Bible Prophecies Are Fulfilled | Talk Heathen 06.37

Rick from Canada is next, who argues Biblical prophecies are being fulfilled. He uses the example of Jesus quoting Psalm 22 when he was on the cross and the last supper. Did the gospel writers have access to Jewish tradition when these things were written? It is not until we go towards the future that it is a prophecy. Look for scholars that cover the same material of interest that have different perspectives. Is there a prophecy that is not self-referenced in the Bible? Has god’s word reached all corners of the earth and will the end times be a rapid roll out as a result?

@@Jik239 That's not a good prophecy because there is no given time limit and it's incredibly vague. It's not insane to think that if someone creates a religion and sees they're getting a nice following, that eventually people all over the world will hear about it. Like, that's just how information spreads???? EDIT: Plus, even IF the gospel had reached all these tribal civilizations in remote places that are still unaware of the major religions of the world (meaning, the prophecy has the been fulfilled)...literally every time someone is born or someone develops dementia, the gospel would no longer have reached everyone on earth. Babies literally can't comprehend anything other than being hungry and needing to poop, and people with dementia don't have access to that information in their brains anymore. Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." "Well then, the Lord himself will give you a sign: a young woman who is pregnant will have a son and will name him ‘Immanuel.’" The interesting part is that the first gospels written do not refer to this prophecy. Rather, it appears that Matthew and Luke add in the birth of Jesus purposefully to legitimize Jesus as the Messiah. Matthew and Luke were both aware of the Isaiah prophecy. Paul, Mark and John were also aware of the Isaiah prophecy, but didn't think it was an important reference...no need for it in their apologetics.

  • @DJ-73

In Isaiah 7:14 the word for young woman was either mistranslated by mistake or purposely mistranslated to deceive to mean a virgin will conceive to create the Jesus character. The messiah that is to come and unite and bring peace to the nations doesn't fit with the the Jesus character. The messiah would be born with his father being his actual father (unlike Joseph), would be a sinner (unlike Jesus), have a wife and children (unlike Jesus), and so forth.

@@laurenferris2223 you know how in the Bible it says that God will give a sign, that a virgin (young woman) will conceive and bare a child and she will call him Immanuel? The word virgin was mistranslated and in Hebrew it means young woman. As far as how are we to know, good question considering there has been many young women that have had a boy and called him Immanuel. You should visit Tovia Singer on KZread. He's a Rabbi that shows how Christianity is wrong.

Even if you concede that the Gospel has reached everywhere, can you blame people for not accepting an outside religion after they have been brought up under a different religion? Don’t these believers understand that these people DO NOT have free choice in this, whether by coercion, social and family pressure, or simply because they have internalized their religion from infancy????

I saw a show this week and it tracked the likely historical origins of biblical stories. It mentioned a Roman officer named Antonis Panthera who assaulted a girl and she became pregnant and her family disowned her. She was cornered one day and was about to be stoned to death when an architect Joseph stepped in and claimed her as property saving her life. They later married and had to flee Jerusalem because Panthera was rumoured to be plotting to kill them. The twin sons born from the assault Matthias and Jesus returned to Jerusalem after Panthera died.

According the mabinogion ( Welsh poetry), defeated the Saxons in 12 major battles. However, the grail, camalot, Lancelot, percival, sword in the stone are legends attached to Arthur who may have been a legitimate character in Britain after the romans left.

Heard this guy call in to multiple Atheist call in shows and I'm seeing a pattern. He's very energetic and likes to gish gallop for one. For two he needs to hear that the plural of anecdote is not data. Also a whole bunch of weak correlations (it's generous to even call them that) do not amount to a strong foundation for an argument. Every call from him is him burying the hosts in a list of a,b,c,d,e,f... until they cut him off or he runs out of steam to talk. It's incredibly clear he (like so many theists) is starting with a conclusion and trying desperately to stretch as many possible things to fit that conclusion as possible. Rather than being intellectually honest and asking if there is reason enough to be convinced.

I've heard this argument about hundreds of prophecies come true quite a lot by Christians but I am fairly confident in saying that the vast majority has not bothered into looking into that claim. They repeat what they heard from, what they consider to be, trusted source like their pastor (or maybe some YT apologist). The reason, I'm saying this is that there generally are only a handful that are specified when they are asked (if they know them at all), and often, like in this very case with the supposed prophecy in Isaiah, they don't know the details or context. And I'm not sure if they would so proudly repeat this nonsense if they actually did look into them. I once pressed someone on some internet forum and was given a link to a website that listed I don't know how many of these supposed prophecies. Could have been two or three hundred. I really don't remember exactly. But I do vividly remember looking up a sample of 20 or more of them and I can tell you that most of them were complete crap. Hardly any of them were what you would even recognize as a prophecy. Most examples drew connections between two passages that really have no connection at all if you read them in context. And then you have Matthew, the evangelist who wrote for a Jewish audience and therefore spiced up his gospel at every possible opportunity with details that aren't found anywhere else and which supposedly fulfilled some prophecy from the Old Testament. A cynic might say he pulled these details out of his rear end. (He's quite the fabulist at any rate; just take the Jerusalem zombies, a supposed event when the tombs in one of the biggest cities in the Roman Empire opened up and the dead roamed the street. But somehow nobody other than Matthew gave a flying fuck to record this? So much for his credibility). In short, the vast majority of these prophecies are embarrassingly bad.

You cannot claim that a prophecy came true because one passage in a possibly fictitious book predicted an event in the same book, even if they were written at different times by different people. The later author could obviously have read the previous prediction and made up a story that "fulfills" that prophecy. It would need to be a passage in a book that predicted a significant later real-life event that has been proven to have happened after the book had been written.

I just don't understand this prophesy nonsense. Apart from the vast majority not even being prophecies, and none of them having been fulfilled... even if you could demonstrate dozens of actual prophecies having been fulfilled without people actively trying to do so.... al this would show is that the author was able to describe what was going to happen. It in no way indicates how they did that, let alone supports the idea a god was involved. In order to show a god was involved you first need to demonstrate that god exists and is even a candidate explanation. Prophecies come REQUIRE evidence of a god to be linked to a god, they can't serve as evidence for the thing they require...

And Tyre has Iron Age buildings still standing. “The Lord says: I am against you, Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves. They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock. Out in the sea she will become a place to spread fishnets, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.” Ezekiel 23:3, Nebuchadnezzar failed to siege Tyre. Biblical scholars note that the writer/s, can’t recall which source codes, where contemporary to these events, so they got stuff wrong that seemed inevitable, where as events they account for earlier they get right - this is how we can date these authors. Also makes god looks a little silly, as they proclaim prophecy in his name.
