reference to an earlier line, "love can be seen as the answer, but nobody bleeds for the dancer". Basically I always heard it as some people will preach love, but as soon as it becomes difficult on them, they'll abandon all sense of "morality". They only care about others, in-so-much-as it doesn't take away from what they have." Shiva, aka the universe is also called "the great dancer". Dio was into various religious iconography like that. So Dio probably meant the universe, in other words, people in need. If you don't bleed for them you won't have any real meaning in your life.

The charity in Dio's name is a cancer foundation as he died from cancer. I absolutely love this track, the album is stunning also. Ronnie did not believe in heaven nor hell, he said in an interview that he believes that heaven and hell is here on earth, saying that we effectively make our own heaven and we make our own hell. Which as an atheist I like, it is an interesting perspective and way of looking at life.

Dio's vocals are a delight to listen to in two ways. The range of the notes his voice can reach is amazing on its own. On the other hand (and that is what like the most), his voice changes colors throughout his songs in such ways, it's like listening to a story your granfather tells you. He delivers drama. One of the reasons that make him such a good performer and why people love him (RIP... try Stargazer from Rainbow)

+Vinand Sori Ronald James Padavona (July 10, 1942 - May 16, 2010), known professionally as Ronnie James Dio or simply Dio, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He fronted and/or founded numerous groups including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio, and Heaven & Hell. He is credited with popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture in metal culture and was known for his medieval-themed lyrics. *Ronnie James Dio was known for popularizing the sign of the horns in heavy metal. He claimed his Italian grandmother used it to ward off the evil eye (which is known in Southern Italy as malocchio). Dio began using the sign soon after joining the metal band Black Sabbath in 1979*

Dio is a legend, such a powerful voice and every word he sings you hear crystal clear. For myself, Dio, Halford and Dickinson are the great singers of metal, powerhouses yes, but also capable of a beautiful melodic form of singing. Ozzy is a legendary frontman due to his great energy particularly live and he is actually a good vocalist, although I think his best work is his solo stuff with his own band. Ozzy and Black Sabbath go together better as a band than Dio and Black Sabbath overall, but Heaven and Hell is one of the best Black Sabbath songs period. Definitely worth checking out some more Dio; in any form- Rainbow, Dio or Black Sabbath.

My most memorable concert experience was an Iron Maiden concert shortly after Ronnie had passed away. Bruce Dickinson dedicated Maiden's "Blood Brothers" to the memory of Dio and thousands upon thousands chanted "Dio, Dio, Dio" for minutes on end. It was a surreal, touching show of unity for one of the forefathers of the Metal community. This is why I love the Metal concert experience so much: the sense of camaraderie between like-minded individuals is unlike anything I've ever experienced.

When this album was recorded, Ronnie Dio had already been a professional musician for 21 years. His first record was in 1959. Musically, Dio Sabbath has very little in common with Ozzy Sabbath, but it does have a lot in common with Rainbow, Ronnie's previous band (with Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple).

Ronnie James Dio arguably the best singer and songwriter in metal history, he died of stomach cancer in 2010, the greatest loss in metal history as well, he changed Black Sabbath for the better and the albums he did with Black Sabbath ran circles around Ozzy era Sabbath imho. Dio solo albums are epic as well, check out Dio Don't Talk To Strangers from Holy Diver and Egypt (The Chains Are On) from The Last In Line and Voodoo from the Mob Rules album. I has the great pleasure of seeing Ronnie James Dio perform with Black Sabbath and Dio (The Band) and those performances changed my life for the better. Definitely do more Ronnie James Dio reactions you'll love it. Also Ronnie James Dio was in the band Rainbow, Gates Of Babylon or Stargazer are ones you need to review/react to. Great job Vin and Sori!!!! 🤘🤘

We meet in LA at a Harley dealership do a massive group ride to a park where lots of famous stars play Ronie's songs. They do silent auctions etc.. they raise the money for cancer. ozzy did write for sabbath, 99.9% of songs from their albums with ozzy actually have all 4 members credited as writers. ozzy used too much drugs and alcohol and it was getting out of hand. sharon, who became his wife soon after this, was working for his manager at the time, and i think it was her who tried to save his life by getting him out of the band. then he pursued solo career, eventually coming back to sabbath for reunions and finally came back for good to record one last studio album with sabbath. when ozzy left, few amazing vocalists went through band, but no one ever filled ozzy's shoes. at least for me. dio is considered as one of the godfathers of metal, and he is, but ozzy just had the most fitting vocals for sabbath's music. dio came just after ozzy and he did the best job in post-ozzy sabbath era, for sure. they moved a little bit towards more classic heavy metal, and dio's iconic vocals helped a lot. rip dio.

This was my first introduction to Sabbath when I was young. I only knew Ozzy as a solo artist. I didnt discover his era of the band until after. Everyone has their choice. To me, Dio era will always mean more to me. So much more energy and Dio's vocal is beyond what Ozzy could ever acheive. Musician was stepped up a notch and a half. But again, to each their own. Great review and great converstaion afterward.

The thing about this song is that it is part of the album Heaven and Hell. This song does stand up very well in it of itself however, this song is part of an album that is heard best when listened to as a whole.... Many metal albums from the 70's and 80's were like that. Now days, bands write songs... They used to write albums.

Ozzy's "whinyness" in his voice is kind of his trademark. It's not for everybody, I suppose. But Dio is the superior singer in pretty much every aspect. There's not even a discussion about it. He's one of the alltime greats of rock/metal vocalists. You might want to check out his earlier work in Rainbow (Stargazer) or his Solo stuff (Rainbow in the Dark, Don't Talk to Strangers). He was also an extremely interesting perosn. There's a short interview of him on youtube where he talks about the messianic meaning of his well known song Holy Diver and his stuggle with Catholicism. Might be an interesting bit of footage for you guys :)

Dio resurrected this band TWICE. Now, granted that there would be no Black Sabbath without Ozzy and vice versa, let us move on to this Chapter of Black Sabbath...Dio was a far superior vocalist and wrote lyrics, which bassist Geezer Butler covered in the Ozzy era. Also, Ronnie pushed the rest of the band (in a subtle, yet commanding way) to higher levels of musicianship. The argument of Ozzy after departing Sabbath and OWNING the metal genre is completely attributed to Randy Rhoads, a true godsend who died in a tragic, horrific plane crash. Randy was the 1st true Badass metal guitarist....he died in 1982. Now, back to Heaven and Hell (album) This album put Black Sabbath back in the spotlight, head and shoulders above the rest, back in 1980, anyway. The lyrics are outstanding, as were Geezer's in the Ozzy days. Dio was a powerhouse and his two Sabbath albums (Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules) had something magical about them. After his departure, Tony Iommi took full control of Black Sabbath (always did, really) and there were a flurry of vocalists at the helm, and they all had their moments of glory, but, ultimately, in 1992 Ronnie returned, again, showing the kids how the big boys do it. The album was called Dehumanizer with tracks like Computer God, and even a song on the Wayne's World soundtrack. From a religious standpoint, you can take a song like Computer God any way you like. The point is, after so many decades later, the music is still relevant, and is prophetic, also. Sorry for the long post but I just felt compelled to shed some light on the subject. Cheers!
