WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    No... He's right. They do strawman him and do a terrible, terrible job of answering his question. They keep talking about random mutation and not answering the actual question. He's asking how environment plays a role in evolutionary mutation. They just keep saying random mutation over and over again. I totally understand why he's frustrated because he's asked them a very simple question and they won't answer it. I've watched hundreds of hours of this show and they are far and away the worst that I've heard so far.

  • @carolinusTG

    @carolinusTG

    Жыл бұрын

    @@tsunomat try to catch it this time, the environment is what drives the random mutation. The life that evolved around the equator in hotter, sunnier environments drove different random mutation in it's inhabitants than the colder, generally less sunny environments. Life evolved deep in caves generally have no pigment or eyes, many different types of creatures developing similar mutations in similar environments proves this. When you watch jeese lee peterson repeatedly misunderstand that apes don't evolve into humans, yet continue to keep asking if anyone has ever seen an ape evolve into a human, you have to get that repeatedly asking a question that has been answered, it's not up to the hosts asking for people to call them with proofs, to be giving everyone who calls a grade 5 science education before debating them, education is up to the caller, in both learning what they want to debate and what they want to advocate for.

    Agreed. He wasn't even able to respond with an attack to that one. Honestly that was one of the only points where he could have said something like "well, now you're just being a condescending dick" and it would not have been _entirely_ without merit. But he was pressed so starkly face to face with the completely miserable nature of his whiny victimization counter, such that he was completely incapable to reuse it yet again, he needed to reboot. Then at least, he responded with 2 points, the first was practically a tautology, and the 2nd, regarding the position of the majority of scientists regarding the mechanism for evolution, was both shifting the burden of proof, and trivially simple to counter, with no need to survey every scientist. I almost want to say it was so trivially refutable that they actively didn't want to use strong arguments against it when he first mentioned it, and didn't even address it this second time. Not just any, but every introductory biology textbook concretely declares random mutation as the vector for change. It is effectively impossible that this assertion be so completely ubiquitous in teaching material if if it was merely a marginal fringe theory. The guy clearly heard about the effort to collect signatures in the 1970s, it's still open, and to date, only has a few thousand signature from the pool of anyone with even the slightest of technical backgrounds, whether applicable to evolution or not. Meanwhile, another study, that only accepted responses From from life-science degrees, and they had to have evidence that their name was "john" and sorted to bind to that criteria. Even though the other pool was maintain, until inderh overtook it in a matter of days.

  • @NottherealLucifer

    @NottherealLucifer

    While I largely agree with your point, it isn't perfectly true. Yes, when we're talking about strength of personality and mental health, love and support is what makes people strong, but that isn't how strength in an evolutionary sense is defined. Abuse flat out doesn't make anything stronger, but plenty of other seemingly bad things do. In terms of evolution, passing on your genes as many times as possible is all that constitutes "strength." A serial rapist in a society that doesn't allow abortion, is strong in the evolutionary sense, which is why it's a useless metric. I'm an asexual, not only am I never planning to have children, I don't even engage in the act that creates them, according to evolution I am not only weak, I'm a failure. I think that a metric in which rapists are strong and people who literally will never rape anyone are weak, isn't a metric Billy or anyone else should bother bringing up.

I told him that I don't want to worship a megalomaniac like that.

    I recently said that Jesus gives conflicting messages. A christian responded what conflicting messages? I posted lines about turning the other cheek, give to the poor, take off your shirt, telling people not to throw stones at some lady and in some other lines, Jesus says to harm homosexuals, he talks about Lazarus and a nameless rich man that goes to hell and is being tortured, Jesus says he wants to crush people in a wine press and blood will flow all over the place and the part about witches. So, if those guys are your enemies, then why isn’t Jesus turning the other cheek? The christian kept asking what conflicting message. Finally, I said, don’t worry about it, don’t think about it, just keep worshipping. Their brains are gone, it is on permanent vacation. I have spoken to probably over 300 theists, mostly christian, so far. They are all the same. For a while, I was trying to learn about mormonism. Apparently, it is crashing pretty hard. Is that true? A bunch of former mormons were saying that 66% of their family have quit. The amount of scientific evidence against mormonism is enormous yet, there are 12 to 16 million mormons? Oh boy!

    @@louistournas120 While parts of their brains may be off on vacation, I like giving them little reminders to come home; that worked for me. It really came down to finally recognizing that I was applying a different way of thinking to religious or "spiritual" things and that just doesn't make sense. And it is so funny about how conflicting the bible can be. A person can cobble together an argument to support tons of conflicting positions by only selecting the verses they want to and ignoring the others. It's always funny to hear a person try to explain why it's okay to ignore the verses that don't agree with them. I do think that there is certainly an acceleration of people leaving the Mormon church, in part due to accessibility of information that has been around for a while e.g. the "CES Letter" that has been around since 2013 is being discovered only now by a lot of people. As for the membership count? It's highly inflated and maliciously targeted. Targeted because the growth of the church is high outside of the U.S., especially in other countries where information access and education may not be as good. Inflated because it is only by members on record, not by active members. I've been out for just over two years and I'm still on the records. They make it hard to remove yourself and I haven't cared to because my wife is still in so they'll bother me anyway. A person could be 50 years old, have been baptized at 8 and never gone back since and you're still being counted toward their membership count.

    @@jamespeterson7125 I think when it comes to religion, there is a conflict. Part of being human is wanting to survive. Leaving the religion often means that you are left without a god, without a heaven and you accept that you are just a biological machine that is one day going to break down. At the same time, people want to know the truth. They want to be sure that what they believe is true. For example, apologists. YEC apologists invest a lot of time claming that science backs up there claims, that there was a flood and on Ararat, Noah’s boat has been discovered by many teams, etc. Mormon apologists do the same. The claim that the book of Mormon is a special writing. That there is a match between Mayan civilization and the j people. A lot of christians have told me that they want to be saved, they don’t want to risk going to hell. Basically, they are using the Pascal’s wager. They have never heard of Pascal’s wager it is easily recognizable in the words they use. A couple of them told me that they don’t accept microevolution and don’t accept macroevolution. Most YEC seem to accept microevolution (small changes), that way, they can believe that there is a few hundred subspecies of beavers and that the Noah’s boat had 1 male and 1 female. Even if you tell them about the evidence, they are not willing to accept it since it means throwing away their religion and accepting that they are just biological machines. A small portion just seem to lack the skills. They are not good at logic, math. It doesn’t matter how you explain it, they will just not understand. Kent Hovind is that type. Flat earthers are that type. I started reading the CES letter but other things got in the way. That is an example of a guy who values the truth more than saving himself. I had heard from ex-mormons how hard it is to remove your name. There is an organization that helps with that. Apparently, the mormon priests bother the apostate a lot. Also, family members turn against you so a lot of them don’t tell their families that they are apostates. One lady said she had been an mormon apostate in her thirties. She didn’t tell her husband. I think the husband died at 80. She still didn’t tell her family until she was in her 9x. I read about Thomas Stuart Ferguson. How a Mormon lawyer transformed archaeology in Mexico-and ended up losing his faith It is true. Information can destroy a religion but I think it can never fully succeed bc there will always be people who are very emotional and a little less rational.

    if you enjoyed that, do a search for "atheist experience billy" and you'll get like 5-10 clips where he's called in to the line, talk heathen, AXP, .... at his finest, he'll give you the impression of a floundering 3 year old in the deep end, trying desperately not to drown, in spite of my foot on her head. At his worst, you'll wish the hosts just put him out of his misery by setting him on fire, and figured out a way that we (the audience) can enjoy the show!
