The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    In all respect, everyone is religious. Even atheists have beliefs about the origin, destiny, morality and purpose of the human race. Atheism even has its own millionaire preachers. Is atheism a danger to the youth? It depends on whether you want your children around amoral people, as atheists have no morals. Do not get me wrong. I am not saying that atheists are not nice people, it is just that they do not have a moral law. The best an atheist can come up with is a 'social contract.' Yet, how can an atheist ever use the word 'should'? Why 'should' someone be nice to other people? Is a child molestor 'evil'? In order for someone to break a law, the law must exist. Yet, without God, society or the individual decides their own moral law. If each person or society creates their own morality, then morality loses any definition. That means that drug cartels, with their social contracts, and violent gangs, with their particular moral values, are just as acceptable as whatever rules you live by. Since amorality is the biggest danger the world faces, atheists are, indeed, a danger to youth. You cannot say that I did not warn you. God will judge the world in righteousnesss. How will you do? If you have lied and stolen, you will be tried as a lying thief. Heaven is real, but so is hell. Since God is love, eternity without God is hell. Yet, Christ died on a Cross so that, just by asking, you may know Him. Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

    @@RTR_87 We're here for a reason, it's a learning experience. In the next life we'll understand the things we don't understand now. There has to be a balance in everything, choices to be made, lessons to be learned. We were given the gift of life, none of us earned or deserve it. We were given a few rules to live by, advice for any eventuality and the free will to disobey/ignore all of it. If we follow the rules we gain eternal bliss. I'm not complaining, I think it's more than I deserve. By the way, I can guarantee you and everyone else, there is an afterlife. It was proven to me and nobody, not science or anything other, can explain away the experience I shared with my wife and her mother. It involved supernatural circumstances. I asked if it was okay to share the experience with others. I was told it was okay but I shouldn't try to force anyone to believe.

    @@MrMarco855 Meh, I’m not convinced it’s necessary for people to suffer to “learn lessons”. If god is all powerful, we could easily be born with these “lessons” hard wired in to us. I completely disagree that we don’t “deserve” to be here and I think that’s some EXTREMELY toxic nonsense the church has drilled into Christians. I didn’t ask to be here so I don’t have to “praise” some deity for giving me something I never asked for. The idea that I’m somehow evil because someone ate an apple they weren’t supposed to eat is probably the most absurd thing I’ve ever believed. Lastly, I’m happy for you that you had a spiritual experience but there are over 5000 different religions who claim to have the exact same experience with their chosen deity. How do we know who’s right?

    @Charles Carpenter Atheism is a position on only one issue, whether or not God or gods exist. This is relevant because it points out a huge fallacy in your reasoning. Atheist or A-Theist means "a person who lacks a belief in God." It doesn't have doctrines or rules, it's just a lack of belief. If you don't believe in a god but you're still spiritual, you're still technically an Atheist. There are plenty of people in the world and throughout history who lack a belief in any gods and have done something bad. Your problem is that you are looking at Atheism as the CAUSE of that wrong-doing, and this is absolutely cringe-worthy because it's not like your argument hasn't been made before, and even most Christians know it's a bad-faith argument and stay well away from it in proper debate. I assume you're speaking of Stalin, who btw was a Seminarian (a subsect of the Roman Catholic Church). Stalin was an opportunist who enacted anti-Christian policies as a political power move against the notion of the Tsar. If you would like more on that, check out some of what Hitchens has to say about Stalin. But the argument that he did what he did was "in the name of Atheism" is preposterous and intellectually dishonest. Not only was Stalin himself religious, but even if he wasn't and was indeed an Atheist, it wouldn't matter. And the reason is because Atheism is not a doctrine or rule-set telling someone how to act. It is ONLY a position on whether or not God or gods exist. You can do something bad in the name of Christianity and other religions because you can actually point to rules and doctrines in those belief systems that tell them to do said "bad thing." Such a thing does not exist in Atheism. Need proof? See just a short list below of different kinds of Atheists with moral or political positions that are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from one another, and will result in a difference in opinion on how to act morally just in those groups: Nihilism Antinatalism Humanism Taoism Buddhism I hope you'll at least take this as an opportunity to educate yourself and understand the difference between a doctrine-filled system of beliefs, and a "descriptive word" about a lack of belief.

  • @IxTHROWxTHINGS

    @IxTHROWxTHINGS

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Charles Carpenter Again, Atheism does not tell you to serve yourself. Atheism does not tell you to do ANYthing, and it CAN'T. It isn't a guided system of beliefs or doctrine. "Atheist" is a position on only ONE specific issue, whether or not a God or gods exist. Secular Humanism is an Atheistic worldview that is about doing what is best for man-kind and acting morally towards your fellow humans, for instance. This already upsets your theory that Atheism says serve yourself... By definition, Atheism is incapable of telling you to serve yourself since, and apparently I must re-iterate, it is a position on ONE specific issue: Whether or not God or gods exist. Note: This is NOT the same for Christianity or other religions. A religion, also by definition, IS a set of core beliefs guided by doctrines/rules/principles.

    Charles Carpenter 1. can you proof that more people died due to communism than to religion? Sounds like an outrageous claim to me 2. what the fuck does communism have to do with religion? Communism and Marxism in it self include no statement about Theism at all. Those are theories on economies and sociality. Your statement is so stupid and stinks of american christian propaganda... "Communism is the most evil thing in the world and thus a scapegoat for everything." Also isn't it funny, that uninformed americans tend to call everything they disagree with or what is diffrent to how their country is working communist.

  • @airbolt6496

    @airbolt6496

    @Charles Carpenter Listen here, moron. Atheism isn't a belief system, the reason Churches were taken out during communistic rule was for a power move. Christianity however and other theistic claims directly told their people to fight for holy land and for their religions. It is irrelevant how many people died due to communism because their deaths weren't inspired by Atheism, because Atheism is simply a rejection of a claim due to not meeting its burden of proof. You're using a fallacious argument by saying that the cause of the deaths during communistic times was Atheism, when in reality it wasn't, it was Stalin and his circle.

    I don't hide it, but I also don't push it in people's faces. I am honest though, if someone feels comfortable asking me why I don't go to church, then they should be comfortable hearing any answer I might give. I usually just say it isn't my thing and they don't persist. If they push though, I will tell them it is because I don't believe, and will continue explaining it as long as they want to talk about it. But I'm certainly not handing out pamphlets or knocking on doors spreading the good word of nothing.

    +Andrew Irvine Yeah it is scary that in a modern world people have to hide their intelligence. I am pretty lucky and live in Australia. I have never hidden my atheism and do not suffer because of it. But I realise there are some countries that are so extreme with their views that it is dangerous to express your disbelief. I am assuming you are in a Muslim based country? If not then I would love to know what other countries are making it uncomfortable for atheists.
