    The best part about this was that the actors playing the soldiers were not told of the maority of the skit and what would be said so the laughter and them trying NOT to laugh, is all real.

    It was banned in my mum’s home town in Aberystwyth. Decades later, the actress who played Brian’s girlfriend became the town mayor. They had a triumphant screening of the film in the local cinema and threw a massive party - which Michael Palin and Terry Jones attended. Everyone had a blast. And the funny thing? They found out the film had never actually been banned: the miserable sod behind it forgot to file the paperwork.

    When the first Roman soldier was taken away, that was Brian cue to crawl away but he missed this cue. From " I will not have my friend ridiculed by the common soldiery" was completely improvised by the guy playing the Roman Governer. That little nod at 4:07 was a nod to the director after signalling to him to keep going with the scene even though they were off script. That's why the rest of the actors playing the soldiers were ready trying hard to hold their laughters, those were real. Thankfully, he added it in the final edit of the film.

    This film caused quite a stir when it came out with some members of the church up in arms saying how blasphemous it was, it was even banned in some towns - the actress that played Judith (the women who ran in and asked for Brian to be released) became mayor of one town that had banned the film, her first task was to remove that ban.

But it get's better: On Live US TV.... they told John Cleese/Michael Palin/Erice Idle (Can't remember who exactly) that some backwater state of the USA had lifted its statewide-wide-ban of Life Of Brian beiing shown in cinemas. After something like 25 years after its release to which.... One of the above said: "Is nothing sacred?" Classic. That is British Humour. We get it.

    John Cleese breaking isn't that rare. In the "witch village" scene in _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ , watch him as the peasant just after he slaps Eric Idle's arm and shushes him (after Idle yells "More witches!"). He then turns his head over his right shoulder right before the cut to try to hide that he has lost it and has a full-on grin.

    As someone from the UK I always find it very odd that others from other places in the world don’t know Monty Python movies and in particular Life of Brian, arguably their greatest movie. It’s hilarious from start to finish. The humour is very British, so if you’re from farther afield, it may be difficult to get the gist in the beginning but you’ll catch on quickly. It is very cleverly written by the Python team and the performances are great. A classic. The song at the end is brilliant....I won’t spoil it for you. P.S. check out Monty Python and the Holy Grail too!! Another classic.

    This movie is hilarious from start to finish. I don’t know if you have already seen their movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I can recommend them both. To give you an example of their unique sense of humor: at the beginning of The Holy Grail you hear the sound of a horse riding. Then you see someone running with a guy behind him banging two halves of a coconut together. It is a brilliant joke that they thought of, just because they were on a tight budget, so they could not afford real horses.

    Graham Chapmen had THE best poker face when it came to delivering lines like this. And even here you can see him just faintly begin to crack under the moment but he reeled it all in again. Apparently the whole cast was told that if they cracked and laughed they wouldnt get paid. So thats why they are all keeping it in so tightly, naturally they knew no one would last but it would make the scene all the more better as they each found other methods to try not to laugh.

    It was the Bishop of Southwark, Mervyn Stockwood, who with Malcolm Muggeridge debated the movie with the Python team - having got to the movie showing late, they’d missed the opening scene which makes it plain that Brian is not Jesus. This led to the hilarious parody debate on Not the Nine O’Clock News about the movie “The General Synod’s Life of Christ” - “This Jesus Christ bloke is clearly a parody of the Comic Messiah himself, Our Lord John Cleese - he’s even got the same initials, for God’s sake!”.

    If you enjoy wordplay with British accents one that's often seen as an exemplar of the genre is definitely the Four Candles sketch by the Two Ronnies. Ronnie Barker was an unparalleled wordsmith and the things he does with them always bring a smile to my face. Mastermind is another great one from them as it's one you as the audience have to concentrate on as well (Specialist subject - answering the question previous to the one just asked.)

    My favorite part of the film is where Brian is chased up a tower under and falls off - into an alien spaceship that is being pursued by alien, but hostile, spaceship. The whole scene is just so random and quick.

  • @TheDutchGhost

    @TheDutchGhost

    If I remember correctly, that scene was inserted as the Python gang did not have any idea how else Brian would escape from the Roman palace or that tower. As Star Wars was rather popular at the time they decided to go for a scene in which Brian accidentally falls into a passing spaceship. It is really random, it comes out of nowhere and then quickly disappears again and no one even mentions it.

    This movie came out when I was in high school, and there was MAD controversy because people who HAD NOT SEEN IT got their knickers in a twist because they THOUGHT it was making fun of the Lord Jesus. I was one of the few kids whose parents let them watch it, and I became really popular for a time telling other kids about the film. Eventually, some of them snuck off to see it anyway, then enough people also watched it, and the fervor died down. It remains one of my favorite films.

    Monty Python's had a program that was skits throughout, but this is from a full length movie, which is hilarious from start to finish, as is their movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Funny note, I am from Montreal, Canada, and used to watch this show from an American Public TV Station that used to play it very late Friday nights. And it was the last show to air, and then they would sign off for the night (something all tv stations did back then.) What was funny, was that I would watch an hour of the funniest, silliest television, and the closing song (also hilarious), which was immediately followed by the announcement : "This has been brought to you by Vermont Educational TV." which made me laugh as hard as the show had. Every week, without fail. Just imagine hearing that right after watching the Lumber Jack song/skit. Almost wet myself a few times.
