When you actually think of Black Sabbath (when I say Black Sabbath, I am referring to the first six albums) as a protest band, it changes things. That is precisely what they were.

Geezer Butler has said about the lyrics: ”A lot of it was because of the situation in Northern Ireland at the time. There were a lot of religious troubles between the Protestants against the Catholics. I was brought up strictly Catholic and I guess I was naive in thinking that religion shouldn’t be fought over. I always felt that God and Jesus wanted us to love each other. It was just a bad time in Northern Ireland, setting bombs off in England and such. We all believed in Jesus - and yet people were killing each other over it. To me it was just ridiculous. I thought that if God could see us killing each other in his name, he’d be disgusted.”

Fun Fact: Black sabbaths Debut took 2 days to record the entire album. Paranoid Took a little less than a week to record the full album where has this took a couple of months to record and was their only album to reach the top 5 in USA not until 2013`s 13 album which went to Nb. 1. Ozzy says he hated when this album took so long to record plus they were in a different studio i think in Los Angeles.

@@ANationalAcrobat I think Ozzy's complaint was based on the quality of those first few when they banged out almost like live recording. He has talked about the energy shows up on the finished product that way. He recorded his first two solo albums at the same time! Worked there!

It's about people who turned away from God because of people's influence. What Ozzy is saying is are you afraid to admit that you believe in God cause your friends mite laugh at you. And are you so small minded that you have to fall into a group of people that can't admit that God Almighty is the only way to find happiness and love.

After forever. Again. Sabbath was WAY more into the spiritual, the ancient, the sacred, more than say, modern physics and modern theoretical science. Obviously seeing the kinds of topics that the lyric writer geezer butler was into. So this song is saying how there is something out there, that ancient people all saw and believed in. Something that showed up from above. And they made this force upon the earth many names, most commonly known as God. So Sabbath believes in said God. And said writings, and creation, and destruction from the same force.
