As much attention as Tony's guitar gets in this, for me the real heart of this song is Geezer's whimsical bass line.

Totally agree. If it wasn't for Geezers hard groove style, Black Sabbath would've been just another 70's guitar group. They certainly wouldn't have been the founders of heavy metal they're credited for today.

“Fairies Wear Boots” was loosely based on a real, incredibly violent fight the band got into with a group of skinheads after a gig in the north of England (the slur “fairy” was meant to emasculate their attackers, who wore boots)

Its morphed , more intelligent , even to me there re more Uriah heep and even Sweet heavy stuff in rythm section on steroids and so on than sabbath direct inspiration in them . There re influences of Sabbath , as well than Budgie , trapeze or Priest musically . But its morphed into something else . Deep Purple too . There re no Rip off of Black sabbath in Satan jokers for example , as note for nore riff . They were influenced , but they morphed , and they were influenced by Purple, Priest , Magma and mahavishnu orchestra . They re kind of originator of what we called Heavy fusion metal 15 years later . I mean in metallica , its Too obvious . Its not like they took little bits . They took big things in the songs , that catch the hear . Mercyful fate , Satan Jokers , and ..watchtower , even Celtic frost . My all time favorite line in a Sabbath song, the doctor said "Son son you've gone too far, cause smoking and tripping is call that you do..." And Ozzy's response was mine, "Yeahhhhhh." Black Sabbath and Deep Purple are the two innovative bands who were pioneers of heavy metal. You listened to Child In Time from Deep Purple. It is also from 1970. The whole Deep Purple In Rock album is for me the first heavy metal album. Listen to Hard Lovin’ Man and Flight of the Bat. Early speed metal. These are the two guitarists with the biggest contribution of modern metal. Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore. Lars Ulrich started playing drums because he was at a Deep Purple show in Copenhagen in 1972. He was 9. Bruce Dickinson’s idol as a singer is Ian Gillan from Deep Purple. But Sabbath embraced the name metal amd Purple said that when they started their as no such thing as metal. Mistake, their contribution to metal is so underrated. Iommi has a full use of his hands. He got an accident when he was working in a factory and a machine cut the skin of his fingertips. To be able to play he did some sobers for his fingertips out of clay by himself. A great guitarist is an innovator and songwriter, not a great technician.

I highly recommend the Cosmo’s Factory album, from 1970, which is one of those perfect albums that doesnt have a single weak track, and frankly, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a greatest hits album! Best tracks are Ramble Tamble, Run Through The Jungle, Who’ll Stop The Rain, Long As I Can See The Light, their cover of Before You Accuse Me and their truly EPIC version of Heard It Through The Grapevine!

In the last day of his job, Toni lost the top of two fingers. For us mortals that would be the end of our guitar playing career. For Toni, he crafted some false finger tips, used lighter strings, down tuned and invented a completely new heavy sound. In some ways you could say his accident was kind of a blessing and it made Toni invent this sound which we all love. Can you imagine the drive he must have. It is a lesson for us all. In every set back, it is how you respond to it that is important. Even the set backs can be seen as opportunities.

The reason Iommi's finger issues are important to his sound is that due to losing his fingertips on his fret hand and using false fingertips, is that he had no choice to loosen his strings and play an octave lower in general, therefore creating a much different sound which is now commonly achieved through whatever gear and effects players choose.

To understand the song you need to understand 1970s Birmingham. There were several youth gangs, one of them were the skinheads, sometimes called fairies by the others, they were identified by their shaved bald heads and the heavy industrial boots they wore, hence the song title Fairies Wear Boots.

Thank you so much, this is one of my top 5 favs from Sabbath. My favorite band. If you havent already, may I suggest, Children of the Grave, Hand of Doom, and Lord of This World. All gloomy and doomy tunes but deal with drug addiction, war and peace and the battles of good and evil for our souls. Love watching you two over the past year.

I do believe that the Skinheads are Boot wearing Fairies being referenced. More specifically the Dr. Martin's Boots was part of their style uniform. I do believe that a few people have commented on the Skinhead of the UK and the version that emerged later in the US cannot be compared to be the same thing, actually far from it. The Original UK Skinhead group spawned from the poor working class neighborhoods in London which had been integrated with a large amount of people that migrated to London West Indies (primarily Jamaica) to rebuild London after WW2. By the time the 60’s came around the music that was coming from Jamaica began to change to a up-tempo accented bolder style which was SKA music that also had a rebellious streak against the system more lyrically rebellious element which began to attract the poor white working class kids that have been integrated with the 1st generation of Jamaican immigrants. They began to adopt SKA music and the close cut haircuts of the Jamaican youth as their own . And that became the birth of Skinheads. I did not believe it until Isaw these two documentaries at the links below. And this is the exact time period that Black Sabbath were making their debut. There a two real good BBC Documentaries that present the whole skinheads and reggae/ska music story. Skinhead - BBC Documentary kzread.info/dash/bejne/pJl7usNspsrLdpc.html Reggae Britania- BBC Documentary (And Possible the best documentary on the influence that SKA/Reggae had on entire British Music scene and surprisingly enough on Punk music) kzread.info/dash/bejne/pHeB1LGbk5PFcaQ.html .............................................................
